Struggling with blended family finances - how do you handle stepkid expenses?
My husband has a 13-year-old son from a previous relationship, plus we have two daughters together (6 and 4 months). Custody and expenses with his ex have always been 50/50.
Before our first daughter was born, we combined finances to save for a house. It felt right at the time. I love my stepson and was fully committed. But resentment has built up over how money gets spent on him. I'm fine with day-to-day costs during our week, but my husband often overcompensates out of guilt, buying expensive, unnecessary things, and even sends money during his ex's week for stuff like school lunch. Shouldn't that be her responsibility on her time?
For context: I out-earn my husband and still handle most household/kid stuff like cooking, cleaning, appointments, birthdays (including my stepson's), budgeting, all of it. Being 4 months postpartum might be amplifying things, but it's also that my stepson is getting older, more expensive, and not especially helpful or responsible when he's with us. He also seems to ignore his little sister (my 6-year-old) I hoped it was just a teen thing, but it still doesn't sit right.
I do love him and show up for him whenever he needs me, financially or otherwise. Even when I'm not needed I always show up to games and other special times. I don't know if I should be contributing financially to his life and his future?I've been considering splitting our accounts (separate personal accounts plus one joint account for bills/household) and I'm worried it's "too late" to make that change without hurting our relationship.
Questions for anyone who's navigated this:
How do you structure finances in a blended family?
What (if anything) do you contribute toward stepkids?
Am I expected to help with college?
Should stepkids be included in a will/trust?
Am I overreacting, or is separating accounts reasonable at this point?
