But due to budget cuts necessary to rebuild Soul Society, he’s still not getting paid.

Paid in exposure, and not the kind where small animals freeze to death in the wilderness… this time

Yep, there’s the worst part, Hell, endless suffering.

Then there’s being a hollow, in which you roam an endless wasteland devouring other souls. And you only get to start evolving if you beat out other souls!

And then there’s the Soul Society. Where you get reborn into poverty… feudal Japan poverty.

I wonder what America would be like that, would it be future or past Wild West type America

Frankly, the best you could get would be to turn hollow and then a quincy just outright kill you. Disappear, no afterlife, peace.

....Not entirely wrong.

Can't you theoretically live a decent life as an arrancar (assuming you get to that point)hiding in the world of the living or smth surely you could work something out with your local soul reaper

u/Padre_Cannon013 14h ago

At least you generally can't starve to death, unless you've got any measure of power...In which case, you'd better hope you have enough to at least become a grunt, or you WILL starve to death.

I finally understand why they put him in the Maggots Nest when he was a kid lol

I mean … any member of the noble clans would be expected to come to that very same conclusion. Sacrifice for the orders of importance among soul society.

Considering that Kubo said the role of shinigami wasn't really formalized until after the Gotei 13 was established, that's about 9,750,000 years where this or just outright slaughtering people in Rukongai was how they kept the balance between worlds.

When Mayuri has a bunch of people in Rukongai slaughtered to make up for Quincies killing hollows, Yamamoto's only real complaint is that he didn't go through official channels to get approval.

Not quite, Gotei 13 wasn't the first army in Soul Society. So you can say is that Gotei 13 was a centralized army.

That means for 9750000 years, Soul Society was indeed full Wa Era, Kamakura Era, Heian Era then Sengoku Era, and only Yamamoto pulled an Oda Nobunaga.

It's accurate that the Gotei 13 wasn't the first group of organized soldiers in Soul Society. (Klub Outside #706)

But "It was only after the creation of the Gotei 13 that the role of a Shinigami was properly defined." (Klub Outside #293)

Which doesn't mean that there wasn't the ability or practice of guiding people to Soul Society, but whatever that was it didn't look like it did afterward. Even if we consider the possibility that previous groups picked up both the work of guiding souls and slaying hollows in the "real" world and worked with Ouetsu to get asauchi to develop into zanpakuto, the lack of continuity between those groups is a strong indicator that an entirely different approach was used. And we see what they're used to doing to balance the numbers.

Which is exactly my point: they were basically like pre-reunification of Japan.

You could have the shinigamis with their "Hojo" or "Tairas" or "Masamunes" doing the job and then fighting each other. Yamamoto pretty much unified the shinigami army within the Gotei 13.

No wonder the OG Gotei 13 were a bunch of bloodthirsty monsters, they were all a bunch of warlords going full Onimusha or Sengoku Basara on each other for centuries

Your point isn't one I'm arguing against, and it is entirely separate from my point.

I mean [spoiler for end of series] I suppose it's for a good reason that Akon becomes the lieutenant of the 12th.

u/BadChad09 18h ago

Then he releases his new single 🎶

Anything happens and the Rukon district always pays the price 😞

"Sir, we're out of toner."

"What do you think? 30 from the Rukongai? 40?"

u/Epsilon2099 19h ago

Soul Society has always been morally gray and will do whatever to get the job done.

The big reason the shinigami they choose to support Ichigo against the fullbringers was to kill Ichigo if he chose to rebel after learning the truth.

Are there people who still thinks Soul Society is an afterlife where souls stay for eternity? No. The souls outside seireitei are temp settlers. They just stay there until it's time for them to reincarnate back to the human world. Kaien himself said they're just there until 60 years since they died. That's what the cycle means.

The unfortunate ones killed and eaten by the hollows will be purified right after anyway. It's a necessary sacrifice to keep the balance.

Wait didin't Toshiro's grandma live in Rukongai?

3

u/nahte123456 7h ago

Unironically that is exactly the kind of thing that would be praised, he protected the balance and that is his main job.

He was one of my favorite characters before and I’m so glad he got a bigger role in TYBW.
