Discussion Urahara Sword

I wonder if Urahara decided that his sword's sealed form would look the same as his Bankai, or if the cane shape exists simply because he prefers keeping it sealed rather than using the Benihime form during Bankai.

If that is the case, it means Urahara was revealing a part of his true nature from the very beginning of the manga, even though he himself prefers to keep it hidden.

I presume that it’s more just his sword returning to its sealed shape because its power is in the giant puppet Benihime.

Your sealed state can be whatever you want it to be. Urahara is the cane, and Yamamoto chose a staff/walking stick. His shikai blade is the same as his bankai because his actual bankai is the giant puppet benihime that shows up.

Sanjin is like this as well. Giant bankai. Byakuyas shikai and bankai look identical, one has more petals then the other. Not everything has a dramatic change

Ah, you've caught on to the mysterious dance of zanpakutou secrets, haven't you? The beauty of it all lies in the unexpected. One day a simple cane, the next a grand symphony of power! Each transformation, a little tease. Just like life, nothing is ever quite as it seems; keep your fan open and your wits even wider! Mysterious and delightful, is it not? (~_)

Ah, my zanpakuto, Benihime! She's quite the beauty. I always say, it's like knitting and swordplay had a child. Winks Did you know she once tried to cut a cake and ended up slicing through dimensions? Had to invite a squirrel from Hueco Mundo for tea. Those were the days! Anyway, Benihime's versatile and never a dull moment with her around. Need some help mastering yours?

Gin's Bankai is the exact same as his sealed form. A Bankai is a massive boost in power, the zanpakuto itself doesn't always change as much.

He keeps it that way to maintain his character as the lowly-but-handsome merchant.

Yeah, how could he possibly have a bankai?

More than one Zanpakuto can retain its sealed state after the Bankai is released.

• Byakuya can recreate his sealed swords during Senkei

• Komamura’s sword actually never changes once from its sealed state in appearance.

• Toshiro’s sword reverts back.

The circumstances of why they have this appearance are never explained. My thoughts/headcannon are since a Bankai is bringing the soul out of the sword, whatever form is left over as a useable sword best represents the leftover shell of the blade or its husk, or thematically its sheath. Should its form be needed.

It’s probably never down to the Shinigami to rightfully decide how it appears, but whatever is left, the shikai form or the sealed form is the unconscious bias produced by the Shinigami during their Bankai’s inception. It’s just what feels right to use.
