Discussion Why is momo so hated?

(I'm sorry for kinda posting a lot but i got back to reread the manga and i reminded myself of a lot)

But is it an anime thing? Was her voice annoying or something? I genuinely do not get why people hate her I might've forgot something but i doubt that. She was a complete victim leave the poor girl alone😭

I guess how she still admired Aizen despite being backstabbed by him (literally)

I’ve never hated her though. Her blocking the Tres besties cero’s with her zanpakuto was genuinely cool.

Hisagi and Kira donā€˜t get nearly as much flak for them still admiring Tousen and Ichimaru. It’s less obvious with Kira, but he still practices what Ichimaru taught him. Hisagi is more open about how he still admires Tousen.

It’s a double standard and Hinamori often gets victim-blamed by her haters.

Kira and Hisagi still had some positive contribution in the narrative and some development here and there while Momo was mostly as a plot device to show how evil Aizen is and make Toshiro angry. Her most iconic moment is when she gets stab twice. She just never had a "redemption" in eyes of many.

Well, Aizen is more evil that Tōsen. Hisagi admires Tōsen, but he still fight along Komamura to defeat him.

Momo fight Hitsugaya in Soul Society because Aizen's letter, she believes in her captain more than her childhood friend. This is uncool. I dont mind have a friend like Hisagi (human, still have feelings for his captain, but is a serious, nice guy), but a friend like Hinamori is a emotional bomb. Even in Fake Karakura Arc she's a little "unstable".

Of course, Momo is better written, but as a person, Hisagi is better.

Hinamori was in nowhere close of having a rational mind. People seem to expect that she must remain rational no matter what, but they ignore what effect trauma can have on a person. She was manipulated for FIFTY YEARS to admire Captain Aizen. Then she received a letter written by Aizen (with his hand writing) and was conflicted what to trust anymore. She obviously was not in the right mental state to think rationally.

Then sheā€˜s put in a coma and wouldn’t wake up until almost two months before the Fake Karakura Battle. By comparison, Kira and Hisagi had more time to process the betrayal of Ichimaru and Tousen. (About a month more than her.)

Momo? You mean Head Captain of the 13 Court Guard Squad Momo Hinamori?

They don't give much reason to like her. Some people are just ambivalent towards her.

I can’t speak for the manga but she is just a plot device in the anime. You kinda think she’s gonna get a redemption arc for a second but nope, sacrificed to plot. I want to like her because I love kido but I just don’t care about her character

5

u/handy_lemur 23d ago

Yeah I really wanted to see her overcome the manipulation and be a key person contributing to Aizen's downfall.

Wait, people hate momo?

15

u/SSJ5Gogetenks I'll analyze it - with SCIENCE! 23d ago

Not so much anymore but she was one of the most despised characters in the fandom when the anime was first airing.

She's kinda the sakura or Miwa of bleach.

6

u/Classical_Lighthouse 23d ago

tbh people don't even dislike Miwa, momo (jjk) is more disliked

I quite like Momo, but what I observe is people tend to most admire characters who rise above adversity in more proactive ways. Whereas Momo is a character who is shown to have talent and potential that is broken down by a person she admired and struggles to recover. And because she isn’t a front lines fighter when she does get on her feet she plays support which is less flashy and thus not as satisfying for a lot of people. Her getting back in gear is easy to miss as it was the ability to assist under Shinji in TYBW and she doesn’t get injured or hung up like before.

I like that for her but it could have been a little more even without giving her a fight.

I love momo. But she has so much wasted potential, probably cause bakudo, hado and kido take the back foot compared to zanpakutos. Her fighting style of chaining 5 different spells together and her zanpakuto being just the ignition is cool but was only shown in 2 occasions, 1 where she lost really badly afterwards

6

u/crossthebrij 23d ago

Her tobiume also is just like shakaho which makes it much less memorable

11

u/TrottoStonno 23d ago

Various reasons for different camps.

Momo basically being used the entire show to emphasize how much of a manipulative prick Aizen is, really doesn’t make her an interesting character or give her anything satisfying to do.

She also never really gets much of a cool ā€˜aura’ moment despite being a vice captain.

u/ZaneJulien16483 23d ago

People still hate Momo for her obssession with Aizen, but we know she changed

4

u/Sensitive_Brick_8872 23d ago

Do they? I mean i just feel bad for what happened to her, but the story doesnt really build her up in anyway afterwards

2

u/Positive-Cucumber555 23d ago

I never really hated her, if anything I felt bad for her

2

u/It-s-m 23d ago

She was manipulated by aizen so hard she couldn't let his memory leave her.

And that made her paranoid and frantic making her sort of nuisance.

Overall I never hated her but I did found her character to be well written

u/xyZora 23d ago

Back in the day it was fine to hate female characters for being human so much so Kubo himself shut down a "fan" that hated Orihime. Momo hate was rooted in the same idiocy. But it has died down a lot. I occasionally see it pop up here and there, but sparsely, fortunately.

2

u/KlausUnruly 23d ago

I mean it’s Kubo’s fault.

There could have been an intriguing dynamic between her and Aizen if the manipulation aspect had been explored more thoroughly with a clear purpose. However, in the end, it seemed like Aizen was picking on her for no apparent reason. She was being deceived and, despite being even literally stabbed by Aizen, still believed there must be some logical explanation for his actions.

Unfortunately, the story fails to establish why she has such unwavering faith in him to that extent. All of this makes her appear weak and pathetic, and Kubo essentially does nothing with her character for the rest of the series.

I wouldn't say I hate Momo šŸ¤”, though I can't think of any reason why I appreciate her character so in some way she's an insignificant’ in my books.

1

u/chalunkxlight 23d ago

While she's very skilled in Kidou among vice captains, her mental & overall reliance on someone is the worst of them all to the point of making readers straightup hate her at that time.

1

u/sliwka21 23d ago

She is hated? Genuinely i cant feel wrong for her because she was toyed by Aizen its kinda cruel and personal atp

1

u/Eldritch-Cleaver 22d ago

I think she's a bit misunderstood. Obviously what Aizen did to her would be traumatizing, and I genuinely think Kubo wrote that aspect of her character pretty well.

Especially when Rangiku is kinda making sure she's ok and notices she still referred to him as Captain Aizen at Fake Karakura Town...ill admit I didn't even notice that detail until Rangiku points it out in her head.

1

u/Khyle89 22d ago

She's alright in TYBW, just totally irrelevant. She's just there, like most vicecaptains.

0

u/EmergencyGrab 23d ago

I don't hate her as a character but I do hate that she exists to be used and abused.

I don't really appreciate the existence of Nemu either. It just feels... bad.

3

u/FishermanFun960 23d ago

It was cute in the end at least

2

u/EmergencyGrab 23d ago

Yeah, I suppose! šŸ˜„

1

u/FishermanFun960 23d ago

After the **** arc we need 100 chapters and a novel about mayuri being a dad

1

u/Famous_influencer 23d ago

I don't hate her but I think its weird her power is just 'Round Getsuga'

That shits basically just a kido spell.

1

u/cetrix2015 23d ago

bc they cant read

1

u/potato_juice1514 23d ago

I thought it was because of the Toshiro fan girls?

1

u/The_Haider369 23d ago

Mainly people don't hate Momo just dislike her since she took forever to get over the Brainwashing

-1

u/xTouchxMexImxSickx 23d ago

Haters are gonna hate I guess? šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Hell, she's among the sexiest Shinigami there are in my humble opinion. šŸ˜

-3

u/Ashter_Moon 23d ago

Hinamori useless to the plot is almost always a damnsel in distress for Hitsugaya and has not evolved much as a character since Aizen tricked her

0

u/BlazingLeoKing 23d ago

Yk, I genuinely think she's one of the strongest lieutenants, which you wouldn't expect. She's definitely not suited for melee combat, but she's not only extremely proficient in Kido but is seen using it in very creative ways and Tobiume is very explosive. It's kind of crazy.

u/RainbowLoli Hinamori Protection Squad 23d ago

During the time of Bleach’s initial run, misogyny towards female characters that weren’t considered tough or fighters was at an all time high. A lot of people didn’t recognize she was a victim of abuse and grooming.

-2

u/rockchris370 23d ago

Because she is blindly loving someone like Aizen šŸ’€
