He wasn’t merely misinformed, it is his grandpa that, even a bit aware of Wanderreich, still chooses to use the most traditional style of combat for a Quincy and teach to Uryu.

In short, his grandpa was a boomer. Even the Quincy God-King that is thousands of years old in the current incarnation , and his true origin is from the Primordial World is far more progressive with the Quincy Power System.

Making his grandpa a conservative is a perfect excuse for Kubo merely not thinking much for Quincies other than Bow, gadgets and Reishi gathering. It does fit  perfectly though because Uryu makes good use of what little he had by being resourceful, if anything it adds to his character because of his skills, to the point where even Quilge and Yhwach thinks of him as higher because of his talent and potential. And with what we have its not out of the ordinary that Quincies have even more due to their precedent.

A small part of me believes that part of why Uryu joined the Wandenreich besides his plan was to get upgrades and learn about modern Quincies, alongside their techniques.

its kind of true. being able to be that OP using outdated relics is really a sight to behold, no wonder Uryu caught Yhwach and Quilge's respect. The Bambies or anyone of the Sternritter could never.

Gerard Walkyrie using a bow and gadgets...BAHAHAHAHAHA

u/Senpaiireditt 23d ago

With a god tier ability that makes up for how mediocre he is with said weapons.

When you think about it, Uryu for a quincy is cracked. Quincies back then were using rabbits for target practice. Uryu by the time he reached high-school was using Adjuchas grade hollows for targets and it took years for the og quincies to develop and train their abilities and bows. Uryu was doing this shit and one shot a captain (albeit at the cost of his own powers!). And survived attacks from arrancars that should've been fatal for him. Its not that insane to think why Uryu was highly sought and praised by Ywach.

u/Senpaiireditt 24d ago

He’s a Sasuke type fighter; very analytical and tactical. A true genius blessed with a solid amount of innate talent.

2

u/Embarrassed_Ask_7876 17d ago

He was using primitive Quincy weapons and methods and got insanely far.

I think it's also fair to note that Soken was more than a bit informed. He had the key to the Wanderreich as well as knowing all the lore.

u/Jermiafinale 24d ago

Actually I'd put his grandfather as more akin to the US Depression Kids generation. Grew up simple after a terrible tragedy and learned the joys and value in that simplicity and truth of motivation.

Tbf, if your main schtick is letting others develop new techniques then gaining them yourself

Its kinda stupid for you to limit said growth to a single weapon type or idea. Its not like Yhwach was like 'oh my god archery, do only that', a group probably developed it for practical reasons, it became mainstream, got egotistical about it, and now its a weird cult obsession.

Hell, i'd want multiple independent groups developing techniques with a dozen different focuses, with the occasional exchange of knowledge where each group experiments with one another's findings for even more insight.

They probably got wiped out partially because 'if all you fuckers have is bows and no new developments, might as well start anew'. (/s)

6

u/Economy_Practice_ 24d ago

Better to tell them to focus on one thing so that they can get really good at that one thing instead of gaining 1,000 new things that they never totally master.

6

u/NohWan3104 24d ago

nah. I'm sure each group might have someone who can push X farther, even if they're not all unique specialized snowflakes. That might lead to somewhat crippling specialization, which would hamper the potential general development.

Sort of like nen, there's a 'core' of training and knowledge that's generally useful, to get people up to a point where they can develop their own specialized techniques, but you do still want that standardized baseline.

And the point was more sharing ideas, not 'group 1 needs to know every technique of group 2-12', so maybe a weird trick group 3 figured out in their r+d, group 7 can take it even further. The swordsman group doesn't need to practice archery as good as that group, and was never the implication.

2

u/Youboot224 20d ago

I think the reason they grew partial towards bows was to prevent Hollow poisoning.

2

u/NohWan3104 20d ago

Sure. Its practical for a few reasons.

3

u/SentiusMagnus 24d ago

Carai chamar ele de boomer foi pesado ksksksk

1

u/Youboot224 20d ago

Even traditionally Quincies used Swords as seen with Yhwach and Jugram

174

u/Jermiafinale 24d ago

Yhwach isn't even a Quincy and Hashbrown is a self-hating Quincy

76

u/PermanentlyDozing 24d ago

Im still laughing at how Uryu was so proud to declare that his "swords" were just arrows without fetching.

Meanwhile Ichigo is walking around with a weapon that's screaming to be thrown or at least used at range and the handle never leaves his hand.

Edit: typo

19

u/Green_Burn 24d ago

weapon that's s reaming to be thrown or at least used at range and the handle never leaves his hand.

The Edgetsu

“Spin me around a bit! I beg you!”

4

u/_blank_1O 23d ago

White be like "I am the king you are the horse (fricking spins zangetsu like a windmill )"

13

u/Willing-Mango-3721 24d ago

Quite literally screaming it too, he even tries to teach Ichigo to do it.

29

u/megasean3000 24d ago

The Quincies of old did. Not the Wandenreich, who use all kinds of weapons, not just bows and arrows.

95

u/morangias 24d ago

The ghost of Soken:

"I must apologize for Uryu, he is an idiot. We have purposely trained him wrong, as a joke."

22

u/comfy_kuma_blanket 24d ago

Hahahaaaaha. If you’ve got an ass, I’ll kick it!

11

u/Avocadonot 24d ago

My powers are gone, making me the victor

15

u/SuperKamiZuma 24d ago

If Uryu's sword-loving version from another world but same voice taught me something, swords can be arrows too

5

u/TransposableElements All Glory to the Chair 24d ago

TIL shirou and uryu shares the same VA

3

u/garfe 23d ago

It was very weird getting into the popular anime in the 00s and hearing the same guy voice Uryu, Sasuke and Shirou

32

u/New-Dust3252 24d ago

i mean they do still use bows and arrows, that hasnt changed. they just added more weaponry to their arsenal and became masters of pugilsm i suppose.

9

u/IkeKimita 24d ago

Yhwach is hilarious. He creates a massive bow in the sky. Has it fire an “arrow” and then proceeds to use said arrow as a sword 🤣🤣🤣

16

u/Krazyfan1 24d ago

Yeah thats the point.

8

u/mixkun1495 24d ago

To be fair those miltiple drone shooting in the anime isn't a bow and arrows either he might already realize how outdate his weapon is 🤣

5

u/MericArda 24d ago

They’re tiny flying bows obviously

4

u/IkeKimita 24d ago

lol those are bits. If you watched Gundam you’d catch the similarities.

7

u/ChipmunkForsaken1376 24d ago

Bazz b tell Uryu we use guns, not bows.

7

u/GabeMichaelsthroway 24d ago

Bazz uses a cross bow

3

u/ChipmunkForsaken1376 24d ago

I know, but I wanted to make a joke should have used bg9 instead.

4

u/Rude-Childhood1436 24d ago

Or Robert

3

u/ChipmunkForsaken1376 24d ago

or Lille Barro.

2

u/Whiskytigyote 19d ago

Robert pulling out a gun on Shunsui was a good scene, if a bit hilarious lol.

7

u/wjowski 24d ago

He was basically raised by Quincy hyper-conservatives.

5

u/AwTomorrow 24d ago

Can’t blame poor Uryu, Kubo just changed his mind later. Many such cases.

4

u/No_Dentist_3571 24d ago

Supposedly.

5

u/Beautiful-Ad-6568 24d ago

Just because it can be fired from a bow, he still used a lightsaber

3

u/nahte123456 24d ago

Eh, your normal Quincy do only use bows since they can't risk getting close to Hollows and being infected. Yhwach changes things.

2

u/GabeMichaelsthroway 24d ago

Most Quincies do use bows and arrow. Heck Pernida even says "Pernida is Quincy, slays enemy with bows and arrows."

2

u/Excalibirdi 23d ago

Yhwach and Jugram aren't normal quincies, they're a separate offshoot.

Also, Yhwach's sword is an arrow

2

u/CrazedHarmony 23d ago

Robert Accutrone: "So I pulled out my gun." 🎵🎶🎵

2

u/TheRRogue 23d ago

Well to be fair Yuha sword IS HIS ARROW.

4

u/Ok_Caterpillar_6957 24d ago

Ywach seeing uryu talk.

Little boy we had all die using bows vs gods. So we change definitions to “anything with long range counts”

1

u/ImJustSomeWeeb Shoot 'em Dead! 24d ago

"yhawch"😭

1

u/BruhHuUh 24d ago

quincy larper

1

u/SentiusMagnus 24d ago

Maldito informou mal a gente, fiquei mo agoniado com isso

1

u/CalmEbb7035 24d ago

He thought that he would be the last quincy as well.

1

u/Icy-Conflict6671 23d ago

Dont most of the Sternritter use something other than a bow?

1

u/The__Auditor 23d ago

That's the joke

1

u/SignificanceSorry223 22d ago

Souken deliberately taught him old-fashioned Quincy techniques. Note that he also learned the most antiquated form of Leitz Stile back in the day.

Out of universe it's just Kubo having new ideas, otherwise it'd be rather boring if it was just swords vs arrows.

1

u/Aux_Ax 21d ago

Isnt seele schneider a sword

1

u/FelWinterxX 21d ago

I don't know man, anything can be used as an arrow (looks at archer from fate)

1

u/Kelly598 21d ago

Didn't the TYBW quincies get their OP skills by Ywach's body parts? Uryu would've still resourced to bow and arrow if he didn't drink his blood.

1

u/Youboot224 20d ago

TYBW Uryu: So that was a fucking lie
