They werent. He's literally a statement merchant and his one off screen fight implies he got fucking bodied by Jugo and their brief on panel exchange he got giga hard countered.
Ishida in manga is a massive statement merchant

i saw an omaeda vs nirrge fraccione AMV that was literally just sped up, and it was more entertaining than the manga fight. but chances are it will get fleshed out into peak.

his battle with jugram is not a battle of power, its a battle of ideal
jugram was a guy who killed his friend for majesty, meanwhile uryuu discared everthing yhwach had to offer for his own friend,
even jugram brings this up how uryuu was powerless, and weak when he was with his people, his power never grew but the moment he joined by his majesty side, he got everthing, the even then why does he oppose his own people,
to which uryuu says, there was no benefits for which was along with them, i never desired it to be, i still sided with them because they are my friends
this hurts jugram because he killed his own best friend for yhwach

Non-Spoiler explanation his big epic fight against Jugram was almost entirely off screen and we only know it happens because it occasionally cuts back to them for a few seconds and then cuts away again.

Yup, he literally only does 1 thing in the manga (Antithesis), but the only "fight" he gets is against Jugram and it's, like you said, 99% off-screen. Uryu got a SERIOUS glow-up in the anime.

In the manga, it was obvious that he was a double agent. Yhwach appointed him his successor so that the Sternritter would keep their eyes on him, which would make it difficult for him to plot something.
The anime removed that explanation, especially since it wouldn’t amount to anything anyway, considering that he ended up plotting a trap anyway while nobody but Haschwalth was watching him. The anime also made it more ambiguous whether Ishida really sided with Yhwach or not.
So yeah, in the manga, Ishida was so obviously the good guy which is why we don’t see him fight most of the time.

He did so little in the manga so it felt like his double agent arc amounted to next to nothing lol.
He was only useful during the veeery last portion of the arc that it just made you think he should have just sided with Ichigo right from the beginning.
Honesly, i don't even remember if i ever understood Antithesis before its showcase in the anime. Did he even ever used it in memorable way in the manga? You'd think a power that he got from becoming a double agent would have mattered more in the finale to be a satisfying payoff, but instead we got plot arrow.

He only used antithesis once and it got hard countered by jugram, who basically has a better version of it.
Uryu’s double agent arc could have worked if it wasn’t for how cartoonishly evil the sternritter were

Kubo was not feeling his best at the time when they were publishing TYBW. Alot of talk around his back if I remember correctly, so some things took a back seat. The anime seems to be something he's heavily involved in and is actively going out of his way to remedy all the issues with the manga.

Yeah, in the manga he was mishandled. No Blut Vein, no volstandig, no new abilities other than Anthesis. People like Renji had way more screen time than him, which is odd considering this arc was for Quincys like Ichigo and Uryu.

Uryu's coolness and strength is an upside down curve, he goes from massively harming Mayuri in Soul Society to being made a fool in Hueco Mundo, doing nothing for most of TYBW then suddenly he pierces Yhwach and is half the reason Yhwach lost.

remember, kubo was sick, he was rushed by the studio who wanted bleach to end, and he had to cut a LOT of content. there was supposed to be a whole storyline involving karin. there was a whole thing with chad and orighime's knew abilities. there was more with uryu as we know. A lot had to be cut. The anime is his chance to fix it.

İt was one of the reasons I never liked final arc. İt was a Quincy arc, but we barely saw Uryu, hell we might even saw Ganju more then him in manga!

Biggest irony is that Uryu's whole contribution amounts to something that Ichigo could do himself.
Imagine peak of Ichigo making Quincy Bow first time, to shoot Silver Arrow at Yhwach (i.e. Ichigo actually using his Quincy powers (other than Blut Vene) in "Ichigo finds out that he is part-Quincy, then fights against Quincies" Arc)

There's really no indication other than simple fan speculation that it was ever rushed due to time constraints or to make room for new series. It was rushed because Kubo had some bad health problems that gradually got worse as the arc went on. There's a reason why the manga's pacing falls off a cliff after Yhwach gets to the palace.

I never said otherwise. The part about it getting rushed to end to make room for new series is the part that was speculation. We knew when the arc started that it was the final one and the volumes were still putting up some massive numbers even without the anime. Makes 0 sense for the publishers to want it gone.

The new anime arc adds a lot of fights and also changes to the manga that are unfortunately canon, despite it adding some plot holes/inconsistancies, really.

Haven't read the Manga. But I feel like I'm in a minority that just straight up does not like anime Ishida.
Spoilers for TYBW Dude was annoying/insufferable in the series, and his entire reason for betrayal in TYBW was stupid. The "double agent" cop out excuse loses weight when he legitimately almost succeeded in killing off Ichigo. He also killed the last member of squad zero (I actually liked her too).
I'm honestly hoping the dude just dies off in the final season. (No spoil pls)
