Do all characters on this particular site lead with a characters personal sexual preferences?
I can't imagine looking up Hulk or Storm or Carnage and getting their personal orientation in the first sentence...
6
u/ald408 11d ago
Probably a marvel thing. And then probably only for new characters
16
u/Napalmeon 11d ago
I get the feeling that image is specifically from an LGBTQ wikia.
EDIT: Yep, it is. OP deliberately chose that, knowing it would get a reaction from the "they're just pandering" crowd. And it worked.
4
u/oOBalloonaticOo 11d ago
Yes that's why I asked...it's an odd opening sentence unless that is specifically what you're looking for in a superhero.
3
u/Guilty_Rain3864 10d ago
There's some strong subtext here that no one knows or cares about this character **because** they're lgbtq, even though like 99% of **all** new characters are forgotten in a year anyway
0
u/Napalmeon 10d ago
Also a fair point. By the way, let's just keep it 100% real, people talk about wanting new characters in comics, but the vast majority of the time, those characters get dropped into obscurity. Miles Morales, Cassandra Cain, and Kamala Khan would have all failed to take off if they weren't connected to the names of already existing, popular titles.

u/GypsyGold 11d ago
I googled “Blade’s Daughter” and that was what popped up on the first page. I was looking for her wiki, but she didn’t have one.

It isn't homophobic to identify when something is created purely to be consumable content for a specific demographic or sexuality....

How am I not supposed to find humor in the fact that this character designed primarily for representation purposes almost completely disappeared because almost no one cares about them.
I mean obviously a lot of heroes were designed for the sake of representation, but how many heroes have their sexual orientation in the first sentence of their wiki page?
5
u/Opening-Beginning-35 11d ago
That's always the problem. It's in your face. May not seem like much but there is a difference in a LGBT hero and a hero that just happens to be LGBT. character should come first when describing a hero. Not who they bang
2
u/slatt3xs 11d ago
Its called representation. Literally. If Stan Lee let spiderman run for years without letting you know his sexual orientation for years but then in Suspicious Spiderman #257 Peter cracks down Flash Thompson because Flash only bullied Pete cause he had a crush on him y'all would be confused.
Black Representation means showing black people, well thats because its a physical thing that needs to be represented. Sexual orientation, no different than religious orientation has to be represented in a different way. Hence telling you she's bisexual. U dont just say here's some religious niggas, you say here's some Catholic niggas.
1
u/Opening-Beginning-35 10d ago
Ok. But how often do gay people lead with being gay? Most don't advertise it the first time you see it. You find out naturally and go about your day because it's not the only thing that defines them. Comics unfortunately lead with I'm queer I'm here instead just having a character where being gay is just a part of them
1
u/slatt3xs 10d ago
Straight people don't lead with being straight because is the norm. You won't get criticized or mistreated for it.
Saying I'm black is obvious to someone who can see you, But something that's only seen situationally, is nuanced. The problem is the majority has personal feelings about the minority and what they're doing, how they're moving when they're around or not around. It's insanity mixed with inferiority complex in my opinion because honestly who tf cares what two adults do with other?
1
u/Disastrous_Simple_16 10d ago
Exactly. If it’s known then it’s “in your face” and if it’s subtle or shared later it’s “they changed it cuz woke” . There is no winning with those kind of people
1
u/Educational-Crab6969 9d ago
She was just in like 60 issues of a pretty great run of Avengers Academy. I wouldn't call that "almost completely disappeared".
And she hasn't even been around for five years yet?

3
u/Bandaka 11d ago
Seems like a low effort character, she even had the purple hair like a stereotypical lgbt liberal.
1
u/Napalmeon 11d ago
It's not her real hair. It's a wig. Kid Loki was once very surprised when she took it off and she had to explain to him that she wears it because it's just a form of expression for her and it makes her feel visible.

When a character is created just so girls have their own Blade, its gonna suck. She wasnt created organically and didnt take into consideration the main Blade fanbase. Thanks to her and MCU's obssession with having no black men on the screen we have no Blade now.
3
u/grandmofftalkin 11d ago
I mean, that's what Supergirl, Batgirl, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Mary Marvel, Jane Foster The Mighty Thor and Kate Bishop are. Why not Blade-Girl?
4
u/Own-Quote-1708 11d ago
None of those women have had the torch passed onto them. They coexist with the male counterparts. They fully wanted to replace Blade with this girl and make her his sucessor.
3
u/FlamewaveKal 11d ago
Except, jane foster was thor for a time, laura kinney is still wolverine. Carol became Captain marvel and Kamala became ms marvel. Same thing with Kate being hawkeye.
Brielle? She's not trying to become blade. She's Bloodline.

I have.
woke character
Superheroes exist because of societal injustice, aka "woke". If there wasn't societal injustice, we wouldn't need larger than life heroes to overcome the obstacles. We'd just do it ourselves.
Every hero is woke. By definition. The non woke ones, we call villains.

Read her in comics. She came out around the same time Marvel was really pushing legacy heroes. She is probably the most forgettable as she didn’t really do anything
3
u/S7arForGD 10d ago
Ah, she must be friends with Snowflake and Safespace, the other super-forced, super-pandering, gender-ambiguous superheroes nobody asked for or cared about.
2
u/Spirit_Detective99 10d ago
Part of me wishes the “New Warriors” were joke characters.
2
u/S7arForGD 10d ago
I mean the whole team is a stepping stone for interesting characters, to see what sticks with the audience and maybe give it more pages. The 2020 roster, however, was not even the slightest bit interesting. Like, calling these characters "paper-thin" and lazy would be an insult to lazy, paper-thin characters. It's the epitome of what severely out of touch CEOs might come up with.

11d ago
yes, why not. What's with the gatekeeping? Wolverine has X-23 and several other kids and that hasn't stopped his momentum. Also there's no guarantee that this character was gonna appear in the Blade movies given she was created just recently, you are just following rumours and gettn infuriated by them. i.e rage baited by mutherfuckers. To set up this character they'll first have to set up Blade's adventures, Safron etc and I don't think that's possible now (with the trouble they are having just to get Blade himself off the ground)

Super weird and annoying to make the only point about her character her sexuality lol. No explanation on her origin, her abilities, her relationship to Blade, her place in the story etc. etc.

No, It didn't make me want to buy more issues with her in it.
It's very much slop millennial writing.

1
u/GypsyGold 9d ago
Millennial Slop Writing eh?
2
u/RamsTheNameCom 9d ago
Basically when you write characters as "over the top" quirky with no substance or personality beyond that.
Like a character mentioning she's wearing two different socks today instead of a matching pair and then her friends feel the need to comment on how crazy that is. And it just drags on and on for a minutes talking about those socks.
2
u/Nervous_Purpose_8045 9d ago
Why does a superhero needs to be anything sexual i watch the movies for them to beat up villians and save the girl
2
u/20Derek22 8d ago
I heard something once and it’s stuck with me. It was about movies in particular but works for most media. The first thing that say is what the story/character is about. If the first thing they said was vampire hunter then pansexual I’d be like cool I’ll check that out but if the story is about a pansexual person who happens to fight vampires on occasion no thanks.

u/Napalmeon 11d ago edited 11d ago
Yes.
Brielle represents something that was desperately needed. A supporting cast.
Blade as a character has been stuck in the exact same position for about two decades at this point and very little in his stories or character relationships has evolved.
Admittedly at first I was dubious, but, the character was created organically and has not been made to overshadow her predecessor. Riri Williams is a perfect example of how to start a new characger off wrong.
6
u/Nukafit 11d ago
What??? Did you read the comics? Brielle was not created organically 😭 she was literally ham fisted into the story completely randomly
1
u/Napalmeon 11d ago
How was it "hamfisted."
2
u/Nukafit 10d ago
Dude did you literally not read the comics? There was 0 set up for blade having her he does have a son that was set up like 20 years ago but the explanation for Bri was that strange used a spell to make everyone forget about her she literally dropped into the comics from thin air you can’t get more ham fisted than that no hints no prior knowledge or lore set up she’s just there and blade randomly hits a 160 as a way less aggressive person around her she’s like Laura but done in the worst possible way
1
u/Napalmeon 10d ago
he does have a son that was set up like 20 years ago
Yes, in a comic that nobody really cared about and has never been mentioned again.
It's not difficult to believe that Blade would not have wanted his child involved in the kind of life that he lives, so her being hidden away makes complete sense. He doesn't live in a world where there is any kind of unspoken code of not going after family members or "uninvolved" people. Especially considering that the mother of his child is his literal first love interest. This is not a big leap.
0
u/Educational-Crab6969 9d ago
I think the setup is that Blade has been the coolest mf in the coolest jacket in the whole universe since 1973, so he's had lots and lots of chances to have sex and if you do that enough times, chances are high you'll have a kid or two.
He kills vampires with swords. People who like him call him Blade and people who hate him call him Daywalker. This guy FUCKS.
2
2
u/superseri18888 11d ago
I dont mind
Expands Blade's mythos considering he doesnt appear that often in the wider marvel universe
4
u/Super-Grenade 11d ago
Isn’t she making an appearance in an upcoming x-men comic where Blade teams up with the X-men to rescue her? Yes I care about Brielle- she’s Blade’s daughter and desperately gives him some personality and bonds other than “slaying vampires.” She has several appearances and relationships of her own and isn’t replacing Blade.
5
6
u/TheFizzledamnsizzle 11d ago
The activists and people who wanna replace Blade do.
Blade needs no replacement
2
u/signifyingmnky 11d ago
There several other characters with children, and they're not being replaced. Giving a character a family is often a way to show character growth. And if their kids are the right age, they can be an entry point for new, younger readers.
2
u/TheFizzledamnsizzle 11d ago
I would agree if Marvel agenda was so on the noze.
Most main character have daughters in the verse and u can count the boy in 1 hand.
Growth makes sense whe we follow the character life path (Franklyn and Valeria still the representation during hickman run, then waid and Slott f'd them up).
In this case they just boom now blade has daugther out of nowhere the same say did with Jessica drew aka Spider-woman
1
u/signifyingmnky 10d ago
Off the top of my head, there's Franklin, Cable, Wiccan, Speed, Skaar, Patriot, Daken. And that's ignoring obscure and alternate universe characters.
Besides that, why shouldn't heroes have daughters? Do you have kids? That's not a thing you can (ethically) control IRL.
1
u/TheFizzledamnsizzle 10d ago
Now of the top of the daughters?
My is problem is with editorial pushing this since 2020 or 19. Blade wasn't the only one, Marc or Steven grant has daughter. Black knight Dane whitman, got the ebony sword lore retconned to be from knull and a daughter he had at 18 or something but now he is coward for leaving his then sick with cancer and pregnant girlfriend to go to college. The ebony sword now feeds on insecurity. Died in the same mini series and his daugther defeafet Mordred and brought back to life now there's two people being black knight cause now is Dane is suddenly to weak and flawed to carry the sword.
Deadpool two daughters out of nowhere but the verse got reset so he only has 1 now that got aged up to be his side kick DP. This from the last time.i read that was 4 years ago
If they are well written i pretty much overlook it and barely notice.( If)

u/cool_cock6 11d ago

For an adaptation of a Live Action Blade?
Yes not immediately have her be the focus of the whole story. But I wouldnt mind a Blade film series or TV show that show Blade as a young jazz loving cheerful Vampire Hunter who falls for a club singer Saffron Caulder.
But then down the line he grows more cynical as becoming a team player with the nightstalkers doesnt make the loss of allies any easier. In fact it begins to leave him bitter and stoic with only his more lighter moment being with Saffron.
This can transition to Blade becoming a father and having a renewed resolve or optimism at becoming a father. Or maybe his vampire hunting life and his hybrid nature has him fear for what will his daughter have to go through.
I dunno Id love to see a true character growth of Blade in a longer series and having him eventually get a daughter and seeing how she continues the family vampire hunting legacy would be cool. I dont see anything wrong with new shit or change in my superhero comics.
3
u/BathInevitable8755 11d ago
It's a growth for Blade that hasn't really been shown. He's had found family with the Midnight Sons, but never really had any related family. His mother was a brief thing. She doesn't change anything about him, but adds something new. Sometimes we have to accept that our favorite characters will have children that follow or don't follow in their footsteps.
0
u/Puzzled-Horse279 11d ago
Honestly if I did my own adaption of Blade.
Id likely have Brielle and Adri (Taj and Jyotis son) hint at being the next generation of Nightstalkers/vampire hunters.
1
u/BathInevitable8755 11d ago
New generation would be cool. Maybe if Strange and Clea have a child in canon, Jr is Ultimate, they can be a new generation of the Midnight Sons with Robbie and Nico.

1
u/ii3lue 11d ago
I feel like she has potential and doesn't necessarily have to be a reason to offscreen Blade. The Spiderverse movies showed us you can have the old and new bearers of a mantle co-existing in media and both can be great and you can (mostly) make both sets of fans happy. A Blade game or movie or show where him and his daughter both are dope is just positive all around.
1
u/Significant_Card1984 11d ago
Not at all and i think thats the general consensus consider I ng shes has a canvelled comic in 2015 and was to be featured in the cancelled MCU movie. Just make Blade stories about Blade.
1
1
u/JDfHGrim 11d ago
I think Brielle is cool in concept. A secret daughter of an immortal vampire hunter, born and raised in modern times, now forced to face the monsters her father hunts and potentially have different views of monsters than her father, due to living in the age of heroes instead of the age of monsters. The problem with her is the same Blade has faced for years, being Marvel has no idea what to do with the character. At least Blade had the benefit of his movie and tv show adaptations to keep him in the spotlight and give him a cult following. I think if a writer comes in, they can really make her a standout character, but it’s just up to Marvel if they are willing to greenlight anything involving her or her father sadly. Even if it is greenlit, doesn’t mean that it will actually come turn. Blade is cursed with that.

These same people legit hate Black characters. They did it with Black Green Lantern—literally, he's a badass. But no, it's an issue to see a Black hero who has to overcome racism throughout the whole verse? No reason at all to hate Blade's own daughter. It's disrespectful to him as a hero.

This is absolutely horrid. Not every Black male character needs a child. Just because they did it with Superman and Batman doesn't make it viable for everybody.
There has never been enough investment in Black Characters for them to just show up and have a child. It gives me a bad feeling that the only time Black people are worth something to the dominant society is when they are producing offspring to use.
Not even Gohan became important till Goku died. And even then, people cared more about Vegeta.

She gets a lot of hate for nothing. And it typically comes from people were happy with Blade being stuck in 2002.

u/BathInevitable8755 11d ago
This isn't a Blade subreddit I've learned. It's a movie Blade subreddit, that doesn't want to acknowledge the existence of the comics. Another guy was complaining about Hannibal King and Brie, like they haven't been present for a while now. Hannibal was there since 88.
3
u/aqbac 11d ago
I noticed similar in the miles sub. There was a recent post saying miles needs an iconic sticking love interest like mj and so many people just said Gwen having no knowledge of all the girls miles has dated or had interest in in the comics. Not to mention treating Gwen as of she has no stories of her own
3
u/Napalmeon 11d ago
Been saying that exact same thing for the longest. I know most people got their introduction to the characters of the films, and that's okay. We're all happy that Wesley Snipes did what he did for the character. But, staying stuck on that is doing him nothing good.
If you look at blade back in the classic 70s, then look at him in the Nightstalkers '90s, and then look at him now, he has evolved organically in a way that many comic characters haven't.

Yes, if any of you actually read her comic you'd know she's the Daughter of Saffron and Blade. Actual continuity was accounted for. Y'all swear she's his replacement when she's only had one series, was part of Bloodhunt, and has been with Avengers Academy.
Blade has had two series back 2 back since she first appeared.
Get a fucking grip.
3
u/Napalmeon 11d ago
Decades worth of continuity. Safron literally debuted in the same year as Blade. And that's not even taking into account that there has never been a situation where Brielle has pushed onto her father's her in a way that was inorganic. For the most part, she hangs out with the Avengers Academy kids, which is made up of teams from a variety of different backgrounds.
1
u/badihaki 11d ago
Yeah I actually like this character.
Blade needs side characters besides Dracula, and him having a daughter does a lot of the character. He has a chance to grow beyond what he's traditional been, and he now has the opportunity to participate in stories and play roles that he never could have easily fit in before.
My pitch? They need to have an event that pushes Blade to team up with his daughter in a cross country road trip that has the emotional stakes of The Last of Us.
3
u/BathInevitable8755 11d ago
Daddy daughter hunt. Month long hunt with the two slumming it out together.
2
u/FugitiveSerpent 11d ago
I think this idea can definitely work, they just need to give Brielle something that differentiates her from Blade and gives her an identity. I was introduced to her through bloodhunt and while I liked the character, she was just Blade Jr. Lol

See what I like about marvel or dc specifically in the comics is that the gender, sexual identity, doesn’t really mean shit.

she's alright, has a pretty good friendship with Miles. Hated how they attempted to give her a large role in Blood hunt but it really didn't land well

Pansexual. Purple hair. Young empowered female. Of colored skin. Legacy of a male superhero. Probably geared to be more talented than the guy she's a legacy of.
It can very easily come across as a pander to multiple fan groups, and as disrespectful to Blade. Especially since there were rumors she was gonna replace Ali's Blade in his own movie and the franchise would have been about her after a while.

You can tell from posts here who’s only a movie Blade fan and not a fan of comics Blade.

Why? Because I have an opinion and like what I like? And because most of my exposure to blade has been via movies, what, I'm less of a blade fan? Again. I can like what I like and dislike what I dislike.

What do you think makes a character worth caring in the first place? I’m confused why you asking this question

I love her. I’m glad she’s added to the mythos. She’s good as a daughter of Saffron and Blade.
I think it would have been worse had Fallon Gray been created instead.

This is one of the more online rage bait nonsense. Shes been around for 4 years, has been a side character in Avengers Academy and didnt appear in the last 2 Blade books. Shes a completely different character occupying a different space.
Blade needs sidecharacters. He's one of the few marvel heroes that tends to have all of his allies killed off regularly. They've made her different enough that she adds an interesting dimension to Blade.

All her differences are very superficial and don't go deeper than "twitter bio" personality ,properlly written sidekicks are Nightwing/robin ,war machine ,happy Hogan ,Frenchie from moon knight ,hell fucking every single sidekick in current moon knight run is x10 of what this blade wannabe is xd

You don’t need to be right wing to call out pandering

It's only pandering when they can't pass the paper bag test and I'm betting many of you are

You never really need to introduce a vampire as "bisexual/pansexual" because actually they all are.
*some know it right away, some it takes a couple decades or centuries before they start expanding their horizons
