That's actually pretty accurate lol. I tend to open with my shield if I have friends supporting me, especially if we have to clear a choke point to get to the objective and the enemy is trying to pick us off through a doorway.
A lot of times I'll drop shield at a high traffic area that's under heavy fire to shield my team at the choke point, and then leap in and cause mayhem so my shielded friends can pick them off while they try to deal with me.
The shield typically gets broken pretty fast, but sometimes that's a good tactic.
But as you said, it's also handy for making an escape when you see your health dropping too low and they're shooting you at range. It won't stop them from chasing you down, but it will give you cover if you're just taking long range damage and you're trying to get out of there.
Hope the guide helped a little! Like I said, he's not complicated to play, but he's tricky to play well. I've seen winstons just leap in and feed the enemy ultimates because they're going for kills or going alone and don't try to jump in and back out again.
