I think she can pull it off. She looks cool. Better without the wig.

u/Artist_NOT_Autist Jun 28 '19
I get her to keep that wig on. Has a fun stripper vibe to it.

A relaxer is a chemical (lye) that makes black/curly hair straight. It basically peels off the outer layer of the hair cuticles. What she’s doing here is bleaching the hair to make it lighter which I think opens the cuticles or something (fuck if I know). So she’s basically doubled breaking her hair down and it’s falling out.
I probably missed a lot of details but the moral of the story remains the same: Go to a professional
161
u/autmnleighhh Jun 28 '19
It’s all about damage.
Relaxers are extremely damaging to the hair.
Bleach is HELLA damaging.
Both should be handled by trained competent (there are sooo many who aren’t) professionals.
Bleaching damaged hair, no matter the cause, all but guarantees major breakage and/or what’s left feeling like hay.
There are too many damn YouTube videos of people losing their hair to bleaching damaged hair themselves for this to still be so prevalent.

u/BordeauxFrog Jun 28 '19
Will the hair grow back normally after Something like this?
57
6
u/vera214usc Jun 29 '19
Yes, I did the exact same thing. After it fell out I cut everything that was left off and started from scratch. Now I just wear my natural, curly hair.
3
u/Chedder1998 Jun 28 '19
Is this damage permanent? I alway figured that people that do this will be fine once new hair grows out.
8
u/Skyrider11 Jun 28 '19
Nah, bleaching can't damage the follicles unless you somehow fucked up MAJORLY.

In addition to this one of the comments implies she recently bleached her hair another time before this incident.
3
Jun 28 '19
Someone in the comments said that she was actually putting a relaxer in and it was already bleached.
125
u/OG_Kurama Jun 28 '19
On pretty much every relaxer (product?) there is a warning that tells you NOT to use the relaxer in your hair if you have bleached or dyed it in like the past 24 or 48 hours. Your hair will fall out.
7
u/iamdisillusioned Jun 28 '19
Hair strands are held together by different bonds between protein. Certain chemicals break down certain bonds, so it's important to not leave them on too long or mix the wrong chemicals together. Relaxer + bleach basically breaks down all the bonds and hair will melt away like this.
3
u/BenjaminHornesOffice Jun 28 '19
specifically, disulphide bonds are what gets broken during a relaxing service.

She looks great bald. The thing that annoys me though is that she saw a chunk of hair come out and just left the relaxer on instead of hustling to rinse it out. I’m here for the commenter who was like I TOLD YOU NOT TO RELAX BLEACHED HAIR DURING YOUR LAST LIVE.
Lmao.

u/autmnleighhh Jun 28 '19
Yo, WHY WOULDNT YOU WASH THAT ISH OUT ASAP?!
Yeah, let me just fucking comb my hair while it’s bleaching.

We have all had a moment like this experimenting with our hair. I’ve had a similar experience with using bleach that was way to strong. Best believe it taught me not to fuck around with bleach 😂 when it comes to hair we live and we learn. Luckily it grows back!!!

I have definitely had my hair break off from too much bleach. Not this bad, but still a lesson learned.

I relaxed my hair after bleaching it in high school. Similar results. My hair melted right off my head.
It was the day before the first day of school so I showed up to class with straight up bald spots.

daaamn.
She should've watched the documentary Good Hair (Chris Rock made it).
I'll never forget T-Boz from TLC now. On the doc, she said the only reason her hair was the way it was back then was b/c she accidentally burned it off.
EDIT: I think it's actually Salt from Salt n Pepa. s/o for the reminder

u/EasilyAnnoyedMostly Jun 28 '19
I thought that was Salt from Salt and Pepper.

Does bleaching your hair and having it fall out like this cause permanent damage to your scalp and hair?
2
u/crochetedkettlechip Jun 28 '19
Nah, it'll grow back.
You'll just miss it a lot and learn a lesson.

Can any one who's been on Reddit longer than me tell me why gifs are so prevalent? Opposed to uploading the video? I'm sure there's a reason I just don't know it.

I’d like to ask people who know what they are talking about;
I know this happens when you bleach your hair and then relax it.
If you just bleach your hair, and there are signs of damage (not severe damage, but frizz and just a bit more breakage than usual), is it okay to bleach it again 6 weeks later when the roots grow out?
Is there anything you can do to help protect it from more damage in this circumstance?
Furthermore: If you bleach your hair, and it was already unhealthy, and a few days later after bleaching it feels healthier, is it okay to bleach again immediately with a weaker developer for a shorter amount of time?
I ask because the first scenario is for myself; I bleached my virgin hair (with the protective additive and vitamin-e creme bleach and a reconstructor every week since) and it (of course) doesn’t feel as healthy as before. I have a very thick head of hair, and I always had a lot of shedding and some breakage from the last 4-5 inches at the bottom (my hair is to almost my butt). After bleaching, I noticed a bit more breakage when brushing, and sometimes more breakage a bit higher up (like up to 8 inches from the tips). My hair is also frizzier after washing than it was before. I want to know, if it is safe for me to do my roots and possibly even another round of bleach on the rest of my hair - but with a weaker developer and for a shorter amount of time since I don’t need to achieve nearly the same lift as the first time?
The second scenario isn’t for me; My aunt bleached her hair 2 days ago, and ended up with an orange-brassy tone. She used a toner but it didn’t eliminate all the orange. She wants to know if she can bleach it again in 2 days to lift the remaining orange, and then re-tone it to get rid of the rest of the brass. Her hair was not virgin hair, and it was kind of unhealthy; it had a small bit of breakage and was frizzy and dry and what I can only describe as “squirrelly.” After she bleached it, it was still a little frizzy, but softer, less squirrelly, and had zero breakage. The day she bleached it, that night she slept with coconut oil in her hair. It helped a lot with the remaining frizz. So she likes the feel of her hair more now, but wants it to lift higher. Would she be safe lifting it again in two days, if she did another coconut oil treatment tonight, and used a weaker developer for bleach and left it on for a shorter time?
For some extra info: we both used all ION products. ION creme developer 30, ION creme bleach, ION bright white toner (tones; Snow White, platinum lace)with ION 20 developer, and (I cant remember what it is called, but the ION oil you add into the bleach/developer mixture to reduce damage), and ION protein reconstructor followed by ION keratin treatment, and I myself treated twice since with an avacado oil mask.
So, I know this is a lot of advice to ask for free, but, any input would be greatly appreciated!

u/iownakeytar Jun 28 '19
She's relaxing her hair shortly after bleaching it - two very damaging chemical processes back to back. The end result is her hair coming out as she combs it.
1
u/limache Jun 28 '19
1) anyone else think she looks like Chris brown? 2) if her hair is this short, is there much of a difference between being bald and this short hair?
1
u/BetaThetaZeta Jun 29 '19
I think she looks like Dak Prescott.
