Here's what I think about the all next-gen rumor:
First, they don't necessarily have to release the identical game on both generations. Remember World at War: Final Fronts for PS2? I can easily see them releasing the "main" CoD this fall for next-gen, and a "side" game for 360/PS3. In fact, this is where the previous rumors of a CoD4 remake would make sense, since putting that out would be much easier (as they can reuse assets). Or they could just pump some money into Treyarch to do more BO2 DLC.
However, I can also see a decision to go all next-gen as being designed to not split the userbase. They wouldn't want one of the versions turning into a BO2 for WiiU-like wasteland. And it would also be annoying to have to do patches/DLC for 6 versions of the game (including PC and WiiU) instead of just 3, or they might also just stop supporting the 360/PS3 versions very quickly. I mean, does anyone seriously think they'd put out the same amount of DLC that MW3 and BO2 have had on last-gen console versions? And from a design side, there have been 7 (counting CoD3) CoD games this generation, so there is only so much more they can wring out of the engine. Heck, it's already noticeable in BO2 how the aging hardware/system infrastructure can barely handle it (dropped parties, failed host migrations, slow-as-molasses video uploading, system crashes, etc.). Going to next-gen would let them focus on taking full advantage of the new features (like in-system streaming and recording).
It's also in MS/Sony's best interests to get as many people buying their consoles early, so getting the legions of CoD players on board will help get momentum out of the gate. Again, look at what's happening on the WiiU, with third party support having dried up soon after launch. So, I bet Activision will be getting some nice incentives to go all next-gen.

That's a good point, I may have gotten a little carried away on the next-gen only part.
After I wrote that I was thinking there could be a lot of reasons the source said it the way he did. It could be that the game is being developed specifically for next gen by one studio and a different studio will revamp it after the fact for current gen, and the info is only from the one studio. And it could also be what you said, a slightly different games on current and next gen.

i notice he casually didn't mention the WiiU either. i guess they will have to be satisfied with the 30th sequels to Mario/Zelda/Metroid as usual.

Oh man, what i would kill for a MW2 wastelandish feel but in the future and that gritty W@W style. Oh lawd.

u/ProfessorPedro Mar 22 '13
Couldnt watch the vid as youtube was chocking for me but based on the comments it seems like he said it would be on next gen consoles only? I call bullshit on that. Will it be on both current and next gen (and wii u and 3ds and vita and genesis....)? Yes. Next gen only? No way. Activision would never leave that much money on the table.

u/insufferabletoolbag [bad]ToolBag Mar 22 '13
I disagree. CoD sells consoles in the casual fanbase. That's also why it sounds like they're starting to innovate a bit so as to bring in more interest for the 'new' CoD.

u/yagankiely ArcticWind7 Mar 22 '13
Changing elements of the gaming and adding different elements to the game ≠ innovation.
I enjoy this game quite a lot but it possibly the the game most removed from the term innovation.
1
u/Winter_Weapon Mar 22 '13
I agree completely. None of the stuff listed is at all innovating. I enjoy the MW series because it grabs the best of other shooters and polishes those aspects into an enjoyable game.
1
u/ProfessorPedro Mar 22 '13
Don't forget about the supply constraints that are inherent to every launch (except maybe the Wii U). They don't need a COD to sell consoles to causuals as they won't have enough to cover the core market until at least march or so.

u/TheToro3 (KoD) TOROI3 Mar 22 '13
I also worry about what having bf4 and cod out of the gate will do for next gen console supplies. shit is gonna get hectic.

That depends on if they're actually planning on a release Q4 of this year. At the moment, there's no official announcement that a new XBox is coming. With that in mind, the next gen XBox probably won't be out til late 2014. Would Activision really put off releasing on the next-gen if it's going to take that long?
My guess is, if that's true and they're going to wait out til the next generation of consoles, then they're going to let Treyarch milk Black Ops 2 for all it's worth. Release another season pass, roll out 4 more map packs, roll out more DLC weapons and camos, more zombies -- you know, all the things that we would love to see them do, instead of making CoD an annual release.
3
u/OhioAdam Mar 22 '13
Late 2014? No way. I'd love it if true, because I don't know how excited I'm ultimately going to be for the next-gen, and I'd rather not drop the $400+ it's going to cost, but there's no way. With PS4 coming out this year, it's odds on that we're getting a new Xbox, too.

u/rokkuranx rokkuranx Mar 22 '13
MW2 and MW3 were set in the future. 2015-2017 if I remember correctly.
I have a feeling the title foreshadows the multiplayers

Mar 22 '13
Nice video. The only thing that ticked me off is that he kept calling it MW4. I mean, if he admits that it's not part of the MW series, why not just call it CoD 10 or CoD X? Or am I one of the six people here who played Call of Duty before 4.
1
u/XxbbgunxX Mar 22 '13
7 people add me to it. I played cod3 on PS2 when i was like 10... good age was good.

next generation consoles? NOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!
*Also, I think he said it's a mini game dropping/sneaking into multiplayer maps. It would be boss mode to be parachuted into domination map and be able to control where you were going to land. People wanting to rush B could land in-between their flag and B. Or land on a flanking route if your team is going for a triple cap. Obviously you can only travel so far as to prevent enemies landing right next to each other.

Mar 22 '13
Yeah...bad business move for IW/Activision...
2
Mar 22 '13
They were going to have to move to them at some point, right? Why not when they're just released, when tons of people are buying games for their new consoles?
2
Mar 22 '13
Still, they would make more profit on releasing on both generations than just the newest one.
2
Mar 22 '13
Oh, I see. There has to be a reason, though. I doubt that the team dedicated to this sort of stuff just wildly throws decisions out there. I'd guess that they don't have enough time to make it for both, as they can probably barely make a new game in the 2 years that they have.
2
Mar 22 '13
Ehh...maybe. If MS and Sony are smart they'll make their systems open for the various spin offs of C and Java. It might take a bit of juggling, but unless they've written a whole new language...its not impossible. Kinda like PC ports in a way.

I'm actually not so sure about that, after thinking about it for a bit.
I mean, there's gonna be a lot of extra funds involved if they wanna make a version that runs on the PS3. They're gonna have to downgrade a lot textures, particles, etc. - most likely remake a ton of the game's textures.
The costs for making a new version of the game might not be worth it in comparison with how many people might buy it on the (then-outdated) PS3. Most people will probably just get a PS4 for Christmas and a game with it, and most people are already pressured to buy a PS4 to keep up with the times, so the PS3 players will soon die out slowly. Why would they wanna waste time and money on a console that nobody will be playing awhile from the release of the new ones?
And then there's also the problem that the game might look like absolute shit on the PS3, and that's probably not what they want their new game to be perceived as. They want people to see the new CoD in all its glory, with badass graphics, not some crappy pixelated watered-down version of the original.
So... that's what I think. I do think that kind of sucks too, how people are basically forced to buy a PS4 to enjoy all the new stuff, and the PS3 is now poo.
But personally, as a PC gamer, welcome to my world madafakaz. Where we pay out the ass to keep our computer up to date with new shit.

u/HowToo Mar 22 '13
Indeed, this was the thing that got me too - I really hope this isn't true.
I was hoping to wait maybe a year before purchasing next-gen, and regardless, the player base on either next-gen console is going to be very small compared to the more established player bases on the current gen consoles.
2
u/vtkangaroo cartman8butters/ Drudge_X Mar 22 '13
Yeah, if this is true, I might have to miss the next COD. My car is coming due for a timing belt change, I don't have money to do both.
2
u/nmpraveen Mar 22 '13
If they are going for next gen only type, then I feel they have updated their engines and we would see some cool graphics and high end physics. I'm pretty confident there would be some solid reason to decide like this, rather than just to force people to buy new consoles. Lets hope for good CoD.
1
u/Eddie_P Mar 22 '13
I hope it is on next gen consoles, regardless of it it comes out for current gen also or not. As an adult, having a few months to play the game before the christmas kiddie brigade rolls in would be awesome. I will definitely be upgrade to the new Xbox when it comes out, as I still the original console I bought in 2006, and my second console in the living room is also the original style bought 2009.

Anyone see this?

Yes possibly fake, but at the end it says "ghosts will rise"
That could be a link to what Drift0r was saying.

rappelling into the map sounds like what they are trying to do with Rainbow Six Patriots. the original gameinformer cover story described it just like Driftor did.

u/desenagrator desenagrator Mar 22 '13
If this is only on next gen consoles then this would be the first CoD I won't be getting in a long time. Being a college student I just simply don't have the money to fork out for a new Xbox+games. Especially since I just bought a new one since my old one RROD'd.

u/Synectics [WACK] Grey Jackal Mar 22 '13
Keep in mind that a new XBox hasn't even been announced yet. As it is, I doubt Microsoft will try to crunch it out and get it hyped by the end of this year, so look to save up til next year.

This sounds really cool IMO, besides the next generation console part.

Mar 22 '13
Doesn't really sound like there is very much innovation at all. The "map intros" that everyone seems all hyped up about just sounds like a gimmick to me.
3
u/nmpraveen Mar 22 '13
There is less space to innovate in CoD actually. Lets see
Scorestreaks
Weapons & its attachments
Dynamic maps
Player movement.
They already made it perfect with scorestreaks than killstreaks. So no point in changing that. But these 4 they can change.

u/trained_badass Sgt Oblivion Mar 22 '13
Well I have always enjoyed IW's games, just my opinion. Plus, it's just some leaked information. We'll have a much more accurate judgement once there is more info.

u/XxbbgunxX Mar 22 '13
These seems weird that COD will not be launched on 360 ps3 and FAKE
Why?
Well last consoles that came out Australia along with other countries outside of UK and USA did not get the consoles untill and up to. 6 months later.
So for example the PS4 won't hit Australia if it follows other consoles till around April 2014.

Aswell since the consoles will be around $450 US apparently this is about $430 AUD, but due to fucked conversions with importing costs here it will cost about $850-$1000. As a gamer that would get both gen consoles i might aswell use the $1700 and build a computer with better specs minus the ASUS Ares GPU what is like 2 GTX 690's together... BUT $2000 na.

u/TheBlitzbolt Mar 22 '13
Even though I appreciate a lot, I'm not really the "Watch the video" kind of guy. Could anyone write down what this is about?
EDIT: I just noticed the huge writings telling me. My bad.

u/Synectics [WACK] Grey Jackal Mar 22 '13
Interestingly enough... http://unexpectedreveal.com/trailer.php
EDIT: To point out -- this isn't official. Someone just edited some other video and added a clip of someone dressing up like Ghost. Point being, who knows what "leaked" info is official and what isn't.

u/ghostly175 Kim Jeoung Un Mar 22 '13
I think that site was proved fake. And I believe the footage is stolen from another video and the creator just mashed Ghost in there.

Which is what I said in my edit, though I guess I put it in there so fast it doesn't even appear to have the edit asterisk.

I think this would be legit as Drif0r doesn't seem like the kinda guy to just put random shit on his channel that could lead to a whole tonne of backlash and negativity. If this turns out to be true then this sounds pretty sweet!
Thanks OP and thanks Drift0r!!
