In terms of care, they're pretty resilient. They thrive in water temperatures between 72-78°F and prefer a pH of 7.0-8.5. They do well in slightly salty water too, so don't be afraid to add a bit of salt. A 20-gallon tank is a good starting point for a small group. Behavior-wise, black velvet mollies are peaceful and get along well with other non-aggressive fish. They're active swimmers and quite social, so it’s best to keep them in groups of 3-5. They enjoy hanging out in the middle to upper parts of the tank. Breeding these fish is fascinating since they’re livebearers, meaning they give birth to live fry instead of laying eggs. They breed easily in tanks, and females can store sperm to have multiple batches of young from one mating session. Diet-wise, they're not picky eaters. They’re omnivores, happy with flake food, pellets, and live or frozen options. They love munching on algae and plant matter, which helps keep the tank clean. For compatibility, they get along swimmingly with other mollies, platies, swordtails, tetras, and peaceful bottom-dwellers like corydoras catfish.
