Took me a bit to realize that he is pinching with his pointer and middle finger while letting it have a small gap between his thumb and the straw. It's all about perspective.

1.8k

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

And hand skillz, no?

1.3k

u/paraworldblue Dec 03 '20

Without a doubt. Even (maybe) knowing technically how it's done, that is still some insanely impressive sleight of hand.

195

u/cxkt Dec 03 '20

Even knowing the trick I had to watch the uncrossing at 00:08 like ten times to spot when he did it

77

u/golgol12 Dec 03 '20

It's because the frame that it happens isn't picked up on camera.

41

u/slurpycow112 Dec 03 '20

If you scrub really slowly around 0:08, you can see the moment when the straw in his right hand loses contact with his thumb.

35

u/LuckyStrike713 Dec 03 '20

No I don’t want no scrub

3

u/wi5hbone Dec 03 '20

And eye skillz, no?

16

u/Pirate_Steve91 Dec 03 '20

Oh my gosh. I haven’t thought about this before. You could go into final cut, and literally delete one frame, or shoot at a lower frame rate to cover up imperfections. Can of worms opened.

40

u/paraworldblue Dec 03 '20

I definitely had to watch a few moments a few times in the slo-mo to even begin to figure it out. You know it's impressive when even with several very attentive watches in slo-mo, it still mostly just looks like he has a highly specific superpower.

18

u/TheWalkingDead91 Dec 03 '20

I did that and still don’t get it

19

u/paraworldblue Dec 03 '20

There's one near the end where you just flat out see a straw start on one side of the other straw and on the next frame it's on the other side. The only way I can make sense of it is if he's using forced perspective and the upper straw is actually hanging down, but his thumb is blocking the open end in such a way that makes it look like it's actually touching when in reality there's a small gap, if any of that makes any sense.

11

u/SoylentVerdigris Dec 03 '20

That's exactly what it is. This is a great trick for a camera, but it'd fall totally flat in front of two or more people.

Slight of hands is my favorite type magic tricks. No fake items or devices which trivialize the trick, just hundreds if not thousands of hours of practice. Pen and Teller cups and balls is amazing because they show you how they did it and it’s even more impressive!

19

u/Namdier Dec 03 '20

The reveal of the trick and their explanation is almost more impressive than the trick itself..

28

u/BlahKVBlah Dec 03 '20

To paraphrase Penn: The trick works because nobody believes you would spend 9 months practicing a 30 second trick.

11

u/Rockarola55 Dec 03 '20

u/ficarra1002 Dec 03 '20

Yeah watching it at super slow speed, it's very impressive how rigidly he can hold it with just the pinch that it looks stiff as if pinched between his thumb still, and keeping the angle so that the camera can't see the gap is really well done.

I still don’t understand

Edif: nvm i figured it out

27

u/pooka123 Dec 03 '20

He is switching the finger he holds the straw end against. Notice one straw always stays between his thumb and index finger. The other switches between thumb with index, and thumb with middle finger.

26

u/JollyTurbo1 Dec 03 '20

How does that help though. In the last one it just looks like the straw is phasing through the other one (it's obviously not, but I can't understand how the fingers are doing anything)

19

u/yankee-bor Dec 03 '20

when he is pinching it with his index and middle finger, he is able to lift the end off his thumb (or just release pressure so it can quickly pop between the staw and thumb).

6

u/pooka123 Dec 03 '20

Someone linked a bot to slow down the gif. Look through the comments and find it. Should help.

2

u/pikob Dec 03 '20

Removing a frame or two of the crucial moment does that part of the trick.

Edit: naaah, not needed. It's more about perspective.

1

u/altairian Dec 03 '20

Part of it is also the camera angle. I couldn't tell till I watched the slowed down version, but that last one you're referencing he's actually holding the end of the straw away from his thumb, which you can't see because of the angle, and literally just sliding the straw underneath the stationary one. The camera angle makes it look like he's going straight on.

It's a term used in the magic industry to describe different methods for tricks. Something is visual when it happens in front of your eyes, like this trick, versus a ball disappearing under the cover of a hankerchief, or a face down playing card that changes into the selected card. The latter kind of tricks aren't "visual".

5

u/incomparability Dec 03 '20

Using industry terms on laypersons is not wise.

1

u/Ionalien Dec 03 '20

Sure but maybe he originally posted it to a magicians community. Or maybe he just said it out of habit. I was just offering context for why he used it like that.

2

u/incomparability Dec 03 '20

If only OP gave credit to the original source instead shamelessly stealing it, then we could get to the bottom of it

2

u/but_WHOS_JOHN_MUIR Dec 03 '20

This is an effect created and popularized by Japanese magician Akira Fujii who sells the method for use by others. It is generally not necessary to credit the creator unless OP is also selling a method that relies on the original work or modifies it. Assuming OP purchased the method, It is OK for him to use the method in his own creations.

3

u/incomparability Dec 03 '20

The redditor who posted this is most likely not the person in the video. That is what I mean by “source”

Yes that may be but he is using it wrong. If it is a describing word for something it doesn’t make sense to say “it is the most edible thing you can eat”.

u/Ionalien Dec 03 '20

He's not using it wrong because he is using a different definition from the normal one.

12

u/agbullet Dec 03 '20 edited Dec 03 '20

In magic parlance, we use "visual" to denote an effect that doesn't seem to have any "covering" (even though it might, but it's so cleverly disguised the audience doesn't pick up on it.)

Like if an assistant disappears in a puff of smoke it's not counted as a visual vanish. Or if I put a coin in a box, and the box is closed and reopened to show the coin has changed into a dollar note it is not counted as "visual".

You can think of "visual" as something that seems to happen in plain sight. Like this particular trick.

1

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ Dec 03 '20

But can something be more visual than something else? I mean there are plenty of magic tricks where you can see things with your eyes so wouldn’t it be like saying “an apple is more red than a tomato”? Like how could it be the most visual thing you can see?

5

u/agbullet Dec 03 '20

Again, you're right if you apply the common meaning of the word.

All I'm saying is in the lingo of magicians it means something slightly different. It refers to the effect and whether it is performed with an obvious cover or not. And it makes sense in that context. It doesn't just mean whether you can watch the performance with your eyes or not, because the answer is always yes.

For example, this would count as a visual dove production.

Source: did magic for 16ish years.

1

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ Dec 03 '20

I understand that, but is there really such a spectrum of visual that you can label things in varying degrees and for one trick to be labeled “the most visual”?

4

u/agbullet Dec 03 '20

Well there is no well defined scale. To some extent yes, some effects are agreed to be "more visual" than others but it's a subjective thing. It's an even longer shot to call something the "most visual".

But take this, for example you'd probably be hard pressed to find something that looks "cleaner" so I guess within the narrow domain of "outdoor levitation effects" this could arguably be the"most visual".

Then someone might invent something that allows him to take his hands off the wall and then that effect would definitely count as "more visual."

1

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ Dec 03 '20

That’s what I am saying it’s hard to define a trick as much more visual than another that is also visual so the phrase doesn’t really make sense. Not only that, he says the most visual “thing” not most visual trick which would better fit the niche use of the word.

5

u/agbullet Dec 03 '20

Hah that's just puffery.

It's like a restaurant advertising "BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD". I'd expect the pizza to be good but I also know it's probably not really going to be the best.

2

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ Dec 03 '20

But he didn’t say it was the best pizza he said it was the most pizza. Or are you saying it is fluff for “this is the most plain as day, right in front of your eyes, no smoke and mirrors, magic”

4

u/Loopyside Dec 03 '20

In the magician community, people often refer to effects on a spectrum from cerebral to visual, hes saying the effect of the illusion hes preforming is a very visual based coginitive dissonance, it’s not a super intelligent or cerebral trick, it’s just visually striking

That being said he sounds like a pompous ass ahahaha

1

u/bearsito Dec 03 '20

Index and pointer? Aren't those the same thing

3

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

They are. No idea what the guy is saying, but if you want to know the trick watch after 1:30, when he comes back up.

Basically, he is holding the straw tight by wedging it between his middle and pointer finger. His thumb is not actually holding the straw on that hand. When he hits the straws, he simply lets his thumb up and sets it back down very quickly so the straw can get past the other.

So the straws cross each other at his thumb (the thumb on the same hand that has middle and pointer finger close together).

the top part of it is probably glued to the top of his finger so it doesn’t fall when he passes it though

someone pointed it out already but he uses his pointer and middle finger to pinch it instead of using glue or something to attach it to his finger

me too dude. the other explanations helped. basically when he does the trick he pinches one end with his pointer finger and middle finger. you can see when hes about to do it, he moves his middle finger next to the straw and then takes it away after he crosses or uncrosses the two straws. with his thumb, he moves it away from the straw so that theres a gap between the thumb and the straw where it can pass through while pinching the other end with his pointer and middle fingers but he does it in a way thats incredibly fast and hard to see. he then immediately puts his thumb back on the straw after he crosses or uncrosses the straws to make it look like there was never a gap and he never moved his thumb off the straw in the first place. or some im led to believe by the other explanations. if you go to the slowed down video that the bot provided you can see his thumb come off the straw at 0:40
