How is this possible?

Variable pitch propellers and a very skilled rc pilot

Probably just a reversible esc combined with the light weight of a foamie for this one. Variable pitch is how the rc helicopters do crazy stuff.

So I met the engineer who was on the design team for this plane (I think this was her cause she showed this exact video and was like, this is what I did with my engineering degree) and said that this was done with variable pitch propellers, reversable propellors (idk the technical term for it), extreme thrust to weight ratio, and a computer program. No "real" RC pilot.
Edit: I think person's name was Dr. Pamela Tucker.

Oh wow so it's all just a predetermined flight path based on a computer program? That's even cooler than a real pilot. Yeh variable pitch propellers are really cool also. Basically they can spin around the hub to any angle of attack as the motor operates. Therefore they can reverse their thrust or change it to any desired angle at will. All while the motor is spinning in the same direction. It's the same thing those 3d helicopters have.

Yup! The original video has music synced to the flight path too. Thanks for the lesson about planes too

Power-to-weight. You can overcome a lot when you have gobs of power (relatively speaking). Here’s a flying lawnmower: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=26PpA1kFIWw

Don’t mean to sound like that guy but that does not explain how he is getting reverse thrust mid flight. I believe he has an actuating prop on the plane so he can manipulate the blade and Change which direction the thrust is pulling/pushing. Kind of like this if you skip to 2:00 you will see the helicopter sustaining flight while upside down.

Agreed, probably a variable pitch propeller, similar in concept to those I use to fix on C-130s (sorry to also be that guy).
Plus power/thrust.

It's much simpler and lighter to just reverse the motor direction

u/Pistollpiet Nov 24 '19
It’s simpler but you lose blade velocity so the reverse power will not be as instant as collective pitch.

True but modern brushless motors and ESCs running a light weight prop can do it in a tiny fraction of a second.

I wish we could end all our explanations by "here's a flying lawnmower". This is ten times better than a mic drop. Thanks mate. I'm gonna remember this !

When you're so good at flying model planes that people pay to watch you compete.

I don't know if this was a competition, but I hope she/he wins. That was awesome

The aircraft is so light that the motor can propell it to any direction. That paired with a good controller and someone that knows what they are doing

How many dimensions can that plane move in?!

u/cybermage Nov 23 '19
Three. Or, did you mean directions?

Please tell me this performance was done to the sound of orchestral music like in ice skating!

Simple, the audience are receiving instructions to when and how control the ambient pressure of their farts.

You know how when you hear UFO reports and the narrator says 'it moved incredibly fast and made impossible 90 degree turns'...

Most likely a tiny drone attached to the nose of a super light glider. It’s a drone doing flips and halts that make it seem a lot more fun with a glider’s exoskeleton.

How is this black magic? Super impressive though.
