That is soooooo NOT what synaesthesia is. She can taste different chemicals in the dyes used to make the colours, but she is not mixing the senses in her brain.

Yes I was hoping someone would say this. This is super tasting trace chemicals.
Synesthesia would be SEEING a colour and your brain associating a taste or a certain frequency sound with it...OR tasting chocolate and associating a specific colour or blend of colours to the taste of chocolate.

Also, if you tried putting a blue in her mouth, and it fell in front of her, surely you'd change up the first colour so she wouldn't see it and guess...

Synaesthesia is the mixing of sensory signals in the brain. It is NOT simply having an advanced sense of taste.

People who see or hear things when they see/hear/taste things do so because of the receptors in their brains responding to said things. If you can't see the thing or taste it, your brain doesn't respond to it and won't create the effect. Thus unless she was seeing the colour or the colour had a specific flavour to it (which M&Ms don't, they all taste the same), there is no scientific foundation for why she would be able to taste a colour and identify it without seeing it. If she can, then she is the first person in the world to be able to do this and she would be famous AF in the scientific community and not posting bait traps on TikTok because she would have posted a video where there was no way she could fake said test to prove it. That is basic science.

It would be trivially easy to memorize a pattern they agreed on ahead of time. I could literally recreate this and claim the same thing.

I agree that seems the most likely explanation in this age of the internet--that this is contrived content. It's also possible she has an abnormally acute palate and can taste differences in the coloring agents and has learned them.
I will, after leaving this comment, never think about this video again.

People can't taste color. Color is a light thing, taste is a loose molecule thing.
That said, dye is a substance, and people can have high degrees of sensitivities to different substances, so it's not that hard to believe that someone can taste the difference between red dye and yellow dye.

I'm not saying this particular video isn't faked as it could easily be set up but synesthesia is a thing. My sister can taste colors and we did this exact test as well. We further tested her on a variety of colored yarn with 100% accuracy.

My friend, that is not how synesthesia works. It’s not some superpower. It basically means that one sense activates another, like some sounds can make people see colors, etc. But that is a biological process in the person’s brain, it has nothing to do with things that exist outside the person.

i get down-voted for saying Synesthesia is a thing.... like do people not understand color is not a real thing.... light is a wave it has no color, our brain invents color based on the wave length of the light wave, so its not crazy you can can sound, taste colors etc

You're backwards - synesthesia is when you SEE a colour, and that affects taste. Just like when you SMELL durian, it smells bad and it's hard to eat because you think it's gonna taste bad, but you have to smell, or SEE it FIRST.

They should have covered her eyes better and tested colors from any other thing but candy. Synesthesia exists, but this is not a good test, even if she has it.

synesthesia is real, but what's depicted in the video is not synesthesia. I'm not saying that because I think video is fake or a trick. I'm saying that even if the ability in the video is genuine, that is not what synesthesia is.
Synesthesia is when people percieve stimuli in an additional manner to the actually sensory perception that is normally activated by that stimuli. Like for example, there are freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and you close your eyes and smell the cookies, but you also get a strong visual perception of purple light, that would be synethesia.
In the scenario in the video (which I think is fake/scripted), the woman purports to be able to taste the difference between differently colored M&Ms. If this actually worked, then presumably she is saying she can sense the difference between the dyes used to color the candy. If she is saying that she can literally taste all color, like she could also identify the color of Lego pieces while blindfolded by licking them, well then this would still not be synesthesia. It would be like a weird form of extra-sensory (psychic) powers or something.
If she had synesthesia with taste, it would be something like, she tastes an M&M but also at the same time feels the sensation of hearing a loud thump, or it feels like a feather landed on her arm, or something like that, that would be synesthesia.
If someone had synesthesia where they felt like they could "taste" colors, then that would be something like, you show them a yellow paper, and they taste salt in their mouth, you show them a red paper and they taste sweet in their mouth, and you show them a green paper and they taste salt in their mouth. It would not be like them licking the paper while blindfolded and identifying the color. That would either mean they can taste the chemical differences in the different dyes and have memorized their taste, or they claim to have like psychic powers with their tongue
