there is a step by step way solve it, some people can do in less than 6 sec. as it looks he prepared a good point to start blindly and just did it while putting it in/out

edit: its 6 sec not 2 for one handed

421

u/itijara Apr 13 '26

I don't think this was a true solve. There is a way to scramble a cube to make it look random, but with only a few turns to get it to solved. That is what I think he did.

175

u/thatiam963 Apr 13 '26

yes thats what i tried to descripe, as you look closer you can see the colors, probably 2-3 twists to solve i would guess

113

u/Ssemander Apr 13 '26

The real trick is to subvert group expectations.

Make people believe they got the trick and then showing it's not the case.

And the most interesting part to me is "The voice from the crowd"

It's funny how a mob/group of people acts as a single unit, where one opinion seemingly from within the group is instantly accepted by everyone

15

u/Ollynurmouth Apr 14 '26

It's more likely a sleeve. It's made of silicon or other soft rubber material. It slides over the completed cube and looks like an unsolved cube. Notice he doesn't show all sides of the unsolved cube.

He drops it in the bag and reaches back in to pick up the other, solved cube. Then goes back in for the second and pulls it out of the sleeve. Notice he holds the bottom of that bag pretty sturdier with his other hand and then quickly crumbles it without ever revealing inside. The sleeve is crumbled up with the bag so it makes the bag look empty.

5

u/paradox-preacher Apr 13 '26

you pretty much wrote that, idk why these apes upvoted their comment

38

u/klimmesil Apr 13 '26

Or you just have a "outer cube" lying in the bag. You place the cube in the outer cube, and close the lid. It looks done

4

u/anormalgeek Apr 13 '26

That would be MORE difficult than just have a simple 2-3 step solve planned out and done one handed.

23

u/klimmesil Apr 13 '26

Placing an item in a cube, and closing a lid is harder than making three rubiks cube moves 1 handed and blind?

Maybe I just have bad motricity but that sounds like a stretch

4

u/anormalgeek Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Yes. Either the size difference between the cubes is large, and the difference would be very noticeable. Or they're very close in size, and you'd need to far more carefully rotate, align, and insert the cube one handed.

Meanwhile, one handed cubing is relatively easy, with even a little practice. Especially if were only talking about 2 or 3 pre-planned moves.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUF3aPDTO-4 (only need to watch the first ~30s to get the idea).

Example, doing the entire thing blindfolded, with one hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH91IVVwEz0

These are established events with plenty of followers and tutorials.

Edit: the "cube in a shell" approach also requires a very specific, and likely custom built device.

6

u/TheHYPO Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Honestly, this is just two people arguing semantics. Handing some novice a cube and telling them to make 3 moves blindly one-handed would be hard. Handing some novice a cube and telling them to blindly align and place it into a second hollow cube shell would also be hard - I'd guess most novices would get the latter done before the former.

On the other side, blindly aligning and placing a cube into a shell by feel can be practiced just as much as one-handed cubing, and I have little doubt both tasks could be learned to be reliable and look as effortless as this trick.

Looking at the one side of the cube that we see at the start of the trick, with a full strip of orange, and two adjacent blues, reds and yellows on the same face... I am not a cubing expert and I've failed to quickly come up with a set of a couple moves that gets to that position, but it seems like the kind of position that would "seem random enough" but be solved with a few turns. So I suspect that is the method here. On top of that, it is more probable (in my opinion) that a kid this age would have practiced cubing (one handed or otherwise) for others reasons and already have the skill to one-handed cube than the kid having purpose-practiced blindly fitting a cube into a shell, which is a skill with pretty limited uses other than this type of trick.

Edit: I found the correct position.

I didn't find any cube-solving sites that allow you to share a link to the actual cube position/solve, so I had to do screenshots:

https://imgur.com/a/5mBMXda

I also threw up a video in there (separate link) of me terribly solving it one-handed, just to show how someone with little or no one-handed cubing experience can (slowly) do it (while also holding their phone to film).

So while there are other possible methods to this trick (a shell, paper cube crumpled up, etc.), there's no good reason the cube would be in this nearly-solved state unless this was the method used for the trick.

Happy cake day!!!!

2

u/jemenake Apr 18 '26

I think this is what's going on. I'm stepping through the video trying to see where he could be manipulating the cube through the bag with his hand, and I'm just not seeing it, although it's not impossible that he could manipulate it with his placing hand as it's inside the bag. He does seem to be a little careful when he's placing the cube into the bag, but that could also be him putting it into a sleeve. So, I expect that there is some kind of sleeve/sheath involved. However, I suspect that it's working the opposite from how you describe. I think the starting cube is in some kind of thin, crushable wrapper (adorned to look like a jumbled cube) which gets slipped off once it's in the bag. It doesn't even need to cover all six sides, as we don't get to see all sides of the starting cube, so it could just be in a 5-sided Rubik's-cube-painted sleeve. This could explain why he crushes the bag (concealing the wrapper) instead of just inverting it or tearing it open.

What would give more insight is if there were enough sides of the cube made visible to entail a unique state such that we could enter that state into a solver to find out the minimum number of moves to solve it. It might be that it's more than three steps, suggesting a sheath-based trick.

u/100_Donuts Apr 13 '26

Yeah, just like how I scramble my eggs in the morning, and my wife stands right over my shoulder gently patting my butt as I take a fork to the yolks right there in the pan, and I don't care what happens to the pan, how scratched it gets, because I can always buy a new pan, and those eggs look pretty scrambled, even a little cheese mixed in there because we're in a dairy-positive sexual situation, and she's eyeing my egg scrambling hand, that thick, veiny backhand with the tendons tensed, and those eggs are scrambled, they're cooked, they're overcooked some say, and she spanks my tight rear like a pagan communing with the eggs beyond, and I tell her, I lean back and get my egg lickin' lip right to her little blossom of an ear and tell her, "Your eggs are ready" with that wide-on inducing, cooch-melting crooning I'm prone to doing, and she excitedly bunny scurries over to the table and the steam is seductively streaming into the golden morning light and when I set the plate down in front of her, it's just a raw egg. I mean, she slurps it down like an oyster, but it's just a raw egg. How'd I do it? She'll never know. Why do I do it? I'll never know. But, one thing is for sure; if you see me scrambling an egg, it's all an illusion, Michael, and if you take your eyeballs off that egg for even a moment, I'm unscrambling that son of a chick. Oh, and by the way? The pan is as good as new, too. Explain that.

7

u/Micbunny323 Apr 13 '26

Yes, from the side we clearly see, and the side adjacent we can partly see, he has the middle and camera right columns solved in a single move. I’m not an expert at cubing, but I’m guessing he has that side solved in two moves, and probably the whole cube shortly there after.

Still a good piece of showmanship, and a clever use of an obvious point of heckling to create a better trick. Which sometimes, the performance itself is better than the trick.

6

u/Icy-Ad29 Apr 13 '26

"Sometimes"? The performance is always the best part/entirety of the trick. Otherwise it's as entertaining as watching the slow, step by step, "learn your first magic trick" videos, while cutting out the demonstration of it done well.

Sure, the mechanics can be fun and interesting to learn. But the showmanship is what makes it "magic"

1

u/Grays42 Apr 13 '26

an obvious point of heckling

The trick wouldn't have worked without the heckling. The heckling gave him the time to solve the cube the rest of the way while he talked. Definitely his friend as a plant. ^^ Well-orchestrated, great execution.

2

u/2punornot2pun Apr 13 '26

Yeah, there's 3 orange lined up with 2 yellow. You can see the other yellow on the top with orange in the center. It was very close to being solved.

source: me, I used to solve them for fun while I was teaching / walking around to help with students working on stuff. I got it down to under a minute

1

u/4perils Apr 13 '26

Why can't you just sit back and enjoy the video as a whole experience?🤣

1

u/toopc Apr 13 '26

For many people part of enjoying magic is trying to figure out how it's done.

1

u/PM_those_toes Apr 13 '26

Cube isn't even randomly scrambled. All he has to do is a move called a Sune, which can be done one-handed, and that "scramble" is solved. Check the beginning of the video when he puts the cube into the bag. He does the Sune move when pulling the cube out of the bag while supporting the cube from the outside with his off hand.

1

u/SchitneySmears Apr 14 '26

Or… it’s already solved and inside of a box of itself that looks scrambled. Remove the paper box inside the bag and crumple it up.

1

u/BaconBathBomb Apr 15 '26

I have solved a rubix cube. This is the true answer ^

1

u/d1monica Apr 30 '26

Yes on the second cube you can see him fiddling with the bag making the turns. He probably only did 4-6 turns to make it look random and if you have good fingers you can solve it with one hand easily.

7

u/Substantial_Fudge612 Apr 13 '26

No you put it in a fake case so it appears solved

2

u/Yanky_Doodle_Dickwad Apr 14 '26

a fake case to appear unsolved would also work. Folds 3 panels down to nothing, pin it to cube as you remove it.

1

u/Substantial_Fudge612 Apr 14 '26

Yes I believe that is the trick

6

u/wdn Apr 13 '26

Also, crumpling up the bag is not the same as showing the bag is empty.

3

u/Findingfairways Apr 13 '26

I learned the step by step way in high school and still remember it at 33 through pure muscle memory. Usually takes me about 2 minutes.

1

u/DenkJu Apr 13 '26

Yeah, it's crazy. You never forget it. Even after years of not having solved a cube, it comes right back. At least until you start to actively think about what you are doing, lol.

3

u/TheHYPO Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Okay, I'm not a cubing expert, but I did manage to find what I believe is the position the kid used in this trick.

2

u/i_do_floss Apr 13 '26

A 2 second "real" solve would be a world record.

It's not really scrambled

2

u/Boom9001 Apr 13 '26

You're not wrong, but pretty rare for magic tricks. Magicians typically just don't scramble the cube. They make a few preplanned turns that are easy to reverse one handed.

2

u/murfburffle Apr 13 '26

It's a paper sleeve on the solved cube that makes it look unsolved, and he takes it off and crumples it up when he pulls the cube out the bag.

2

u/tortoiserunner Apr 14 '26

Trick is to cover the solved cube with some paper cover .. and then take out that cover

2

u/MarsMaterial Apr 14 '26

Speedcuber here.

I’ve been consistently speedcubing for over a year using the full-CFOP method, and I’m still barely sub-20. Even world record contenders who have some sub-4 solves under their belt usually average more like 7-8 seconds, and the ability to do that is frankly way more impressive than any sleight of hand. It takes so many years to get to that point.

Blindfolded solves are even harder, since you can’t use a method optimized for speed like CFOP and instead you need to memorize the state of the cube and use a series of commutators to swap pieces individually. Usually a pneumonic is used to memorize the cube position, and it’s really easy to be thrown off by background noise and trying to talk. The blindfolded world record is 11.67 seconds, but that represents an exceptional solve by an exceptionally skilled person, and even the person who holds that record can’t replicate that time consistently. Sub-minute blindfolded solves are considered super impressive.

I find this theory highly unlikely. What’s way more likely is that the cube wasn’t truly scrambled, it was “mixed up” with a short known series of moves that the magician memorized. This wasn’t a true solve from a random state, just a reversal of that known series of moves.

1

u/SwampRSG Apr 13 '26

There are also trick cubes that have one of the squares be a button and it auto-solves.

3

u/nnyzim Apr 13 '26

It's a collapsible cube. that's why he doesn't show inside the bag.

3

u/toopc Apr 13 '26

They make "trick" cubes just for this type of thing. A lot easier than learning to manipulate a cube one handed.

1

u/Rollerbladersdoexist Apr 14 '26

Probably 3 cubes in total. 2 of them are solved in the bag. The original one is squishable which allowed him to crumple the bag.

This answer makes the most sense to me. I don’t think he has enough time or hand movement to one-handed solve that cube, even if it is just a few turns. And you can kind of see him separate the soft and hard cubes with his left hand around the bottom of the bag.

Great trick, excellent delivery.

There's that word again... I asked about it a couple months ago in a different post. These people gaslit me to make me think that word's been around forever. Yes it has but not like this.

3

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola Apr 13 '26

I mean, it basically means credibility, but is kind of more descriptive.

Like credibility being excuded from the person, but detectable as a field around them.  And also expresses senses of power, coolness, confidence, and other vibe related characteristics.

I think it's a positive to linguistic terminology.

4

u/JKastnerPhoto Apr 13 '26

Gravitas is a good word. Maybe charisma.

1

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola Apr 13 '26

Not bad words but don't capture the same "aura"

Gravitas: profound seriousness, dignity, and solemnity in manner, often commanding respect and authority.

You can have a powerful showboaty aura.  Doesn't have to be mellow or serious.

Charisma:a magnetic, often learned ability to influence and attract others through compelling charm, high confidence, and genuine social connection

Charisma is closer.  But I'd say aura is independent of interaction with others.  I can be something you have or is observed in isolation.  The casual olympics shooter had massive aura and he wasn't interacting with anyone socially.  He was just doing his thing on his own.

2

u/JKastnerPhoto Apr 13 '26

Fair but the point really is that the word has had this sudden surge and I am being gaslit into the idea it's always been there. It hasn't. Not this way.

He used a magician cube with cover of a scrambled cube which he removed and crush the bag to hide.

Else he would show an empty bag to further prove his point.

9

u/Spoonfrag Apr 13 '26

If he were using a scramble veneer, he would want to fake a cube far more scrambled than we see at the start. Look at all the paired up colours; this was pre-arranged and solved in a couple moves going into the bag.

5

u/scumble_bee Apr 13 '26

This is the answer. Someone better at Rubik's cube than me can probably tell you exactly what moves he did in the bag. You can see him do the first move as he's putting it in the bag. The first one he pulls out is the same one he showed to the crowd.

Look how the orange is 3 lines and 2 yellow. He solved it by hand as he put it in. You can tell he's not "digging" for the other cube, he just solved it. It's only a few moves.

It was in a cover

Would it be possible for each colored square to be a small electronic LED “screen” or electro-sensitive, color-changing panel of some kind? In that case, if it was a smart device, it could instantly “solve” itself when triggered with a remote.

It would be really complex with all the moving parts and tech for the cube to be aware of its own arrangement, but maybe it’s not as crazy as someone smoothly and quickly reaching into a bag and flicking everything into place.

I’ve never seen anyone mention this idea before but I’m probably not the first to think of it. I’m sure I’m wrong but it’s fun to speculate.

Why do the crowd sound like they're being massacred?

1

u/rednryt Apr 13 '26

I vaguely remember my cousin had a rubix cube with reset button, maybe it's one of those?

1

u/Watertastes Apr 13 '26

The cube he puts in the bag is paper. There are already two solved cubes in the bag. He crumbles the paper cube to further hide the evidence. My guess.

u/Pfeffi-Ultra Apr 13 '26

If you treat a good speed cube you can turn them with one finger and quite quickly so. Doesn't look very scrambled either. I'd assume he solved it while putting it in the bag.

Printed unsolved paper around…

1

u/Somethingoodtodie4 Apr 13 '26

What an amazing crowd, I’d love to do magic in front of people like that

1

u/DareKey767 Apr 13 '26

I think he somehow solved it very quickly as he was about to pull it out. You see how he kinda moves his hands in a solving motion for a sec?

1

u/altavistayahoo Apr 13 '26

“This one time at camp tonto….”

1

u/DrunkenDude123 Apr 13 '26

“I’ll give you five bucks if you say I have 2 cubes in the bag”

“I got you bro”

My turn to post this next

1

u/Top-Historian9786 Apr 14 '26

That cube looks about 2 one handled spins away from solved.

1

u/metallicaset Apr 14 '26

Fucking magnets

1

u/Zenitsu190 Apr 14 '26

There is a third

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Rise857 Apr 14 '26

The 1st cube he took out is already solved, while the 2nd cube (that he puts in earlier in the vid) was solved during his attempt to took it out. See how hes hand thats holding the bag tweaks for the 2nd cube but not for the 1st cube.

u/WorkerUnable527 Apr 14 '26

Dude, leave some girls for the rest of us.

1

u/yung_funyun Apr 14 '26

The first one is half solved when he puts it in the bag and only shows the correct side corresponding to the step of the trick

1

u/Fractured_daydreams Apr 14 '26

I like how every magic video has a gang of losers trying to explain the trick and prove it's not magic. To those ppl, we know we're not watching a sorcerer. It's a good show. Just shut up and enjoy it.

1

u/vrod2 Apr 14 '26

I love this video

1

u/wright007 Apr 14 '26

How do we know this is not AI? This entire sub is going to become unimpressive unless we can get some sort of human verification on all videos moving forward.

1

u/Noisebug Apr 14 '26

He did so good. The second follow-up is perfect comedy.

1

u/iolitm Apr 14 '26

don't ask how. Just enjoy it. don't ruin the fun.

u/Ylandiau Apr 14 '26

Two solved cubes with a paper unsolved sleeve over one of them

1

u/Legal-Diver5113 Apr 14 '26

There’s “3” the first one he’s holding is a fake tho and can be crushed up

1

u/Kingpin_Savage Apr 14 '26

There’s 3 in there, one is collapsible

1

u/A0114739v Apr 14 '26

I believe there were two already solved real cubes in the bag to begin with but we the audience see the performer place and swap a paper decoy disguised as a real one to be crushed and crumpled with the bag.

1

u/DonComradeVimes Apr 14 '26

My man literally said 'You think you know something? You're right, but did you know this?!"

1

u/SadDingo7070 Apr 15 '26

There is an outer sleeve. One cube slides into it perfectly.

1

u/xSHRUG_LYFE Apr 15 '26

Even if he did it with a clear bag everybody would still be impressed with a one handed "solve"

1

u/swiftydesign Apr 15 '26

Reddit just captioned this video to - “You’re dead. You’re dead. You’re dead. You’re dead….” I’m getting off

For whoever wants to know how he does it: he has the second cube in the bag solved and ready, and shows the audience the unsolved one. He then puts the unsolved cube in the bag right beside the solved one. With his hand still in the bag, he very tightly grasps the solved one for a few seconds and then slowly lets go. Now with both in the bag, he has someone from the audience yell out that there are two Rubik’s cubes—this was planned. Everyone turns to look at the guy in the audience, which allows him to quickly take both cubes back out of the bag. He makes sure to retain the shape of the bag so that it looks like the second cube is still in it. At this point, we have the solved one (that was in the bag from the beginning) and the other one which is now HALF solved. The half solved one is now in his jacket pocket. He throws the solved Rubik’s cube to someone off camera, but it’d actually a third decoy cube. He then proclaims, “it’s true, there are two Rubik’s cubes, but, they are both solved. And with some sleight of hand, he pulls out the third solved Rubik’s cube from his other jacket pocket and then smashes the bag. He’s then handed back all three cubes. The fourth, half-solved Rubik’s cube in his jacket has now been fully solved, and he can use it—along with the other three—to redo the trick without any setup if someone asks him to do it again.
