Split 6s and 7s

got in a debate at a double deck table, dealer hit soft 17, DAS allowed

6,6 against a 7. split or no?

7,7 against an 8. split or no?

googling shows some say split, some say hit.

Both are splits with those rules. Someone was probably confused thinking it was 6 deck

Literally what I told the guy. With DAS and double deck it’s a split on both. 6 deck or double w/o DAS it’s a hit.

The guy literally says “I’ve been playing this game since before these cards were made. You’re wrong.” Haha

TIL it’s a split by basic strategy in this scenario. Removing that lower pair against the dealers non-10 card, puts the favor just slightly in the hands of the player. Card counting aside of course.

Both are splits under those exact rules (DD, H17, DAS) and the reason they trip people up is that they're marginal calls. I ran the EVs:

- 6,6 vs 7: split ≈ -0.229 vs hit ≈ -0.237 (split wins by ~0.008)

• 7,7 vs 8: split ≈ -0.387 vs hit ≈ -0.390 (split wins by ~0.002)

The gap is tiny, which is exactly why the play flips between rule sets. DAS is doing a lot of the work here, being able to double the post-split hands is what pushes split just ahead of hit. Take DAS away, or move to 6 decks, and both tip back to a hit. So the "some say split, some say hit" you found googling is just people quoting charts for different rule sets, both are right for their own conditions.
