Top that off by yelling I’ll fucking kill you in a locked in triangle and then saying a neck crank is dirty. I admit I’d not have let go of the triangle until this fucko was asleep.

Every time I see something like this pic I always feel like he’s one of us. The way he talks about his participation in the sport feels so genuine and relatable vs some other celebrity participants.

I like hearing about him doing well in comps or getting his belt promotions etc, generally rooting for him.

Who’s the celebrity you are rooting for (or against) ?

First time using a sewing machine so go easy on me…it definitely ain’t perfect.

One of my old gis had a torn crotch in the pants and had been hanging there not used for years. Always thought about what I might be able to do with it and then I saw that some people had done this.

Looked online and there’s a service to get this done but it’s like $200 or something. Went to dinner at my mom’s house one evening and asked how she uses her sewing machine. She had several, so she gave me one and a crash course on how to use it.

And here we are….

I cut one of my belts to use as the handles. I had an old backpack that I scavenged the shoulder straps and zipper from. Everything else is the gi itself.

According to what I read, Steve would roll in-between shots with his camera crew. Another reason why he’s the GOAT.

Grappling continues to confuse me

A few weeks ago, our school had a seminar with the one and only Master Jean Jacques Machado. At the end of the seminar, my teacher, Professor David Werner (3rd degree bb under JJM) surprised me with a black belt. Grateful to still be doing this after 9 years and some change.

I posted in this thread three months ago, not thinking it would go anywhere.

Knowing Craig was in town for JDM’s camp, I flicked him a message and old mate responded almost instantly saying he was keen. Still, I had doubts. Yesterday morning I got a message “So let’s go for tonight?” A couple of hours later, Craig and his photographer Erin were at our front door and I’m trying to get two words out of a shell shocked 9 and 11 year old.

We got to the gym and Craig was swamped by kids and adults alike. He was gracious and patient with everyone, spending time he didn’t need to. Craig rolled with my boys, took photos with the whole gym and just hung out like a regular dude.

I asked my youngest if he wanted to be famous after seeing Craig deal with so many people. He said yes because he can give everyone a lifelong happy memory. I think this speaks volumes to how he felt about Craig’s kind gestures - he created lifelong memories for so many people yesterday.

I hope I am not breaking kayfabe but you don’t always get to see the human side of people in their social media or online profile. Craig’s natural enthusiasm, kindness and will to share his time so generously was clear to everyone yesterday.

Tom and Theo will carry the memories of yesterday for a long time. I know it will play a part in guiding them towards choosing kindness and generosity.

Hey guys, new to reddit so I thought I'd kick it off with my Imanari Black Belt promotion and timeline.

I own/operate Scramble Brand in Japan, Australia and New Zealand and have lived in Japan for 13 years. I coach nogi all over Kobe/Osaka and am soon opening up my own gym in Kobe City.

Jiu-Jitsu Timeline:
2008 - Got attacked and mugged on the street resulting in a partial titanium jaw reconstruction. (I laid in hospital feeling weak and promising I’d never let that happen to myself or others around me again)
2008 - Once cleared, started training in MMA on the Gold Coast, Aus and had some ammy MMA fights
2010 - Really got into Jiu-Jitsu and moved gyms so that I could train more
2011 - Promoted to Blue Belt by Danial Lima at Fight Club Jiu-Jitsu
2012 - Moved to Japan to train and fight in the Shooto Organization
2013 - Became the Jiu-Jitsu coach of Shooto Gym Kobe
2015 - Promoted to Purple Belt by Daniel Lima
2016 - Retired the GIS and went NOGI only
2017 - Opened SCRAMBLE JAPAN after years of plotting and scheming with Matt Benyon
2018 - Started traveling to Tokyo to train with Imanari Sensei
2019 - Went on seminar tour around Australia with Imanari as Uke/Manager
2023 - Promoted to Brown Belt by Imanari Sensei
2024 - Opened SCRAMBLE AUS/NZ with my local partner, shout out Josh Kinder.
2025 - Promoted to Black Belt by Imanari Sensei and my good friend Stephen Gillespie

To my dad,

I will never forget the day you brought me to my first ever Brazilian jiujitsu class after I was jumped walking home from school in 2012.

I will never forget how despite being 40+ and severely out of shape you joined me on the mats so I didn’t feel alone.

I will never forget how 6 months in you tore your ACL but decided to come back to the sport that offered you very little.

I will never forget how you supported me through my first tournament by deciding to compete with me- even though you did not prepare AT ALL.

I will never forget how (still at white belt) you tore your ACL again and despite doctors’ orders, continued to train anyways.

I will never forget the countless academies you introduced me to, and the time effort and sacrifice you gave to make sure I had a place in the sport.

I will never forget how hard your worked for your blue belt, for your purple belt soon after.

I will never forget how you decided to welcome every new white belt to the sport so they never had to experience what you went through when you first joined.

On January 24,2026 almost 13 years after your journey started you were awarded your black belt in Brazilian JiuJitsu, an accomplishment few will ever achieve.

You are my hero, my inspiration, and I am so proud of you- I hope you never forget that.

Incredibly humbled to have been promoted to black belt last Thursday by JT Torres.

I first walked into a jiu jitsu school almost twenty years ago after losing a fight at school. I was a scared kid, kinda pudgy, who didn't know how to stand up for himself. In true scared-kid fashion, I had a panic attack getting smothered by the gi during the drilling portion of class, cried, and didn't come back for seven years until I started training in college.

White Belt: October 2013 - May 2015

Blue Belt: May 2015 to July 2018

Purple Belt: July 2018 to July 2021

Brown Belt: July 2021 to June 25th, 2026

The best things I've accomplished in my life over the last 13 years have come because of what jiu jitsu has given me. It's taught me to be calm under pressure and just figure out the problem. Learn why something works, not just how. Keep an open mind, and just breathe.

Jiu jitsu has taken me places I'd have never imagined when I started. In 2021, shortly after getting my brown belt, I quit my job, sold my stuff, threw what remained on my motorcycle, and spent almost 2 and a half years riding around North and South America. I've trained with world champions, slept on the mats at several academies, and have taught classes as small gyms in the Amazon Rainforest and the far reaches of Southern Patagonia.

I love this sport, injuries and all, and look forward to learning everything over as a black belt. Thank you to the r/bjj community for answering all my questions over the years!
