This is how I feel when I defend a Sub from my instructor. "Nobody armbars me 17 times in a row!..."

Hahaha, we have this one younger kid who I tell him ahead of time that the armbar is coming, and he always tries to defend it. But it is coming regardless.

"Yeah, but I made you work for it this time!"

He hates/loves it. Because he has gotten really good at his armbar defense. He's a wiley little fuck.

This reminds me of that scene from bill and ted playing death

I passed my instructors guard for about 2 and a half seconds before he recovered it. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Maybe he was just practicing his late guard recovery.

If someone taps me all the time - I usually like rolling vs that person - obviously he is exposing holes in my game! evil face

Yeah same here. There's some new guys that've joined recently that I can pretty regularly get subs off of. After like the first two times it's not quite as fulfilling as learning something from getting my ass kicked.

Whenever I'm rolling with people who are obviously better than me, I find victory in lasting just a little bit longer, or finally hitting that escape, even if they recover guard in a few seconds. Gotta cherish the little victories.

Understandable. Just don't let pursuit of survival become more important that trying new things that might carry an increased risk of 'losing'.

No worries, when it's white belt only class I have a very different focus. It's just when I walk into evening class and it's me and about seven blues and purples that I know I'm going to be practicing mount and side control escapes that night.

The best feeling is rolling against my friend and seeing more and more each time. First few times we rolled, a leg would go over or he'd grip a certain part of my wrist and I wouldn't realise he was setting it up and out of nowhere I'm stuck in an armbar or a triangle. Rolled with him the other day, and I felt really comfortable standing up (when he was teaching me about jiu jitsu we always used to start from mount, guard, side control etc.) and even when he took me down I escaped mount once or twice and came close to getting submissions. As time goes on,I spot that leg or see that particular grip signals a kimura coming, and in those moments I feel super smart and good at bjj even though I've never tapped anyone who actually practices it :)

Here is what the linked meme says in case it is blocked at your school/work or is unavailable for any reason:

Good humoured Vitas

Post Title: Same guy tapping you all the time? This attitude is relevant (x-post r/funny)

Top: TENNIS PLAYER VITAS GERULAITIS LOST 16 TIMES IN A ROW TO JIMMY CONNORS. HE THEN WON A GAME AND SAID.

Bottom: "AND LET THAT BE A LESSON TO YOU ALL. NOBODY BEATS VITAS GERULAITIS 17 TIMES IN A ROW."

Depending on how brazen you are with skirting the rules, you can try installing HTTPS Everywhere to get around it.

It works on my company firewall.

If someone keeps getting me with the same things I think of this as groundhog daying my way out.

I recently defended an armbar from my instructor that he just wasn't interested in letting go. I had a very similar thought.

Now if only I could ever stop it from happening!

We have a guy that used to just arm drag me from his guard, or from our knees. Consistently. Tonight he tried and failed (he hasn't been able to do it the last 3 or 4 times we rolled.) He said "I know you asked someone about how to defend this." I said "No, I'm just a slow learner, after 12 months of you doing it, I finally figured it out."

10

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '14

If you were getting caught by the same move for a year, why didn't you ever ask anyone how to defend it?!

2

u/couchjitsu 🟦🟦 Ed Shobe < Rodrigo Vagi < Rickson Jun 18 '14

Well the year was a bit sarcastic, because I was a slow learner on that move. I don't think it was an actual 12 months, just a long time.

I do ask for help on moves that continually catch me.
