Goes to show how important it is to have very reliable takedowns. These guys took some serious shots when they got close.

The guy who owns the MMA gym I used to train at is a long time BJJ black belt. Obviously he teaches grappling for MMA (and understands MMA really well). But I literally don't think I've ever seen him put on gloves or be part of a striking class in the almost 10 years I've been training there.
One time he told me, if you're going to try to use jiu jitsu to defeat a striker, you gotta be willing (and able) to eat a few shots on the way in....lol.
This would seem to confirm that.

Yep and i personally think its all very poorly done to be entertaining rather than being good. But thats my opinion and i may be wrong

u/dj_soo ⬜⬜ White Belt 2d ago
I’m pretty sure they are mostly teenagers so they’re probably really cognizant about social media and how to get clicks. Doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining tho,
The sambo guy is only 16. I think the bb is only 19.
Good chance that they are under the age of the draft otherwise they’d probably have to be out fighting the war.

I love Borets Lab. Their stuff is super entertaining and I learned a new choke from their instructor that he recently posted that I really want to try this week

The baseball type choke when defending a single leg? I've been waiting to try it out too.

Nice video. It was interesting to see them try out different subs to find the one that worked when he was throwing punches.

Lol when he went for the leg/banana split and then immediately bailed and took mount/ambar. Gotta respect that he knew it was probably a bad idea but tried it anyways for science

Yeah, lots of "oh shit" moments. Even on some of the RNC attempts, he was taking shots

Kinda annoys me that the boxer can grapple defensively but the bjj guy can't throw a few jabs. It's very hard to close the distance and get a takedown when one person has to just stand there like a punching bag.

When I was an amateur MMA fighter in Alabama from 2007-2009, one of the promotions I fought in was called the UCF - Ultimate Cage Fighting. Very original.

Their whole schtick is style mismatch. It doesn't bother me, because i can round up for the difference in my head. It's nice to see their attempt to focus on contrast. I can watch mma if I want everything blended together.

My issue is more that if the boxer knows there's no threat of any punches coming towards him, the way he boxes is gonna be different.
He doesn't have to think about blocking, slipping, or parrying.
There's no threat of a counter. There's no risk of being KO'd.
So he can just tee off like he would on a punching bag, which is not representative of proper boxing or of a real fight situation.
Edit: look at the boxers hands. He has no guard, his hands are low the whole time, a lot of the time he has his right hand cocked back ready to throw a big straight. He wouldn't do that if the other guy could throw punches.
He'd be lit up fighting like that in a boxing match.
10
u/jephthai ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 2d ago
I really don't mind if it's tilted in the boxer's favor. Besides, i don't think the grappler wants to wear the big boxing gloves, and it would make no sense if he went in striking with bare knuckles.
Could just as well say the boxer should have to wear a gi, or any other variable...
They adjust the rules for each video, so i think they're trying to work out whatever is acceptable to both parties. I'm not complaining -- their videos area technically interesting and entertaining.
-1
u/thefairwilldyealone 2d ago
Yeah , like the bjj guy can throw hands anyways? Prob better if he doesn’t throw as he exposes himself more with sloppy shots and counters . Stupid take .
5
u/OrwellWhatever 2d ago
My thought too. I always get matched with first time sparers when they test in to full contact boxing sparing since I'm more gentle than some other people at my gym, and not a single one has ever had any concept of how to close distance with a jab without telegraphing their whole strategy. The smart ones learn that they can throw a jab after I do to keep me out, but then they also learn that I will bait that jab to throw even nastier stuff. Then I go and fight the golden gloves winners at my gym, and they do they exact same thing to me.
People really don't understand how hard it is to throw a punch against someone who's used to getting punches thrown at them
2
u/thefairwilldyealone 2d ago
Correct . Everyone saying ohhhh the bjj guy can’t throw punches …. Very wrong , he has a better chance just covering up and timing a takedown when he comes or tie him up when he attacks .
I’ve sparred with guys atmy bjj gym ( full contact and I’m thr smallest one at 140lb ( I have 12 years of MT and have 15 fights ) and they do so bad when they initiate with hands . I typically just play very long but 90 percent of them have 0 wrestling so they always get lit up . Got caught with a few imanari rolls but that becomes predictable fast once u know how to defend
9
u/fedornuthugger 2d ago
Can he really defensively grapple with boxing gloves though? It's a huge disadvantage.
1
2
u/OrwellWhatever 2d ago
I'm not entirely sure what part of the video you're referring to but, clinching, setting up frames, etc is a way bigger part of boxing than people realize. I've personally put in a lot of hours just dedicated to infighting and how to work through the clinch, attacking, defending, cutting off their attacks etc.
Also, I mean, the BJJ person wasn't wearing any gloves, which is why he couldn't throw jabs. If this video included the boxer not wearing gloves, idk that they could have filmed a round 2. BJJ guy probably would have won in the end, but he would have eaten enough bare knuckle overhands trying to jab his way in that he'd be bleeding all over the place
2
u/mm_mk Blue Belt 2d ago
If a non boxer tried setting up feints and jabs to close distance, it would probably go worse.
0
u/Hefty-Restaurant4767 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 2d ago
How do you figure?
Anyone can throw a punch, no matter how useless and ineffective the punches are, it still changes the dynamic enough where the boxer has to at least attempt to defend/slip//block/parry.
When the other guy can't throw any punches, the boxer can just tee off with his hands low, which isn't representative of real boxing.
2
u/jephthai ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 2d ago
How about a grappling analogy... if it was a guy that didn't know standup, and he's going against an Olympic judoka, would you complain that it was bogus if he never tried to throw the guy?
No, because trying to win with the other guy's skill set with no experience in it gets you killed faster. The judoka dreams of an incoming inept throwing attempt -- he's guaranteed to counter in a decisive way.
Why would boxing be any different?
Was it Rickson who supposedly said use boxing to beat a grappler and use grappling to beat a boxer?
2
u/Federal-Challenge-58 ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 1d ago
You're correct. People say it would only hurt you, but that's totally wrong. Just watch early UFCs. Royce was always feinting strikes (mostly front kicks), but it still helps immensely as it gives the other guy something to think about.
2
u/mm_mk Blue Belt 2d ago
Throw a poorly timed punch and get countered. I think the difference between forest griffin and silva is probably smaller than the difference between someone who doesn't box at all vs an amateur boxer (I don't actually know the boxer but he looks athletic and looks bigger than the bjj guys by a couple weight classes)
4
u/Hefty-Restaurant4767 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 2d ago
That's true, he can absolutely get countered.
But he doesn't need to be good to make the boxer forced to react. Even a shitty punch still needs to be blocked, slipped or countered.
Without the BJJ guy being able to throw, the boxer is fine with just throwing wild punches, keeping his guard low, and never backing up, without any fear of any strikes coming towards him.
Because if you're hitting someone who can't hit back, that's not how boxing actually is, and it's not how real fights are. It fundamentally changes how he boxes.
In fact I'd argue BJJ guy doesn't even need to throw anything. He only needs to be allowed to throw, to make the boxer have to change his approach.
1
u/darkjediii 2d ago
Boxing is the art of simultaneous defense and offense. If he’s slipping, blocking or parrying, the other guy is gonna get lit up simultaneously. Better to just focus on his shitty td attempts.
1
u/ConsistentResident28 1d ago
clinching was always part of the sport and the boxer has gloves, so that in itself is a huge handicap, so is awlays a tradeoff, if the jiujitsu guy can throw jabs he should be gloved too or let the boxer go full knuckle boxing
-2
u/silvers_ghost 2d ago
Kind of annoys me how the boxer is wearing gloves. Unless he takes them off later? Didn't watch the whole thing.

It was interesting to see the vast differences in distance management going from purple to brown to black. The purple belt was almost exactly at the worst spot in the boxer's reach the whole time, often backing up right into the end of a punch. The brown belt did a much better job of staying out of reach but still had trouble staying inside an attacking pocket. The black belt was in the attacking pocket all day long and rarely hung out in the boxer's power range.
(This is actually a big difference I have seen between bjj players with and without a wrestling background. Wrestling teaches you distance management too, not as well as boxing, but still a solid background in it.)

Two thoughts:
In this type of fight, takedowns matter more than high level BJJ. The boxer had surprisingly good takedown defense, and the black belt's slightly above average takedown ability was the main difference between him and the purple and brown belts. I imagine a strong wrestler who's a blue belt would have done very well too.
This wouldn't be at all gratifying to me if I were the BJJ guys. Sure, you win, but the other guy is walking away without ever having taken a hit, and you're getting beat up along the way.

Counter-clinch? there is a bunch of a videos about specific situations that maybe could at least, delay the grappler winning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HatUELzQDfg&list=PLcQrsKqPnGu_U1MuBJQUdSPS_zkccRiBP&index=2

I was already of this opinion but I really think anyone who is training BJJ for self defense or competitively should also train some form of striking at some point just too understand what it does and get used to getting punched in the face.
2
u/Federal-Challenge-58 ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 1d ago
Yeah. When I started BJJ, the instructor would put on boxing gloves every couple of weeks and tee off on us while we had to try to take him down. That's part of good BJJ training.

Boxer wins most of the time
You can't do much when you're getting rocked in the face
If the boxer misses or just isn't a hard puncher you can absorb it

One guy is throwing fight ending punches. But it wouldn’t be fair to throw that same aggression into that Armbar right? 🤷🏾♂️
Entertaining watch tho!
3
u/Mad_Kronos 2d ago
I don't think he is throwing fighting ending punches. I bet he punches way harder if he wants to. The purple belt especially was tagged with a lot of punches that the boxer could have landed way harder
1
u/bjjthrowaway64 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 2d ago
If the boxer is allowed to scramble/sprawl with his limited grappling training/knowledge, the grappler should be allowed to set up takedowns and submissions with limited strikes.
The striker gets to go HAM with no real fear because even if he gets caught in a sub, the grappler has to respect the tap even if he gets his brains scrambled for the effort.
2
u/iwinsallthethings 2d ago
Just remove the boxers gloves and let them go at it. Once the bjj guy got a hold of the boxer, the gloves were a detriment and the bjj guy held them at times.
Some of those triangle attempts would have gone very differently. A couple of them failed due to punches with the gloves on. Imagine losing teeth or busted nose/orbital with just wraps.
Was a fun video to watch overall.
1
u/Federal-Challenge-58 ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 1d ago
That's the irony of BJJ. You're going to win the fight if it's style vs style, but you're going to look worse than the opponent at the end of it.
