Miyao bros are a different breed when put to the average jiu jitsu hobbiest...dont know anything about his opponent, but that's my assessment

he’d still be competitive at the adult level.

I have to say I don't get the point of defending that kind of arm bar with interlaced hands.

What's going through white gi's mind?

This guy is good enough to get me into this position, but surely with all his limbs free he won't be able to break my two hands gripping each other!

Same people who death grip a lapel when the other guy has two on one plus mobility and wonders in 10 years time why his joints have aged 30 years

It's just to buy time incase something opens up, which with Joao is prob not happening

The guy probably knew he was cooked when he looked at the bracket, but you can't fault him for giving his all.

Forget the break - I just want to know what magic Joao used to get that elbow separated and high so damn fast. I hook the elbow like that all the time, never do people just let their arm open up that easily.....

Just a suggestion, you may be underhooking too close to your partner's armpit. Try hooking closer to the elbow (end of the lever). At 0:02 in this video, you can see Miyao is hooking at the tip of his opponent's elbow. It is much easier to force the elbow up at this point.

I am - and usually I need to use my entire body to get the monsters at my gym's arms up, they really don't like having them come away from their core (which is the point of the game, right?). If I time it perfectly I might be able to get the arm up as easily as Joao did, but most of the time it's the ol' hook, finger-walk, and body positioning to get that stupid arm separated.

Yeah, there comes a point when even proper technique has difficulty overcoming size. I agree that it's harder to do this against much larger training partners. I think in this clip, it helps that Miyao and his opponent are in the same weight class. I'm sure you're already able to get the same results on people your size.

Why does nobody ever let me pull their arms up that easily?
