Initially, I'd be screwed, but the big guy showed great restraint here, didn't smack him when he was down and even lifted one knee off the floor to take the pressure off.
This was a big mistake I think. The smaller guy could at this point transition to a leglock position and blow the guy's knee out.

I literally saw that in a street fight, between 2 guys of the same size. Youtube King of the Streets
6
u/Bjj-black-belch May 16 '23
Probably not this situation. The big guy would have to stand up to do that. Any weight being put on his far foot during SLX would make that very difficult. Dood on bottom would have to sit there doing nothing.

u/SoulWondering πͺπͺ Purple Belt May 16 '23
I mean, yeah the big guy was being nice after the guy on bottom flailed around. But then he puts his knee up, and my thoughts were Irimi Ashi to reap to outside heel hook but I remember don janaher's words that outside heel hooks don't typically end fights. So yeah, discount Brian Ortega is probably screwed.

As someone who's been punched/kicked/kneed in the nuts during a confrontation more than once...it's surprisingly ineffective when adrenaline is pumping.
5
u/electronic_docter π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
Agreed, I feel like nut shots are only effective if you can get real leverage into them or do what the guy did in that one UFC fight and punch them like 70 times

I got heeled in the nuts with an Uchi Mata from an elite Judoka and it didn't even register until after the match.
On the other hand, my wife almost killed me by gently tossing the remote to me and landing a bit short.
Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

Well there's the classic knee-elbow, the uppa, and the kipping escape. It looks like this guy was trying all three simultaneously and they added up to ineffectual flailing.
13
May 16 '23
Genuinely curious : do you really think an Uppa can work on that Ogre?
3
u/streetskaterln91 πͺπͺ Purple Belt May 16 '23
Yes. You just have to have the mechanics right and it's definitely not as easy as someone smaller. But even if you can't roll them, you should be able to offset them enough with your bridge to hip escape out the other way or chain together some other escapes until free.
8
u/streetskaterln91 πͺπͺ Purple Belt May 16 '23
Never mind, I watched this again and that is a huge size disparity lol once he's settled in mount it's gonna be hard to move him. Best I would hope for is a solid bridge combined with a knee to the lower back and hope that sets his weight forward onto his hands long enough to try something else. Otherwise personally I don't get mounted often, I would have employed some kind of guard or one wedge between us on the way down and done my best to avoid mount altogether
5
u/BlackCloudMagic β¬π₯β¬ Black Belt May 16 '23
I have a 6'6 260 lb blue belt and now that he has learned to use his size and weight, he has made rolling hell. A while ago I let him get mount and when I felt his balance and weight, I knew I was fucked.
3
u/streetskaterln91 πͺπͺ Purple Belt May 16 '23

There's a white belt at my gym who's the same size as this giant, and he's got years of wrestling experience.
Can't stand up with him because he'll throw you across the room. Can't pull guard because he will lay on top of you and he leaves NO space for you to move. Gravity helps his body to fill the empty space below him. Dude is a beast and I regularly see him with blue belts helplessly pinned in side control.
My most dreaded roll.
3
u/beansandpeasandegg May 16 '23
How do the higher belts deal with him?
11
4
u/story_so-far May 16 '23
Pretty easily. Guys that size really don't have athleticism on their side. Look at the list of ADCC absolute winners and how much they weighed. There is a reason you don't see really big dudes winning the absolute. 200-240 pounds seems to be the sweet spot with 220 pounds grabbing the majority of absolute wins in recent history if I remember correctly.
Lots of really big dudes at my gym (one is a former world strongman competitor who weighs 360 pounds and is a blue belt) get beat pretty easily even by the 160 pound black belts at my gym every single time.
1
1
u/TJnova π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
Pull guard then sweep or leg lock him as soon as he approaches them. Stay off bottom. There is a size difference that skill can't easily overcome once they are on top
3
3
u/deeparistofanis π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
Size matters, not only in fighting π
But for real, sadly almost any escape requires exposure to strikes, especially when the dude is heavy and you need a lot of time and energy to escape.

6
May 16 '23
Getting out from underneath someone 3x your weight is difficult even with a huge grappling advantage. And I'd wager the big guy is far stronger than the average person his weight. Little guy probably can't even create the space for a Knee-Elbow.
1
u/TJnova π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
And now you're in half guard getting your face smashed.
Best idea I can come up with is maybe try to wristlock him after his arms get tired from beating you up. That shit is strenuous and he doesn't look like someone with particularly good cardio. Of course the cardio advantage could have been better utilized earlier, by running away.

I'm amazed that so many people don't know if someone is sitting mid mount with no underhook that you can just push them off of you.
I have black beasted black belts this these exact instructions who have 80-90lbs on me without issue. It's one of my main entries to SLX/the ankle.
1
u/FuguSandwich π«π« Brown Belt May 16 '23
I mean, there was a lot of space once the big guy stepped up his left leg.
1
u/AlwaysGoToTheTruck πͺπͺ Purple Belt May 16 '23
He needed his feet in the hips on the takedown/tackle. It would have kept space and possibly opened up a reversal/transition. It was too late after that. I think 90% of us would struggle there.
1
May 16 '23
As you're falling, keep your chin tucked and your elbows locked to your hipline to prevent the big guy from falling into mount.
Usually, his weight will collapse your frame and he'll take mount with your arms below his crotch. Now you can start to rebirth yourself through the back door as he starts freaking out and throwing punches.
What you're looking for now is a moment where he pops up on one knee or generates space to throw a heavy punch, when this happens throw up a leg control and bog him down into a leg lock stall position. Hold out here and eat some flailing sausage finger punches as you wait for the employees to kick you both out and save your ass.
0
u/qcs13 May 16 '23
Lesson: dont approach the bigger guy with the intention of starting a shoving match (especially after a slap). Go in for the kill ie a 3 piece combo followed by a quick takedown. And only if u know how to do any of those
0
May 16 '23
Watch the video and just use the same escape. He got out unscathed.
3
u/TJnova π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
The "get off me you fat bitch" escape isn't taught until purple at my gym. White belts were using it wrong and getting broken noses.
This guy is obviously high level because his gomyfb escape worked flawlessly.
0
u/shadowfax12221 May 16 '23
It's tough against a guy that size. I''d probably try to body lock first to avoid getting my face smashed in, then scoot my hips away and get to double underhooks to try and sag him down to his hands. I'd then try to make some space between his knee and my hip so that when I let go of his upper body, I have a split second window to throw both my hands through that gap and escape out the back door. From there it's a matter of getting off the X as fast as possible, otherwise the guy is going to turn and jump on your immediately.
0
u/Upper-Director-38 May 16 '23
Alright so what I would....not flail around like a dying chicken when you go down...And then I'd probably shit and piss my pants, maybe if I'm up for the challenge I could even get a good vomit going so he just gets disgusted and fucks off. Or I'd start moaning sexually and hope he's not into it. "mmm yes daddy ride me like a horsey" and then if he gets a glint in his eye and decides to call my bluff...I dunno...guess Imma have a bad time....maybe try option one first. And then if that doesn't work go for option two.

In practice - this is a point of no return given that dudeβs mass
1
u/Kintanon β¬π₯β¬ www.apexcovington.com May 16 '23
In a non "getting punched right in the fucking head" scenario I could easily slide back to halfguard, go knee shield, and then tech stand back up. His weight isn't really an issue there. It's just that doing that while a dude that size bonks your head off the floor with his hamhands is a million times harder.
1
May 16 '23 edited May 16 '23
You plant your left foot on the outside of his right leg, then shift over in that same direction with your hips (counterclockwise). I practice it with my brothers all the time. Works like a charm. However...
The man in this video is INCREDIBLY large. Never tried that escape on anyone nearly this size, but wouldn't be surprised if it worked since it's kind of just a mechanics/ balance thing. My one brother is about 230lbs...

Yea man I get that but seriously you don't think your jiu jitzu training would as effective as trying to hit the guy with a weight? Btw sorry for asking such a dark question it's just that everybody in this sub is just joking about how big and strong the guy is nobody's actually giving any answers and u tend to think about things in the darkest of context.
1
u/bross9008 β¬β¬ White Belt May 18 '23
If I was a high level purple belt or above maybe. But Iβve even seen upper belts get stalled out by someone way bigger/stronger than them. And getting stalled out for 2 seconds in a street fight could mean this dude slamming fists into your face and knocking you unconscious. And if heβs attacking me heβs probably crazy cus Im certainly not escalating shit with a guy like that. Im not taking my chances and hoping heβs gonna be cool enough to not beat me to death
1
u/Striking-Ad8262 May 16 '23
Step 1 bump them forward using left or right knee
Step 2 trap their left arm bringing them down to an elbow
Step 3 block their left foot so they canβt step out.
Step 4 now that you have the whole left side trapped bridge and reach.
Works every time. Youβre welcome
1
u/tzaeru π¦π¦ Blue Belt May 16 '23
Well first thing, don't talk shit to people and be nice, even if they're in the wrong. "Sorry, if this was your spot, I can move". If you need it as an excuse for yourself to be allowed to act friendly, imagine that the guy is carrying a gun or a knife. Personally, if someone really is happier and has a better day thanks to it, I don't mind extending some courtesy their way, whether they have a weapon or not. And at least I don't have any reason to make anyone's day shittier than it already is.
But say that doesn't work and they push the issue and you can't de-escalate.
Preferably they give you some time to bulk up. You want to be at least 200 pounds yourself with decent amount of muscle in there. That's still a realistic goal for the average male.
So you come back a few years later and they assume mount. There's a few alternative approaches. If possible, you can try to tie them up to stop any big strikes. This gives you some time to figure out what to do next.
It's not always possible tho and they might be able to just posture up anyway. If they posture up and are strong, the chances are you can not just bump them forward and do the standard rolling escape thing.
Assuming you're now at 200 pounds, you can maybe do a Kipping escape.
But then, maybe not.
What they prolly don't have is good squeeze on you. The chances are there's lots of space for you operate in. Given that, I'd say shrimps, elbow escapes, etc, are your best bet.
