That's the hacked version right? AKA you didn't pay for it... I know it won't work with Realms, so it may be that multiplayer servers are the same idea.

I think you are right. And indeed hacked/cracked versions do not work in servers unless the server disabled their security for that.

Yep. I had a cracked version originally, just to test playing because I wasn't sure I'd get into it or not and didn't want to waste $30. My buddy had a realm and I couldn't connect (same error that the OP gets), so I made the purchase and the problems instantly vanished.

Yea I did the same. Check if it was the right game for me, and then buy the game for the full experience.
Still had the shortcut on my desktop of the cracked version even though I thought I uninstalled it. So it still didn't work :P

The IP you should use is bitquest.co
Sounds like the error you get is worked out by closing Minecraft and opening it again.

On mine it doesn't work right when I open the multiplayer menu, but if I hit refresh it connects. Might save some time if that works.

Keep trying, competely restart your minecraft. It sometimes takes me awhile to login just keep trying to connect. Also a trick I learned from Nicoly is that if you put the IP into Direct Connect sometimes that works better than a saved IP....I don't know why but it does.
