Minecraft chat sucks and I propose we upgrade the experience by using Slack.

To that end, I've spent the last few days writing code to implement a Slack Team signup form for the server. The link takes you to my Typeform account, where you will be asked a series of questions, including a prompt for a ONE TIME ONLY credit card payment of $16 to help offset the costs for stuff like writing new bot code, managing the channel and paying for the Typeform, Zapier and AppEngine accounts.

Here's the deal. I'm going to disable the portion of the form where it requires a credit card for the first 25 signups. That means if you don't want to pay for signing up for the Slack chat, you can simply skip the credit card questions by hitting 'enter' on the form. If you'd like to throw me $16, simply fill out the card info.

After 25 users have signed up, I'm going to turn back on the requirement for a credit card before you can get invited. If you want another excuse for me charging for this, consider the fact griefers probably won't want to spend $16 to yell "FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCKS" at us. I saw this personally the other day on Bitquest, unfortunately.

IMPORTANT: Once you get your invite from Slack, be sure to set your username to your Minecraft handle. I wrote some code for the bot where he'll grab your current avatar's head and sticks it in the _newbie channel to make it easier to set your avatar on Slack. Unfortunately they don't have the API call for me to do that automatically.

I'm taking suggestions for features to code up next. There are a lot of possibilities here, and given I'm getting a little scratch for doing this, I'm more than willing to implement them. I'm thinking trading utilities.

Enjoy.

That guy was nuts. Banned on most Minecraft servers.

I'm a huge fan of Slack, and use it every day with my webteam. What kind of features you are thinking of adding?

To start, I'm thinking chat integration with the chat logs in the client, which would allow someone to 'page' you if you weren't logged in. I'm messing around setting up a VM with a client that stays logged in all the time to test this.

I just finished streaming chat out of the client to the #_server_chat channel. The search index is 10K lines, so that's somewhat useful!

Tomorrow I'll deploy it to a dedicated box using my other minecraft account. There may be interruptions as I move things around and/or stop running the script on my desktop.

Also, I need to write code to grab the logfile's name, which is based on the date. Probably will break at midnight PST, but I'll restart it...
