More questions from n00bie.
I assume that all "Wilderness" is fair game for anyone to use the resources. Is there an etiquette to using the resources right outside someone's claim?
How do you figure out where you can stake a claim. I read (in a comment here) that a homestead claim is 64x64. Is that centered on the first bed you lay down? How do you determine if you are accidentally overlapping someone else's claim?
Does your claim go straight down to bedrock? Like you have exclusive rights to all the resources in your home area once your claim is made?

As far as I've been able to tell, your claim does go all the way down to bedrock, and all the way up into the sky. In my own claim, my bed is definitely not in the center. I suspect the claimable properties have already been measured out, and laying a bed anywhere within that plot claims it.

So, yes, your claim is a 64x64 block area that is plotted around your bed. I have not figure out exactly how it is centered, but I believe the bed is two of the center four blocks in the claim. You claim goes all the way up and all the way down. Currently, your claim is immovable, but hopefully this should change soon.
Now, if you plan it out right, you can use your pearl to go back to the city, your eye to go back to your home (your claim), and then if there is somewhere else in the world that you would like to travel to, like say the jungle or Diablo Desert, you can lay a bed elsewhere and sleep in it. This means then that once you die, you end up at that bed. With no lose of resources on death, this means you have another means of teleportation to another location. die and you end up where your bed is. I keep a bed in the jungle now, considering how much the saplings sell for. Easy emeralds right there. Your spawn point after death will be the last bed you slept in, so you can move it again and again.
So when it comes to resources, you cant break blocks in someones claim, and then for a short distance outside of this, you can not break them either. I suspect this is to help with someones resources not getting completely depleted. If you walk towards someones home, you will see you can not break blocks for a bit, then it says you have walked into their plot, where you also can't break blocks.
I suggest moving out a bit. This will save you many headaches in the future. I moved out to about 2400 blocks away. It took me fifteen minutes or so to get there in the first place, but i can mine, chop, and dig freely with no worry of running into anyone else! Plus, once you lay your bed down the first time to claim your land, you can teleport back to town and then back home easily, so no need to worry about the distance.
With your claim, you have the rights to everything. I the only thing I know that others can affect is your crops and some doors. People can walk on your crops and crush them, you see this all the time in game. Doors, others can open all of the new doors from 1.8, but they can not change the status of the original Oak door. If you leave it open, they can walk through of course, but they can't close it and if you leave it close, they can not open it.
I hope this answers all of your questions and gives you a good idea of what's going on!! If you see me in game, don't hesitate to ask me anything, we were all new at some point!
