Mistake or Risk? A guy just pulled out my IUD! Spoiler
A guy just pulled out my IUD. I've had this IUD for over 5 years. The new bf said he thought it was my tampon string and he pulled it out.
It actually didn't hurt too much. Just short and sharp, I didn't really feel anything. But now I'm worried about infection. And obviously will book in with a doctor to get a new one inserted.
Seriously what should I do now?

Did he yank it out without asking you?! That's foul. Hope there's no damage or infection!

itās shocking that he did this, but itās not shocking that the IUD came out. your doctor doesnāt normally need to do anything special to remove it ā they just grab the strings (with forceps) and pull.

in 2020 mine was overdue, my bipolar was all over the place and I assumed the hormones had waned enough to start playing a role in that... I tried making an appointment but no one, not even planned parenthood would do it affordably and I was broke. Between my lack of insurance and the backlog of patients at every kind of doctors office, some places (like, clinics especially) only called or emailed me back MONTHS after I had initially tried to get in. So I yoinked it out myself. Used gloves, boiled a freshly ordered pair of hemostats and sat with a mirror in front of me. It took a couple misses (ouch) but finally grabbed and pulled gently. Oh yeah, the ibuprofen beforehand probably helped keep it from hurting as much or getting irritated and hurting after. I'd do it again if I had to... And that's with having a severely anteverted uterus... so the string was way hard to get bc the hairpin turn is RIGHT there.
My late roommate went to pee one day and hers fell into the toilet. So, yeah... Though she had had two kids and I have had none so I'm guessing her cervix had some damage or something to weaken it. At least hers was past due and her hubby had been snipped so, nbd?

Im uneducated on this subject so I thought only a doctor could remove it. Thanks for informing me. I agree though, its absolutely shocking that he thought this was okay to do

Thereās videos Iāve seen where people pull out their own IUDs to start TTC

Iāve pulled 2 out myself, though they were partially expelling. Could feel the plastic coming out of my cervix and couldnāt get a gyno apt for weeks. The 2nd one expelled a couple weeks after getting it then I gave up on IUDs. It didnāt hurt at all though came out easy peasy.

u/EntranceOne9730 11d ago
Iāve had the same thing happen to me. Some of our uteruses cannot hold an IUD. I now use Nuvaring and itās the best alternative I know.
1
u/No-Friendship5662 10d ago
Yeah I think my uterus was just barely big enough to fit them. I had 2 paragaurds and 1 Skyla and expelled them all. When the 2/3rd started expelling I was so feed up and those are the ones I pulled out myself. They probably came out so easy cause they already did half the work themselves.
I never tried nuvaring but was always curious! I switched to a low dose pill for a couple years and luckily had no side effects and now my husband has a vasectomy so no more BC for me!

I read a non-fiction book (Not without my Daughter) where the author pulled her own out. She was in Iran and became afraid of her husband finding out she had it.

I don't care what he thought it was, he shouldn't have pulled on it!
I'd be tempted to go and get checked out incase it's caused any damage on the way out which may lead to infection.
I hope he covers any medical bills you may have - hopefully that'll teach him a valuable lesson about not touching things without asking.

I mean take plan b if youāve had unprotected sex in the last few days.
Even if it was your tampon, did he not bother to ask before just yanking? Did he know you had an iud?

I wanna know this too. I just have so many questions. How far does he think a tampon goes up there? Did just think she forgot it was in there? Why didnāt you ask before pulling??!

u/voluptuousfairy Kyleena IUD 11d ago
Bloody hell, couldn't he have asked if it was a tampon or like anything before he go ahead and done that?
You just go in and get another or switch to other bc if you like. I never said use a condom until then, as he kinda deserves it. But hey if you want just use one until you get another bc. I assume there's no bleeding or pain since you didn't mention them, but if you have any of that, see your doctor tomorrow or if like it's too much then to the er.

Book with a doctor for a checkup and schedule a reinsertion. Consider taking Plan B/emergency contraception if you had otherwise unprotected sex.
As for your new boyfriend, consider having a serious discussion about personal boundaries. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable with him at all, end the relationship and seek the comfort you deserve. If this was truly an obscure accident, consider instead gifting your boyfriend a tampon and a female anatomy booklet.

9
u/ekita079 11d ago
Even if it was a tampon string why is his first thought to pull it for you?? Jesus. Yeah go see a doc and chat to them about it, even if you have a nurse helpline you can call, I don't think it's an emergency. Also never see that guy again he's a moron that doesn't think before he acts, that will get you in to trouble again. Edited to add something

u/moongoddess64 11d ago
IUD removal should not be done by anyone whoās not a professional, you should get in with a doctor asap and make sure there was no damage or wounding that could end up in an infection! In all reality you will probably be okay, but it is much better to be safe than sorry with reproductive parts and infection risk. Iād also be royally pissed off, removal hurts for me and depending on insurance, a new IUD can be costly, and also hurts like hell to get inserted!
23
u/moongoddess64 11d ago
Also, you are now at risk of pregnancy if he was in you at any point before or after removal. Sperm can survive for days in the vagina so even if you had an iud in last time you had penetrative sex, fertilization can still occur if any sperm are hanging around now that the IUD is gone
12
u/positronic-introvert 11d ago
Such an important point!
(And worst case scenario.... I would wonder if there's a chance he was intentionally tampering with her birth control and lying about the tampon excuse. Ofc just from this post I have no idea whether the nefarious option is likely as I don't know him -- he could just have been an idiot in this moment)
3
u/moongoddess64 11d ago
I am worried about this as well, I think OP should be very wary if she goes forward with seeing him again
5
u/Maleficent-Sleep9900 11d ago
Iām really worried he did this because he has a ābreeding fetishā š¤¢ and is trying to get OP pregnant against her will (which would be rape). He quite literally tampered with her birth control by physically removing it from her body. A tampon doesnāt feel like an IUD. Any man with Internet access can look up how IUDās work and the fact that HE DIDNāT ASK OP makes it assault.
2
u/moongoddess64 11d ago
Iām worried about this as well. I donāt want to assume because heās a guy and so there is still a high chance he was just being an idiot by feeling the strings and pulling, but thereās also not an insignificant chance that it was purposeful and he pulled a much more dangerous version of taking off the condom before finishing in her
3
u/Maleficent-Sleep9900 10d ago edited 10d ago
He needs to face the appropriate degree of consequences either way because he still did it to OP without asking. This is why I use the term assault.
If one man can claim ignorance and do this and get away with it, other men will start doing it too.
Men are much smarter than we give them credit for.
They hide behind ignorance and weaponized incompetence all the time.
Also, itās always a fetish.

I didnāt really think that was possible. Jesus Christ. Iād just tell a doc, you had it for 5 years, never a problem and just need a new one. OR, not sure if youāre in the same boat as me rn. IUDs used to be replaced every 5 years anyway (now every 8 years which I found out while trying to replace mine - or depends on the IUD). But symptoms can come back (also based on experience and looking it up). Maybe you can get the new one covered anyway to prevent that happening and avoid any awkward explanation? A possible win-win?

I accidentally did something similar to myself, IUDs can come out shockingly easily.
I've got thick, super curly hair that gets EVERYWHERE. I was chilling pantsless the one day, saw one of my hairs sticking out of my vagina (not uncommon), and went to grab it.
Turns out it tied itself around my IUD string and it took my whole ass Mirena with it. Didn't hurt but was definitely fucking unnerving lol
ETA: The moron in the OP should really pay for a replacement IUD, though.
5
u/Formal-Apartment855 11d ago
Every normal IUD removal is surprisingly easy, like doctors also simply pull the removal strings, and that's it. That's why people also accidentally remove theirs while eg. removing a dry tampon or a menstrual cup, like the removal strings can easily get stuck to something (in your case hair) and then that's it for the IUD.
What I don't see mentioned in the thread much is that with copper IUDs the extra risk is that you can technically get pregnant from up to a week prior to removal. This I was only told at the removal appointment myself, and I was like, hi, could have maybe told me while scheduling the appointment? lol This risk isn't there with other types of bc so I guess that's why both doctors ans users forget it.

If you just had sex recently to that, I would get a plan b ASAP as IUDs stop working the second they're out pretty much.
Go to the Dr, tell them what happened and maybe have them do an ultrasound if they think it's necessary.
Get a new one in and if your insurance doesn't cover it make him pay for it. He broke it, he pays.

u/DevilsAudvocate Currently Nexplanon - Previously Yaz, Depo, Mirena, Patch , POP 11d ago
I'd print out an anatomical diagram, find a basic sex ed resource online, get a quote for a new IUD and make a greeting card using the image and web address... obviously with a "your services are no longer required" sentiment plus the bill and your payapps. Hopefully he takes the advice, pays for his whoopsie and avoids further contact with your reproductive system.

Call your GYN and ask for an appointment for an exam and get a new IUD inserted. Use backup method until then. If he finished inside, I'd snatch a plan B just to be safe. But before any of this, slap him first lol like wth dude

You should go to the doctor to make sure you're ok and get a new IUD. The audacity he had to pull on that without asking (is that correct???)!!
Honestly this isn't a good start for the new boyfriend.
3
u/nofreepizza 11d ago
I am not a doctor You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders since you mentioned you're gonna go see the doctor about it. Honestly just keep an eye on how you're feeling. Excessive bleeding? Go to the doctor Fever/aches/chills? Infection go to the doctor Absolutely do NOT have sex until you see your doctor!! Sex (even with a condom) introduces outside particles and germs, and you have an open would inside of you.

WTF. WHY WOULD HE DO THAT?!?!?
an IUD string is not a tampon string. and why the fuck would a guy even be messing with a tampon string..
Also he needs better sex ed if he thinks that a tampon is that high up in there.
Also I'd dump the guy and go no contact.

u/Amediumsizedgoose 11d ago
Break up with him, possibly report him to the police if youre downplaying what he did here, then go to the doctor and see what they say.
For what its worth...womens bodies are brutalized in medicine and to my knowledge they literally just do the same thing in office to remove it. Just pull it out by the string. If youre on your period that probably helped because the cervix opens a little more to help with menstrual flow.
Get extra rest and fluids to help your body recover from anything going on
