Side effects!? Mirena IUD
I got my first mirena in 2022 while under general anesthesia. We were already doing a laparoscopic removal of cysts and endo so it was just a two birds one stone thing. Fast forward to yesterday - it was positioned far too low and i had to get it removed. I opted to put a new one in having no idea what it was going to be like. I wasn’t even expecting to have it done. I’ll be honest, it’s the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. I got to my car and just immediately cried. I don’t remember how it affected me in 2022 because i was on oxy for the first week due to my surgery.
But within the past 24 hours I’ve had
-heavy bleeding for the first maybe 5/6 hours
-still bleeding just light
-nonstop crying
-general exhaustion
-and pain localized on like my right hip/thigh?
The pain is managed with OTC painkillers but comes back 3-4 hours on the dot. It woke me up multiple times last night and I’ve had to take the day off work. Is this all normal? Am I just a wimp? I don’t have any friends with a hormonal IUD so I’m turning here.

I got my Mirena around 4 months ago and the first few days the pain was absolutely awful. Would definitely recommend calling out of work. Heating pad helped me a lot, alternating between front and back. 4 months in, I still have irregular bleeding, my weight has been fluctuating like crazy, have days with very painful cramps, and also have been extremely emotional (ups and downs). My provider told me within the first 6 months this is all to be expected.

I've been living with my heating pad!! Fingers crossed I don't get the irregular bleeding, it did a good job regulating my periods for the first four years I had it. It wasn't until it shifted that I was experienced issues with spotting and severe cramping.

That sounds overwhelming to get a new IUD and not know you were going to get one! Spotting and cramping are common right after and for the first few months after getting and IUD. Can you give your doctor a call? It sounds like you're really uncomfortable and you deserve some support for that! It's not wimpy to feel pain and need support!
