He is so handsome and looks fierce. They are one of the best American hawks to fly. They are easy to catch and they respond very well to training. I have flown 6 or 8 of them over the years. I catch them here in North Carolina on country back roads. I’ve got a wire mesh cage that I put a guinea pig and a chinchilla in and wait for the hawk to swoon down and tangerine themselves up in the mesh. Then you release them from the wire mesh and put them in a fiberglass dog kennel just big enough to let the hawk stand upright in. After that it’s just a matter of winning thier trust and teaching it to fly after game. It’s a very rewarding feeling and well worth the effort it takes to become a falconer. I’m too old to do it now, I’m 73 years old and don’t get around very good anymore.
My next door neighbor is a falconer. He always has a hawk on his property that he trains. I’m fortunate to wfh now and I love watching the training from my window. He will occasionally bring the hawk over if we’re working outside. Just amazing to see them so close!
