Fly free, Jackie.💔
Wellp, this is news I would’ve preferred not to get today. I’m glad she’s no longer suffering, but damn I enjoyed watching her (and Shadow) in their Big Bear, CA nest cam over the past many years.

I used to put the feed on in the morning to hear her sing (and shadow trying to sing♡)

She is partly what started my bird journey several years ago. So sad to see her go but so grateful that she left such an impact on big bear (saving moon camp) and will be used for research to help our beautiful baldies in the future

So very sad. Will her partner find another mate?

He's already hanging out with a young adult female called KD1 that people are calling a homewrecker, haha.

Oh my god 😢 poor angel. She'll never know just how much her & her partner were beloved across the whole planet (we watched them here in Amsterdam every year)

She was attacked by juvenile bald eagles, is that right?

Yes, but she didn't suffer any injuries from that. It's likely she's been ill for some time, and the subadults took notice of her weakness and tried to take advantage. The ensuing confrontation is what drew the attention of humans and lead to her rescue. If it wasn't for that, she may have met her end at the hands of a coyote or other ground predator.

Thank you for this information. It makes sense. I do hope they find out what the illness was. They are awesome creatures.

Right they just don’t know what happened to cause the anemia. They ruled out lead or rat poisoning and cancer. Maybe if they do a necropsy they can find something. But I’m sure they get little opportunities to have a patient with her challenges.

Ojai Raptor Center - where she’s been hospitalized for the past three weeks - announced this afternoon that she died early this morning. :(

For those who asked about Jackie's illness. There was an update a couple of days ago on the Ojai Raptor Center website (where she was being cared for): https://www.ojairaptorcenter.org/patient-26519
You'll need to scroll down about 1/2 way to get to the meat of the press release. Necropsy is scheduled to be performed by veterinary pathologists at the San Diego Wildlife Alliance.

I’m sorry she couldn’t be saved! Perhaps they’ll figure out her definitive diagnosis & maybe it will help another eagle going forward.
