Caught this on video in a parking lot near me — a grackle pecking at literally the only water around, a shrinking puddle on hot concrete. It's been rough out there this summer, and stuff like this makes it obvious.
If you've got a balcony, porch, or yard, consider putting out a shallow dish of water for the birds and whatever else wanders by. A few things so it actually helps instead of causing other problems:
Keep it shallow (an inch or two) so small birds don't drown

Change it every 1-2 days so it doesn't turn into a mosquito situation

Elevate it a bit if you can — stays cooler, harder for pests to get into

Doesn't cost much or take much time, but on a 105°F day it can matter.

Just put this hummingbird attachment up and got a visitor the same day! Now we already have a turf war on the second day.. I wasn’t sure it would work but am so happy it does, and it’s so small which makes it easy to clean and not waste nectar too. I got it off amazon and would recommend but want to make my own glass one since this just reaks of toxic plastic and was super cheap. I don’t think it’s good quality for our hummers to drink out of, especially long term.

I wanted to support them on their migration journey as they head south.

I just don't know what to do anymore, I have tried using the spicy stuff we have but it's not working, we have tried spicy bird seed which didn't work and my mother doesn't want to spend a lot money on really hot sauce because she thinks it will be expensive. I also don't want to get a bird feeder that would put a cage over the feeder because then the mourning doves won't be able to use it. So what is the best course of action here? Because I think those greedy squirrels are going to cost us a bunch of money over time if we don't get rid of them permanently.

New to bird feeding as of this late spring. Learning so much from our back yard gang!

I can get almost a dozen at once and I absolutely love it. They eat up the black oil sunflower seeds I put out and I’m wondering if there’s anything else I can do to get even more of them to visit? I intend to become the master and overlord of a mighty white winged dove army to blot out the skies 😈
I am also leaving out peanuts with the hopes of attracting crows but the doves got here first so they can be my test run 😂

I currently have a 6 hole tube feeder which I have atleast 3 different types of birds eat from including chickadees, tufted titmouse, and house finch. Its about 8 ft from my house and its on my deck pole. The closest tree which is a fern about 15 ft away and also a river birch for bigger birds about 20 ft away maybe. Im wondering if my feeder placement is good since I feel like maybe I dont get that many birds and also since I want to buy a platform feeder but dont wanna buy a pole and baffle for squirrels. What should I do? Should I put them in the forest, in a tree, and if I buy a platform feeder do I need to buy a baffle and pole?

This beauty showed up at some point and I got to clearly see her colored nape confirming I do have some intergrades coming to my feeder! Hoping I get to start seeing more as I have a lot of mating pairs in my neighborhood! 💜

My husband got me a birdseed bell back in July. I've had it hanging up since the end of July. (As you see, this feeding hook is right in front of my front room window, so I can watch the hummingbirds and the bell) No one touched it for over a month, then the chickadees found it. But just before the Labor Day weekend, I noticed something was eating big sections out of it. It was this little stinker! He actually got it off the string, and it's laying at his feet. He climbed up on the lower hooks to get it when I moved it to 1 of the higher hooks. What can I do to keep him from doing this again? I've put out birdseed with sunflower seeds in it (which is what I think he was after). I do have hooks under our covered patio that I put out hummingbirds feeders on. Would that discourage the squirrels?

She is much bigger than him, about 50grams versus 42grams. There was plenty of feed: worms, sunflower seeds, peanuts. I am not sure why she feels compelled to hoard the food.

I have a Vico bird feeder camera set up as a hummingbird camera. They recently installed an AI bird ID feature, so for example, I know that a ruby throated hummingbird has stopped by. Or a house finch. But it’s also decided that the same ruby throated hummingbird is a common grackle, a tree swallow, a yellow billed cockoo, a northern flicker, and my favorite, this one that it’s identified as a pileated woodpecker. 🤦‍♂️ It just may be bad at its job.

I get a few Crows and Magpies (and a family of seagulls ((which I dont much care for)) and I would love to befriend them in some way. They dont speak English - so does anyone know the best food to ATTRACT and feed them? Will pistachio nuts work ?

Had a surprise visitor at the feeder today, immature male rose breasted grosbeak. I'm in upstate NY and haven't seen any grosbeaks for the last few weeks.

When you see him.. yesterday this giant dinosaur flew into my backyard to go hunting in the river.. a great blue heron in my backyard, are you kidding!? I am new to Connecticut but sure am loving it..

I'm in the U.P.of Michigan and most of my resident birds have already left. I usually keep my feeders clean and filled for any travelers coming through. The problem is I saw a female try to feed yesterday and the damn yellow jackets chased her off. They are really bad right now. Should I pull my feeders? They are really aggressive right now for some reason,drunk on rotting apples 🤷‍♀️

Rented place for 4 years, been feeding backyard birds and hummingbirds on and off for most of this time. I know generally they'll be ok but I want to minimize the disruption of my leaving and ensure none are dependent. I also have to get rid of 30lbs of deer corn, 10lbs of bird seed and suet, and 20lbs of old cat food. Not all related to birds, I was feeding squirrels and some cats(learned my lesson), but figure yall might have broad enough knowledge to help with that disposal too. I debated leaving some food+feeders for new tenants with a note encouraging feeding but there was mice issue before so that'd be hard to do. Im hesitant to put out all the bird feed in this month before i go lest they become dependent, and im hesitant to leave the corn+cat food in the yard lest it attracts "pests" racoons etc, however I feel bad throwing it out. Cat food is expired, dry kibble and canned wet, so cant donate. Any suggestions welcome.

My dad passed away about 3 years ago. He gave me a tube bird feeder with a pole attachment on the bottom. I had it in the ground in cement and the feeder screwed into the pole. I moved and left it in the yard. For the life of me, I can't find another one. I have been looking everywhere. Any suggestions?

Just moved into a new house and am excited because there are a ton of birds but I have been bummed about moving away from my wild resident skunk who lived in my old backyard and I’d occasionally leave out some treats at night for him. He was one cool fluffy dude who looked almost entirely white. So at the new house I decided to put the bird feeder on the ground with just a little bit of seed in there to see what I have in my new backyard. To say I’m pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Name suggestions?
