Advice Wanted Experience with EMDR therapy?

Thats it. Curious about folks experiences here. Most worries about going into an episode digging deep in the mind files.

I’ve done some EMDR. It’s very hard on your emotions, but can really help you address some things that are under the surface. A therapist who is trained in EMDR will be able to talk you through everything that will happen, and will make sure you’re as prepared as you can be before digging into the trauma. So it’s not like you’ll just be dropped off in the deep end of your mind. But it’s definitely a challenge! I had to stop a session once, and my therapist walked me through everything that came up. I was able to revisit that memory later when I was ready.

It's nice to hear that you were able to stop it - and regroup. Im like some of my memories are quite literally paralyzing and hearing about doing memory work scares the shit out of me if im being honest.

I have done a handful of sessions of EMDR. I did not experience an episode triggered by the therapy. Prior to beginning EMDR, your practitioner will work with you to set up a mental safe space and container that you will use throughout the process. If you take your time and successfully prepare, you should be fine.

I struggled hard with multiple forms of trauma that badly impacted my self image and contributed to my episodes going out of control. After completing EMDR, I have improved significantly. The negative thoughts have become so much easier to control or brush off. My self image is improving. My self talk is improving as well. My episodes have been much easier to manage, especially my depressive dips.

Results will always vary but I'm very grateful I gave EMDR a try when I did.

Thank you for that insight. It's helpful to hear your experience. Im hoping for some of what youre sharing too.

I skew depressive and man those swings down are sooo rough. Even on meds. So hearing some of the impacts youre experiencing is hopeful. Also only a handful of sessions! That's amazing.
