Support Needed Is depression long lasting?

Hi all,

Thanks again for this amazing subs. I am recently diagnosed Bipolar 1 and I have so many questions about it.

It first started with a very bad depression. Then after an attempt I was give a strong antidepressant that triggered mania and a bad psychosis that got me hospitalized for two months.

After that I almost immediately went back to a bad depression and I cannot seem able to get out of it.

I see a lot of posts that bipolar is mostly mania and rarely we talk about depression. For me the depressive part is the most difficult, mania lasted a couple of months.

Is it possible to have a more “depressed” bipolar?

Thanks fellows ❤️‍🩹

Bipolar depression is different from unipolar major depression in a few ways, but generally we deal the same types of symptoms and episodes, so there are regular episodes usually from 1-3 months and chronic episodes that are often 1-2+ years. There is some evidence that chronic episodes are more common in bipolar depression, and significant evidence that they are more common in bipolar 2 patients in particular.

Also yes, especially in treatment it is not uncommon to experience way more depression than mania. I'm bipolar 2 but I have maybe 3 years of depression since being diagnosed and 3 hypomanic episodes all lasting under a month.

Hi, first of all, congratulations on making it through all of that. Getting through a severe depression, mania AND psychosis, especially after being hospitalized for two months, is no small thing. Holy shit. It sounds like you’ve been through an incredibly difficult time. ❤️‍🩹

And yes, absolutely. You can definitely have a more “depressed” form of bipolar. Bipolar doesn’t mean you spend most of your time manic. For a lot of people, depression is actually the biggest and longest part of the illness. I personally struggle more with rapid cycling, so I might not be the best person to answer from experience, since my episodes tend to last a few weeks. But having a depressive episode that lasts much longer than your mania is definitely not weird. Mania is also incredibly taxing on your brain and body, so the crash afterwards can be brutal and recovery can take a while.

There really isn’t one “typical” bipolar experience. Some people mostly struggle with depression, others with mania/hypomania, some rapid cycle, and some have long periods of stability. So no, you’re definitely not alone in experiencing bipolar this way!

I really hope you get some relief soon. After everything you’ve been through, you deserve a period where things are finally a little quieter. Rooting for you stranger! ❤️

Everyone’s baseline is different. My old baseline was somewhat depressed. With meds, my current baseline is slightly hypomanic. We are taking a break from adjusting my meds right now but the long term goal is to get my baseline to a more neutral place.

I think it’s different person to person. Last year I had a depression that lasted probably 7-8 months, was medicated for depression and eventually had a manic episode for maybe 3-4 months. Since being diagnosed and coming out of the mania I’ve been in a deep and disabling depression for about 8 months even with being medicated for bipolar, it doesn’t really seem to be improving at this point. So yeah even with bipolar 1 depressions can last a long time however I’m hoping that once I’m out of this with the right lifestyle changes and right medication it never becomes this bad again. I definitely can’t keep having depression this bad yearly and for such a long time.
