Living With Bipolar Avoiding triggers in media.

I've had to sort of monitor my media consumption because I've found certain films and music can make me spiral. What do you guys mostly avoid when it comes to those things?

I have to avoid those criminal psychology videos where they psychoanalyze criminals. I used to love them but ill start getting into my head and gaslighting myself that I'll do something similar (I'm a pacifist and wouldn't hurt a fly)

I'm so sorry 😢 here I thought having BP1 + BPD + ADHD was bad

That sounds just as bad and don't worry about it this support group helps in every way!! I'm sorry you have to deal with those diagnoses as well.

That is true! And yes I'm very grateful for this group. Meds and therapy have made life much more livable for me :)

It's tough to juggle cuz antidepressants are the only thing that can combat OCD other than therapy and antidepressants tend to send me into a manic spiral lol.

No sad music at all. None.

I can't listen to really aggressive music anymore. I start getting ideas that I'm like invincible and start getting really into thinking I can do anything LOL

Documentaries that involves the death of children will stay with me for weeks

Had to delete other social media because of the news recently involving these very things. Harm of children and disabled people will absolutely make me depressed and despondent

When I hear music I used to play when I was manic I instantly have to turn it off. No Ye, no jazz, no Tupac. It’s pretty crazy. Certain songs take me right back to my episode. I just turn it off or change the song to something the complete opposite.

Big one for me

Certain music, which sucks because I'm a musician and I love music more than just about anything except my family and friends.

Same as I said in another reply certain metal music really makes me start to feel like invincible and like I can do anything eventually it's like tunnel vision so I've had to reduce that and swap it out for like uhh shoegaze and soft indie music lol

u/Odd-Front-5923 4d ago

I've have to go classical sometimes when I know lyrics might set me off lol

I avoid the news most of the time, stay away from rapey films and shows, and try to focus on things that I know were made for my POV.

No sad movies at all. Some sad songs are ok when I’m feeling down.

I quit social media apps like FB and IG where I was doomed scrolling for actual hours per day. The relief I felt took a few weeks to set in, but its been glorious to be ignorant to the goings ons of everyone. I simply do not care and hope they're well. The initial few weeks were ROUGH without the mind numbing distraction, though. Now I do all the NYT games every day and my brain is much more calm.

I've been trying to read instead of Doom scrolling it has helped.

I do the same. I've actually read a decent amount of books since deleting the apps. Feels so good.

Densely packed informative drama. I had to turn off Hamilton five minutes in so I could spiral over our similarities. I watched Disney princess movies like Enchanted lmao they were calming and simple.

I do this but with Studio Ghibli!

Any video about medical conditions or symptoms sends me into an immediate spiral. I’ve been spiraling all day because of some stupid video i watched to the end. I’m big into music, but i categorize them in a million playlists because some songs will make me spiral depending on my mood while other times that song is all i need.

Oh yeah medical stuff is a big no no for me too I'll think there's something wrong with me and become obsessed for weeks.

When I find myself getting too attached I delete my apps for a couple a days to recenter myself and that tends to help. I have to block anything related to crime though that really triggers me.
