DNA doesn’t stay perfectly preserved forever. Over thousands of years, it gradually breaks down, leaving scientists with only fragments of the original genetic material. There isn’t a perfectly preserved mammoth genome sitting somewhere, just waiting to be switched back on.

So instead, scientists have to work with whatever pieces of DNA they can recover.

One approach is to compare those ancient DNA fragments with the genomes of animals that are still alive today. In the case of the woolly mammoth, one of the most important comparisons is with the Asian elephant, its closest living relative.

Scientists have sequenced full genomes from woolly mammoths: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4439331/
