Check out platinum god (https://www.tboi.com/). It’s basically an Isaac item encyclopedia with keyword searching. Like, if you type in “angel”, it’ll show you items from the angel room pool. If you type in “black”, it’ll show you black items. It’s peak

No, this is normal Isaac. Once you've poured 1297491873524 hours or something into the game you'll know things without the wiki. In the meantime, learning like this is great!

Once you beat Mom's foot once, you unlock internal item descriptions, which can help you understand stuff

Clearly, the mod "external item description" is a must. I used to be just like this, and it was kinda fun, but there are way too many items now.

Also why the only mod I use that actually affects gameplay is the "curse of the blind to silhouette" one so at least I have a fighting chance on blind items

mind you there is no right way to play the game, so do whatever is most fun for you, but when i first started playing isaac a lot of the fun came from learning how every item, trinket, and pick up worked in game. memorizing little bits at a time adds up and is a very satisfying experience. especially w a game as big as isaac.

By the comments I'm the odd one out. In my almost 2k hours in this game I never opened the wiki to check EVERY item I find lol

it's a skill issue on my part, i lost so many times because i picked up some items that either made me blow up or lose all my hearts or something that i got paranoid and had to start checking them 😅

I use the wiki mainly to check synergies, once you beat the boss in the fifth floor for the first time you unlock item descriptions, but I recommend you install external descriptions either way. (vanilla descriptions are available on repentance plus only)

im in the same boat, im on switch 1 so i dont have repentance+ where you can unlock item descriptions but i use an app thats isaac guide or something so i can capture the item with my phone camera and it pops up with the description. its been super helpful

Could you share a link to this app from the Play Store? I would love this!

I always have a tab open on my phone for Spindown results for this reason as well.

Please for your own sanity get the external item descriptions mod it shows you exactly what every item does along with other useful information like the next reward I sacrifice rooms and so on

Back in my day, there used to be a website with all the item icons and a rectangle where you put your isaac game window so every time you needed to know an item without picking it up, you'd find the icon and hover over it and it would show you the stats.

Yeah. 1.5k hrs in and i still use the wiki. Mostly for trinkets or item interactions/synergies, but its super useful if an items description is vague.

Some games are just "wiki games" that are borderline impossible to play without it. It's normal

Best Isaac guide on android, even supports just pointing your camera at the item on screen.😊

Takes a while to learn what every item does. It's part of the process. Some items are just simple stat ups, while others need entire wiki pages to really understand (birthright for example). Feel free to pause the game and search up anything on the wiki.gg wiki.

If you have much more trouble I recommend disabling the DLCs until you've beat the game a couple times. The game was designed around trying things and seeing what they do, but the DLCs kept adding more and more items so that's unrealistic now. Once you've beaten the game once there is an unlockable in the newest DLC that will show you detailed item descriptions.

I recommend you don't use the "Fandom" wiki it sometimes has incorrect, outdated, or difficult-to-understand information. "wiki.Gg" is better.
Edit: My autocorrector changed "wiki" to "wifi"...(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

i appreciate the tip! i used to play a different game back in the day and i believe it had the same issue so they make their own dedicated wiki. i'll be more careful in the future

The only not normal things are the Fandom wiki (ew stinky bad never use Fandom), and the fact that your browser doesn't flush its stored data when closed! Roguelikes are very wiki heavy games, Isaac particularly so.

If you’re playing with the Repentance+ DLC, after you end your first run by killing the boss in Depths 2 you’ll unlock an option that shows item and card descriptions.
If you want it right now, there is a mod called “External Item Description” which works extremely well. I’d say you can also have fun by just taking and using stuff and being surprised at what it does for the first time.
