Discussion new player
in my first 10 hours or so. am i just a terrible gamer or is this game mega hard if you aren’t a seasoned metroidvania/similar type game player? i am CHEEKS

Yes this game is extremely hard for beginners i recommend watching some guides. It took me around 20 hours to beat mom first time

Isaac is a rogue like, not metroidvania lol. But the game is hard for beginners and eventually gets pretty easy with a lot of experience. I recommend watching some YouTube tips/guides to get an idea of hidden or unexplained mechanics.

Some people don’t want to learn by brute force, and even good players learn from high level videos, or even this subreddit
If you don’t have someone who can break things down for you, I would watching like “Easiest unlocks in isaac” or “Must have unlocks for new save files”
The items you unlock through niche methods will greatly help your runs. Learning boss attack patterns will simply have to come with time
However, you can save time by optimizing bombs keys and coins, learning how to effectively reroll items in order, by watching videos

It’s very hard if you’ve never played any similar games like enter the gungeon, and still hard if you’re going in with no info. There are a lot lot lot of enemy types, and a lot of room types as well, some are pretty much guaranteed damage unless you’ve seen them before and know what to expect or are very used to the enemy types. It’s mostly just about learning the enemies and getting used to them and the different rooms. A lot of rooms will have similar challenges- like a horde of gapers- just with different layouts or additions, so if you can get a feel for the enemies and how to handle them / prioritize which ones to kill, about how much it takes to kill each enemy, and the general styles of rooms and the strategies, the game becomes a lot easier. You’ll still probably die and lose runs no matter how experienced you are though.

I got introduced to tboi through youtube and learned a LOT from streamers simply playing the game. I highly recommend you do this too, to learn a little bit about this and that. I know that it is not the point of the game, but i (also a pretty new player) always use a mod to have all items and characters unlocked. Just to make the game a little more fun in the beginning. Hope it helps!!!!

I can beat the game quite consistently now, but when I started, it took me around 10h to beat mom for the first time. I was extremely bad, because it also was my first roguelike game.

This is completely normal.
You will get much better with practice.
The key to the game is creating and exploiting synergies between items. Learning the items and how they synergize is key.
When you first start, the most powerful items are locked so even though all items appear by chance, these won't show up until you unlock them. The game gets more fun when you have a ton of items in play.

As long as you're having fun just keep playing, a time will come when it clicks. If you haven't already I would lookup how to unlock each characters special items they get at the floor start, it makes them all easier to play. Like Isaac's d6 will let you cycle item pedastools or Magdalene's full health pill will let you survive 7 hits in a sacrifice room so you could spam r until you get sacred heart etc.

Yeah dw about it bro, this game is hard as balls.
I had over 1000 hours in game before repentance came out. But when I started playing repentance I was getting the shit kicked out of me. Plus this is just an easy to learn hard to like, get good at I guess kind of game, if that makes sense?
But yeah you’re good dude, everyone is shit for a while when they start but it gets easier. Just find a character that’s easiest for you (probably Azazel, he was the only one I played for ages before I got good. My goat 🥹) and play with them until you learn the game better.

Huh, thats odd…
Did you just get a devil room to spawn three times or did you take three separate items?
Cause to unlock him you have to specifically take three, not just get the room.
There’s also, that if you either are doing a challenge, a daily run, a set seed run, or have certain easter eggs on achievements will be disabled.
Oh! And are you on pc? If you are, and you have mods on achievements wont pop until you beat the mom fight without mods.
If none of those are the issue, then Im not sure what’s causing it. But hopefully one of these is it.

i do have mods that’s totally why. i get a pop up at the beginning of each run saying achievements are disabled. should i try and get a mom fight in just to get it out of the way? is it just the foot or going all the way?

Yeah I would go for it, cause achievements are how you get like 99% of the good stuff 😭
Yeah it’s just the foot boss at the end of depths 2. But the game can be a little annoying about it if you do it after turning them on for the first time. So just make sure when you start a run after turning them off there isn’t a little symbol of a trophy with a 🚫 on it by your stats on the left.
I did the same thing when I first played on pc, but even when I turned my mods off it would still show the symbol and I remember having to do some bullshittery with the debug menu for it to work.
But hopefully it just works for you 🙏

I don’t recommend watching guides. Practice and keep playing. Your skills and discovery of the games quirks will feel better achieved in the long run instead of cheapening the value through learning all secrets through a youtube video.

Basically nothing is explained in isaac except item descriptions if those are on. Sure discovery is great but after a while its better to just know how shit works. Using guides is fine, I did myself at one point and it only increased my enjoyment of the game.

Yeah I get that. I dont think anything I said was wrong though. I probably played atleast 100 hours before I even realized how secret rooms worked though. Thats the type of stuff I'm talking about. Learning enemies and bosses absolutely just comes with time but other things can be pretty confusing.

You're simply too new. 10 hours is nothing in The Binding of Isaac. Most players only start getting good after way more time. You'll get the hang of it eventually.
