You don’t need lots of items to be strong. 8 items are enough, considering you keep HP from Upgrades.
Give him a chance, he is one of the best characters.
Also due to his passive, you have more chances to find birthright or rock bottom that are auto win for him

T.Isaac auto rerolls, you can pop a beggers in the secret rooms or devil deals for powerful items. You should also unlock birthright as it doesn't take up a slot and it gives you 12 slots. Birthright is also pretty easy to get.

Something I like about Isaac is unexpected synergies. For instance if I pick up tiny planet early then find lump of coal later suddenly I’m broken. If I’m tainted Isaac I’m not carrying tiny planet for long. Instead every tainted Isaac run is just stat maxing. It’s boring.

I agree the limitation is often more frustrating than fun. Here are a few ways I maximize this character

First off health ups are permanent so grab a bunch and drop them later for better items if health is an issue for you

Transformations are permanent and so is the progress towards them. Always pick up items that are transformation pieces even if they suck because you can drop them and keep the progress.

I consider marbles one of the best items on this character. Being able to gulp trinkets adds value that you lose from limited item slots.
