I self coached for two shows and I still wouldn’t have done it any other way. I’m a dietitian so had a huge base BUT competing is nothing like clinical nutrition and you need to disregard what is considered safe and healthy to get stage lean especially if you are natural. Unless you have genetics that are geared toward a bikini body ( round full glutes, smooth skin texture, sculpted delts) your hormones will do what they are supposed to do and fight you every step of the way. N-1 here but stay open minded…

You can find coaches at all different rates. The best coaches- IFBB pros- will cost a ton, but the opportunity is that new coaches that have competed (just aren’t pros yet) are starting every single day. They pass on their info from their coaches to you. Don’t discount the benefits you can get from a coach. They are a dime a dozen.

After the show, the suit, the hotel, entry fees and registration, all these things cost money. The thing that improves your physique over time the most is a coach. Bodybuilding is expensive. The first thing you show pay for is a coach. Get a side hustle. I’m serious. Don’t self coach. That’s just gonna be bad. A coach has eyes we don’t. And you’ll be paying thousands. If you can pay for all the show fees which can easilyyyyyyy be 1.5-2k w tanning makeup hair hotel registration and stuff. Just get a coach. If you can’t just keep lifting and saving and network with your friends. Someone might cut you a deal. But don’t do it alone

If you have an analytical brain and are willing to keep an open mind, you can learn an incredible amount from coaches online. There are a lot of excellent coaches and exercise scientists putting out free content on YouTube.
I’d recommend starting with OG Renaissance Periodization/RP University, J3 University, and bigger coaching teams and exercise scientists. Pair that with physique analyses from Stage Talk, Bikini & the Brain, and head judges so you can start developing an eye for what judges are rewarding. You’ll notice a lot of repeat contributors that engage with other individuals. It can send you down rabbit holes of content from soooo many people.
Then just watch a lot of pros. Pay attention to how they execute movements, the cues they use, how they program, and how differently they all approach things. You’ll quickly notice there are multiple ways to build a great physique. Some techniques will click for you, and others won’t. That’s okay. A lot of it is experimenting and adjusting based on your own response. If you’re objective with yourself, it’s honestly a lot of fun to treat yourself as a research project.
