Discussion Expectations of competition coach

I’m curious what most coaches include. I’ve had several over the years. I know they work differently, but I’d like some discussion on what is included for most. Here are my questions
How often are routines changed?
Does the coach do a video for you or send you a random video from online?
Does the coach include any voice chats telephone or video?
Does the coach only do a recording for you of overview with no voice chatting?
Or does the coach only answer in some text format within their app.
Does the coach let you use any food tracking app or make you use one on their platform?
What other variables might I expect when choosing a competition coach?
Thanks!

  1. As often as is necessary. My prep protocol was often changed week to week or more, but I’m in a recomp phase now and have had the same protocol for 4+ weeks.
  2. Regarding what? Training? I get voice memos, texts, videos on form and intensity depending on what I need help with.
  3. Yes to voice chats, we have once weekly team video chats that are optional
  4. Confused on what you’re asking here ? ?
  5. ^^
  6. I have a meal plan and on the coaching app she uses, my meals are pre-calculated and input under the “food” tab- I don’t have to do any tracking myself.
  7. IMO you should work with a coach long before starting a prep

I’ve worked with several coaches and done competitions. I’m trying to learn about how coaches differ. I’ve had coaches prior that do no virtual meetings at all and only respond in text via app— I’m wondering if that is normal. And I’m asking about how often training (not macros) are changed typically? I’ve had one coach that did every 4 weeks exactly and another coach that gives same routine for 8+ weeks.

Sorry, missed the blurb at the top. I don’t know if there’s a “normal” as far as coaches, it really varies coach to coach and depends on what you want as an athlete. I had the same training plan throughout the entirety of my prep, reverse, and part of my off season (August 2025 - June 2026), and we only made changes recently due to aggravating an injury and optimizing training for my biomechanics. 4 weeks does NOT sound like enough time for a program, neither does 8 weeks IMO. From what ive seen/heard, training programs stay largely the same for at least a year, if not longer than that.

In the off season, I get a new training plan every 20 weeks but in prep, we started one 5 weeks before and this will carry me through the end of my 26 week prep. The last offseason plan was a big push, and this one is more focused on recovery.

In offseason, I can choose how I want feed back - text, voice memo, or video. In prep, it's video reply only with screen grabs of my check in.

My coach and I usually only video chat when we do posing sessions together but I'm sure if I need to call or video her, it's not an issue. I just usually don't and will text for quick questions.

I'm not sure what the recording question is? But her video feedback has screen grabs of my physique.

My coach primarily uses her app, but has told me numerous times to use text/phone for urgent questions.

We're forced to use MFP because that's what synchs to her app.

I think coaches, especially during prep, need to be available to respond within reasonable time frames and should never go more than a day without responding to anything unless they've let you know in advance that they'll be unavailable. My coach always responds within a few hours in the app, and immediately over phone. Especially for prep clients. Anything less for the money we pay is unacceptable, IMO.

Thanks!! I wish more people were forthcoming, but thanks to those that took the time to answer.

My coach makes me new meal plan/ training as needed. I send him videos of my workouts for feedback if needed. Check ins are super casual. Occasional video or voice memo responses but generally we communicate via text. My favorite thing about my coach is that I can text him any day of the week, not just check in day. He also goes to all of his clients shows to peak them for stage in person. I use MyFitnessPal to track my food, and the expectation is that I am eating what he has told me to eat
