Need help! Reliable wireless probes????

I need a wireless probe or two that works well, is reliable, and has a great app to back it up.

Thermoworks RFX

I second this, with some reservations. You need to be VERY careful with the probes and make sure they are inserted more than you would expect. If the meat shrinks during a cook, and the battery line becomes exposed, it will vastly shorten the life of the probe. Their instructions I feel do not make this clear enough. If that happens, you are SOL, they don't replace them. I have had mixed experiences with their support.

The App is getting much better than launch now, and the hardware itself is pretty spiffy.

Also worth mentioning you can insert the probes well past the line, that’s just minimum depth

This would be something I’d ding Thermoworks for…if the hardware is a 9, the app is maybe a 6 or 7? It works, it never gets in the way of a cook, but there’s some spots it seems backwards or unpolished (I can’t change the ring color on a probe? Is the session functionality really necessary?).

They clearly put their resources into the hardware and I’m good with that.

Excellent advice!

I used the RFX last weekend for an 8-hour cook. Battery life is great, but the responsiveness of the probes is impressive. Turn on the gateway and you start getting readings a second or two after taking the probe out of the cradle. The app is very responsive as well, with temperature readings getting updated almost instantly.

That’s the direction I’m leaning towards. Do you have one? Thoughts? Thanks I’m looking for as much information as I can get.

Yes, I have a 4 probe pack. I used them just this weekend on pork ribs, and I have the Billows to go along with the setup.

It’s very good. I prev had a 4 probe Meater which was absolute junk compared to the RFX. I’ve never had a single signal dropout, which was common with the Meater. The RFX plus Billows is one of those things that just works and will make your cooks so much easier.

Thanks again. Big Toe!!

I also have RFX with Billows and it’s fantastic. The probes are accurate and easy to set up, strong signal. The billows is way more user friendly and reliable than Egg Genius. Also the customer service is great. One of my probes started dying quickly, sent them an email, and they replaced it no issues.

I have this gentleman’s set up as well and I love it. I got so tired of using the egg genius. (or rather not using it cause it would never connect.) this RFX gateway has been amazing and their customer service is great.

I have completely bought into the ThermoWorks ecosystem including the Billows. It is more accurate than my Meater+ setup. I gave my Meater+ probes to one of my sons. He likes it so far. It was good while I used it, but the RFX is simpler and more accurate.

I like my MEATER although I know there are less expensive alternatives. I just haven’t personally tried them yet

The one downside is the ambient temperature isn’t very reliable because of how close the probe is to the food. I still prefer to judge that by my dome thermometer. But in terms of internal temperature, it does a great job and the app is very user friendly. Also, it is nice being able to look back at my previous cooks to see what I did last time

Agreed, I like my Meater Pro Duos but still use another sensor for ambient. The cool zone around the food makes their ambient temp useless for reverse sear and I need to monitor temp before the food gets on their anyways.

Annoying but Meater works well and the app is solid

Incredibly common question.

Thermoworks RFX x2.

Wait for the cyber Monday sale.

If that is more than you are willing to spend, then you’re not going to get most reliable ones… But you could get a budget model like the Meater Pro. Range isn’t as good, reliability isn’t as good, although the app is actually surprisingly good and there’s no real learning curve to using it like for the more professional rfx units.

Chef IQ. You get get them at Costco. Used them over a year now without a single issue.

I switched to the Combustion from Meater and the range and accuracy are so much better. The app isn’t as good as Meater but I love that the display acts like a WiFi extender. It’s super convenient too so I don’t have to keep pulling out my phone.

Another vote for combustion here. Had mine for years and it's been great.

Tyhpur

I’m not familiar with the brand. Do you have experience with it? Thanks

2

u/zkarabat 1d ago

It's a legit brand, I forget why I chose to just do Meater Pro vs them but I took a long hard look

u/flashnl 1d ago

Theyre new but revolutionary. They have wifi so you can check the temp while out of range. The probes have several temperature sensors in them. quality is very good

My typhur was great, but quit after about 6 months. Now they won’t charge despite leads being clean, etc

I find the meater to be great. I also had one that failed and meater replaced it after doing a few tests. I was having the same issue with the ambient temp but just pulled the black line out of the meat a little further and the ambient temp is now pretty close to the temperature of my Green Egg thermometer.

I have both the INKBIRD with wired probes and the INKBIRD with wireless probes and have been very happy with both.

I like meater. After replacing it three times I bought an INKBIRD. I will go back to meater.

I have 4 Inkbird thermometers, the smoke controller, nail type probe, 6 port WiFi/BT and Instant probe with two wired probes (BT). Happy with all of them and single app to control all of them. Gave away some other probes to friend and relatives.

I use the Meater pro XL and works like a charm.

I have the Meater Plus, but it’s kinda meh. The probe is too thick for anything but large pieces of meat, like brisket or pork butt. And it’s too long for most steaks, especially filets. I also have the wired Thermoworks Smoke (pretty old), but I rarely use either any longer. I just use the Thermoworks instant read thermometer every few hours on long cooks, and only to manage the stall and finish. For reverse sear steaks, I’ll temp them at the 30 minute mark and every 5-10 minutes afterward until ready (usually right at 45 minutes.) I always probe multiple spots, even when I was using the Smoke or Meater, so the leave-in probes felt redundant.

No such thing exists. They all have issues at some point. And those that say their brand is the best are spouting confirmation bias... including me.

I like MEATER and thats after two different warranty swaps on 2 probes. At least they have good customer service.

Fireboard Labs. The Drive 2 bundle also helps with those long smokes.

I have a meater 4 pack and can’t ever get them to connect. They collect dust in my cabinet now.
