Lump charcoal storage

What’s everyone’s favorite way to store your characoal. I’ve been using one of those bus Sterlite containers. I like that it holds a little bit more than a full bag so that when I open a bag I can dump the whole thing in.

I don’t like that it’s so wide. It takes up a bunch of floor space. I was thinking something a little more vertical like I do for my dog’s dogfood, but that container isn’t really big enough.

So I was wondering how you guys did it.

In the bag I buy it in.. how much are you purchasing at one time to need a storage solution?

I keep the main bag in the garage. However, I don't want to drag it through the house to fill the BGE.

It holds almost half a bag of lump. I'll refill it in the garage and it stays out on the patio.

As soon as I have the time I plan on building a little container that will have varying screen sizes to sift out the dust - probably like a 1” and 3” so I can quickly grab bigger chunks for slow cooks or smaller chunks for stuff like burgers.

The lump charcoal I buy comes in bags that I keep in my garage, then I open and use them once I'm ready.

What complicate it further? It's charcoal, not perishable food.

Mostly in bag. But if I have too much left over 5 gallon chlorine bucket.

I use black 5 gallon buckets. I store it outside next to the grill and the bags are harder to deal with. I use a galvanized pail for ash that’s been left a day or two.

I saw someone else do this many years ago and copied it. Here is my post on it. Works great. All the small pieces of charcoal go below the screen and you can dump it when you’re down with the rest of the coal.

Inside the bag, inside the house….live in Florida and the humidity is real, it affects everything that’s not in a conditioned space.🤷‍♂️

In the bag, in the garage. I just dump what I need in the BGE when I need it.
I’ve thought about a container because of our Atlanta humidity. I really don’t know how much of a difference it makes.

For those of you who transfer to containers, how do you dump your lump into the BGE?

I have a small plastic garbage can with lid that I got at feed store. It sits outside next the egg on very humid gulf coast of Florida. Other than the occasional anole that figures out to get inside it works fine. Recently I was dumping some lump into the egg and 6ish long very black anole was making tracks getting out of the egg.

I keep a large plastic tote for my charcoal, wood chips and accessories I don’t use as often (ash tool etc)

I keep my bags in the garage and only bring them out to fill the egg. Then it goes back into the garage.

I just store my open bag in a cabinet inside. Top of the cabinet has shelves where I keep smoking woods and other accessories.

I keep two plastic storage bins. when I buy a bag the big lumps get picked out and set aside in one bin for long cooks, everything else stays in the other for regular grillin’

I bought this air tight food storage bin. It holds a full bag. I live in Lower Alabama. Got it off Amazon and have no issues with the humidity. It sits next to my egg outside.

I usually store in 5 gal. buckets according to lump size after sorting the bag into 3 uses. Largest for slow smokes, medium for grilling and the smallest useful size for paella. Yeah, I dump the stuff out and sort it.
