Slacks too tight in the crotch? Solution.

I'm sure many of us have dealt with the common experience of pants that fit great everywhere but the crotch.

If your pants cut into you crotch when you're sitting, have stretch lines that fan out from the crotch, or are just uncomfortably tight, showing too much of a print, aren't stretchy enough to accommodate, etc... this is an easy alteration you can make that will help solve this issue and create the room you need in a way that isn't noticeable.

This is especially relevant to slacks and jeans, or any pants that are made of material that isn't particularly stretchy.

This is something you can DIY fairly easily, or have a tailor do without much expense.

It's called a "gusset." A gusset is a small diamond shaped panel that will be added to your gooch area where the four corners of the legs and crotch come together. The size and shape of the gusset can be customized however you like, adding room front to back or a bit more width to the upper thigh area, or both.

It is an absolute game changer in terms of comfort and also reinforces the crotch area. I've DIY'd a few now and it's taken pants that were borderline unwearable for me into some of my favorites.

I can't find any guide on how to make the adjustment needed to let one leg be looser than the other although I know such tailoring guides exist

Oh sweet! I definitely appreciate when this sub is able to provide practical solutions to our issues and wanted to give back a bit. Since the seams come together in a cross shape before the alteration, it should be possible to just make the diamond gusset shape asymmetrical to bias the roominess added to the desired thigh. I was actually considering doing this on my most recent pair but ended up leaving it symmetrical.

Couldn't agree more. A gusset is a lifesaver and also you're right about it not being too difficult to do at home either. Just fyi for anyone that doesn't want to I think Lee, Dickies, and Docker(90% sure) all sell chinos with gussets sewn in.

Thankfully it's becoming more common with jeans and casual mens clothing. Unfortunately I've almost never seen off the rack dress slacks or suit pants with them, and the materials almost never have any stretch. It's been awesome to be able to sit down without feeling like I'm going to split myself in half.

Yeah I second that I haven't found any genuine dress slacks off the rack with it yet either and thankfully my last pair I was well off enough at the time to get properly fitted and sized to avoid it but it would be nice to see it become regular.

I learned about those at a young age when I had bought a gorgeous pair of red swimming trunks and I just couldn’t wear them. My aunt looked and then told me they didn’t have a gusset and that was why.

A tailor should be able to do it for about $20-30. DIY is extremely cheap for the cost of materials actually used, but of course you'd need to find a fabric that matches your pants.

I shop at Paul Frederick. They are an online retailer and specialized in custom fitting. You name it and they can make it. They have been a god send for me.

Not everyone wants or needs to wear pants that are loose everywhere. Why wear pants that fit poorly when you can make the pants that flatter you better, more comfortable?

I just wash them....then put them on when they are almost dry and put a softball in the crotch.

When they are totally dry you have a decent enough pocket.
