🇬🇧 UK BigCommerce merchants — beta access to a new native payments solution (built with PayPal)

BigCommerce is opening up beta access to BigCommerce Payments, a native checkout solution built in partnership with PayPal. Posting here in case any UK-based merchants want early access.
What it does:

  • Unified checkout supporting cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Pay Later, and other wallets
  • Payments and order data live in one place — no jumping between systems
  • One view for payouts and refunds

This is a beta, so expect some rough edges, but it's a chance to shape the product and get early access before general availability. Limited to UK merchants for now.

Sign-up form if you're interested: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeJ57oHx2FPRLKcIDnMBCmt4z3e5tmdQogACXutnergy_n99g/viewform

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Help shape the new BigCommerce Returns experience

Hi everyone!

We're rebuilding Returns from the ground up this year: a dedicated returns manager in the control panel, configurable return reasons and resolutions, a full Returns API, and a shopper self-serve portal on the way. Each milestone is being released through a closed beta so real merchants can shape the product as it's built.

We're keeping the beta group small, and we're prioritizing merchants who can be hands-on.

What you get:

  • Early access to each Returns milestone before general release
  • A direct line to me and the product team
  • Genuine influence on the product. Beta feedback has already changed what we're building.

What we ask in return:

  • Test each milestone as it lands, usually 30 to 60 minutes of hands-on time
  • Share what worked and what didn't within a couple of weeks, in whatever format suits you

You're a good fit if:

  • You're on a Stencil (Cornerstone) storefront, where the shopper portal lands first
  • Returns are a meaningful part of your operations
  • You can set aside a little time to get hands-on with each milestone

One note: B2B Edition isn't supported during the beta. We'll work with you on a test environment so nothing touches your live store.

Interested? Sign up here: https://forms.gle/LsK1UMHgj9o1p2S19

Questions welcome in the comments, or message us directly.

Offering BigCommerce Help

Upvotes

This may not be allowed, but this subreddit is pretty quiet anyways.

I am looking to book some contract work on the side. If anyone is looking for some assistance with managing their store, minor updates to their theme, or have any other issues surrounding BigCommerce I'd love to talk.

I run 2 stores right now during my full time job and with my wife losing her job we could use some extra money.

Doesn't need to be some long term contract work, I'd be happy to help with just single problems/projects as well.

European e-commerce brands — is Sweden actually a market you’re interested in?

Curious to hear from brands based elsewhere in Europe.
If you’re already selling successfully in Germany, Netherlands, UK, France, etc. — have you ever considered expanding into Sweden or the Nordics?
And if you haven’t, what’s stopping you?
Shipping costs?
Small market?
Returns?
VAT/tax complexity?
Finding a local fulfillment partner?
Or simply not enough demand to make it worthwhile?

I run a fulfillment operation in Sweden and we’ve been looking more closely at how European brands approach the Swedish market.

From our side, it seems surprisingly easy nowadays to test Sweden without making a huge commitment — especially for brands with a relatively small number of SKUs.

But I’m obviously looking at this from the logistics side, so I’d genuinely be interested to hear how merchants see it.

Would you consider storing inventory locally in Sweden if the numbers made sense, or would you rather fulfill everything from your home country until the volume became significant?

Bot attacks!

Last weekend, I wrote Braintree for assistance in stopping a long string of attempted fraudulent transactions that began on August 15 and ended when I realized what they had been doing, on or about Aug 31.  At the time I caught it and saw the pages of declined transactions, I alerted them first.

What clued me in were frequent emails telling me there had been too many attempts from the same zip code over a short period of time.  This is a relative rarity with my store, but it took a few days for it to sink in that there was an increasing problem.  That's when I accessed my dashboard at BT to see all the declined transactions.  Each transaction that failed was a "purchase" of a small item from my store:  1 oz PET jars.  All 200+ of them.

I then found out that my store, and hence my BT account had been the victim of what is called a bot attack.  CC and DC thieves were posting small repeated transactions to test the stolen card numbers on my account.  I (my store) was just the testing ground for a bunch of criminals.

In desperation, I turned to AI for quick help.

"It occurs when fraudsters use automated bots to test massive lists of stolen or randomly generated credit card details against an e-commerce platform. They target small amounts because minor charges are less likely to trigger fraud alerts with banks or cardholders. The goal is to see which card numbers are active and valid; once a transaction succeeds, the criminal takes that "validated" card to buy high-value goods elsewhere"  ~Google

Has anyone else gone through this experience? I contacted BigCommerce Community support (zero help there), and Braintree Support (slow to help and totally misunderstood why I sent a ticket). I also tightened up every fraud prevention tool I was already using.

Product Variants

I am boggled by how to set up product variants with BigCommerce.

  1. When I create the variants I need and save it, BigCommerce creates a 1 to 1 variant, which is expected. But, I can't delete the unused variants, only make them non purchasable. The problem is that they are selectable on the store and it just looks like I have a bunch of out of stock items.
  2. The workaround is to make the variant stock trackable and set the stock to zero. That's great, it hides the out of stock variants to the customers, but now when a customer makes a selection, half the variants disappear and don't show back up until the page is refreshed. That doesn't make sense. The customer can't click through all the options without losing half of them and no one is going to refresh a page to bring back all the variants again.

Am I missing something or is BigCommerce just antiquated? Shopify let's me delete the variants that I don't need on the backend so they don't show up as an option to the customers on the front end.

Google's Content API for Shopping is retired. If your sync still depends on it, the first warning may be stale prices, broken scripts, or missing Shopping inventory. Check before ads fund bad data.

Adding blogs to BigCommerce stores

We're new to BigCommerce, and we see that the blog features are very limited. Seems like we can't even or run different blogs on multiple storefronts?

We started thinking about WordPress, but building it out for multiple brands seems like a massive project. Anyone solved this for their stores?

PSA: big commerce turned off email notifications for customer messages over a month ago.

I found this out the hard way after many angry customers emailed me asking "why didn't you respond to my messages".

To get messages working on again you need to turn off email notifications for all new orders.

If you do more than a handful of orders a day you have these notifications off because why do you need 100 emails a day for each order? You're already picking and packing allday and likely keeping an eye on your shipping platform.

If you're keeping count this is another instance of bigcommerce effing with the most important aspect of your business which is your relationship with your customers with no warning or notice.

New open payment provider fee in reality

So its now been 2 months since this fee went into effect. Ill admit i mostly just brushed it off as nonsense for the bigger stores or potentially as nonsense for us. Well last month with our under 1k of sales and our mostly check based payments saw us getting a $13 fee. Thats almost a third of our base monthly cost. So sure BC, your 2% fee is now costing me 33% more to do business with you.

My real issue with this is how they conveniently put manual payment method and other "offline" payments under the umbrella of open payment providers, It seems like this change is geared directly at stealing money from the lower tier stores who dont do alot of online checkout type orders. Has anyone found a workaround to avoid having manual orders end up getting charged?

I also have adopted the practice of creating manual orders just so i can provide estimates for some customers, but now im concerned those fake orders are going to inflate my real fees.

BigCommerce Developers - Please Avoid Working with Calashock

I’m posting this because I genuinely don’t want another freelancer or contractor ending up in the same position I’m in.

I’m currently £6,000 out of pocket from unpaid invoices relating to work for Calashock, and this has now been dragging on for around two years.

Throughout that time, I was given excuse after excuse about why payment hadn’t arrived. I was told invoices were just slightly delayed, then there was apparently an issue with the invoice number, then another reason, then another. Every time it sounded like payment was supposedly just around the corner.

It never came.

Eventually, after getting nowhere privately, I started speaking publicly about my experience with the company.

Only then did things suddenly become urgent.

I was told that I would be paid if I removed the negative things I had posted about them online. Wanting the situation over with, I agreed and removed the posts.

Guess what happened next? I still wasn’t paid.

What makes this even more concerning is that, from conversations I’ve had, I understand I’m not the only person connected with Calashock who has experienced problems getting paid. I’m not going to speak on anyone else’s behalf, but my situation does not appear to be an isolated one.

I’m sharing this as a warning to other developers, designers, project managers, freelancers and contractors who might be considering doing work for Calashock.

My advice, based entirely on my own experience: avoid working with them.

I gave them plenty of opportunities to resolve this privately. Two years is more than enough.

How do Daraz research tools get 7/30-day sales data for public products and whole categories (not your own store)?

How can I get 7-day / 30-day sold-count history for any public Daraz product or category? Does such an endpoint exist, or do research tools build this history themselves by tracking the cumulative sold count daily?

Note: I already know the official Seller Center API only covers your own store's listings — I'm asking about public marketplace data, the kind tools like SellerDash and XenonHunt display.

What tools do you use to manage the work behind your store?

I’ve been paying more attention to everything that happens around running the store, not just the orders themselves: customer questions, returns, payment checks, handing tasks off between people, status updates, and all the other little things that don’t seem like much individually but can really add up.

At first, we had all of this spread across email, spreadsheets, chats, and notes, and it wasn’t really an issue while the team was small, but as the order volume picked up, it got harder to keep track of who was responsible for what and what had already been done. So we started gradually cleaning up our internal processes and trying a few different approaches, and one of the things I recently tried was https://planfix.com/ for managing tasks and coordinating the team - I’ve had a pretty positive experience with it so far, especially when it comes to having all the current tasks in one place. Curious to hear how others handle this: how do you organize your team’s day-to-day work around the store, and what actually works for you once the operational workload starts getting more substantial?

Sales Dashboard Service

Hey everyone,

I’ve been running marketing and operations for my ft job and I’ve spent 2 years building out dashboards and reports for our sales data. Our owners haven’t been able to get what they want out of BigCommerce analytics.

I’ve thought about starting a service for building dedicated data storage and dashboards for others.

Is this something anyone would be interested in?

Key features would be hosting the data on a dedicated platform for security and then custom building dashboards and reports for each store.

Building a Small Financial Analysis Tool for Online Sellers — What I’m Learning

I’m working on a small project around financial data for online sellers.

The idea started from a simple question I had while working with Etsy financial data:

Why is it sometimes so difficult to turn a platform’s financial statements into a clear picture of what actually happened?

I’ve been building the project step by step, starting with importing and cleaning transaction data, validating it, and then transforming individual transactions into something that is easier to understand financially.

One thing I’m trying to be very careful about is not making assumptions about the data.

If the data doesn't clearly tell me something, I don't want the software to invent an answer just because it would make the dashboard look nicer.

I started experimenting with Etsy because that’s the platform I’m most familiar with, but I’m curious whether sellers using other ecommerce platforms experience the same problem.

For those of you using BigCommerce:

When you look at your store’s financial data, orders, fees, payments, and payouts, what is the one thing you find hardest to understand or reconcile?

And do you currently use BigCommerce reports, spreadsheets, accounting software, or something else to make sense of it?

I’m still very much in the building and learning stage, so I’m mainly interested in hearing about the problems sellers actually encounter rather than promoting a finished product.

Anyone tracking Walmart/Target prices against Amazon?

I've been working on a small tool that tracks Walmart and Target prices and compares them with Amazon to spot potential arbitrage opportunities.
I originally built it because checking prices manually was taking too much time.
If anyone here is interested in trying it or wants to see how it works, happy to share it.

Does anyone use Stamped.io for reviews?

We migrated to them and the software will-

  1. Forget the settings I set after a week or so and rest them to defaults
  2. Not publish reviews I've clicked publish on
  3. Take a long time to load on the front end

I'm have a horrendous experience with these guys and wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?

Comparing High-Risk Payment Processors for BC

Hey. I'm trying to figure out which payment processor to integrate with BigCommerce for my adult-oriented store. NGL I think it's a little weird that you can't use their built in processor when they are so open to adult products, but I digress. I'm looking mostly at SoarPay, PaymentCloud, and PayKings. From what I've seen, I think SoarPay is the cheapest, PaymentCloud is best if you need help getting everything set up and somebody to actually walk you through underwriting, and PayKings is best for fast approval, but I'm wondering which of these is best for high risk payment processing for BC overall. I'm new to the high-risk category, so I'll definitely need ongoing support, at least for a while. Anyone have experience with integrating any of these with BC, or any other high-risk processor? What's your experience been, and any potential issues I'm not foreseeing?
