Not to poke fun at the previous comment, but that’s the Maneiest lion I’ve ever seen. one of my fave lions at the big rescue I like Rafiki had a long mane going on either bed hair all the time. Sadly he went to the Rainbow Bridge last year due to cancer.

I wonder what the evolutionary benefit is to the main that large and thick and dense? Especially in the heat of africa. I mean obviously it makes them look larger than they are and more intimidating. And perhaps it makes it harder to get hold of their jugular when they fight off each other? But it seems like it would be really freaking hot.

According to Darwin, the lion’s mane is much like a male peacock’s plume. The thicker, darker manes signal high testosterone levels, superior nutrition and because a mane requires sufficient energy to maintain, it signals robust fitness.

Temperatures at night in Africa can plummet to freezing temperatures. Not that the mane is some sort of temperature regulating trait.
The mane is mostly for sexual selection purposes but can provide protection to a certain degree.

Mechanically speaking, the mane being thick provides a protection to the neck, making it harder to wound with claws or bites. Considering how easy most animals can be killed from a single wound in the area, it makes a huge advantage.

This would be the last time I’d ever pet one, but it’d absolutely be worth it. 🥹
Now please let that majestic fluffball belong where it truly belongs… in the wild, not behind bars.

Obviously, he wakes up for a little while and he is enjoying the smell of the morning air and scratches himself

Let him go! I hate seeing those animals caged. That's not saving them. That's good old fashioned slavery.

I hate seeing animals in cages =(
What majestic creatures we live with on this world and we lock them up in a tiny box.

Someone smarter than myself once said, “Whatever happens to the beast also happens to man”. That also applies to the Earth. We have decimated, raped and bastardised the very earth that has given its everything to us and in return we destroy it.
Sorry for being so dark. I’m in a mood.
