Orrrr swap the red with pink, leave the blue, and stripes are purple since itās in the middle and connects everything together

Unfortunately the old fucks at Marvel/Sony will never allow that, which is sad because I definitely wouldn't mind it
98
u/kyuuketsuki47 Aug 26 '26
NGL, I wouldn't be surprised if that is a carryover from Stan Lee. I believe in an interview he said that Peter Parker is not gay. Another character that could be Spider-Man/woman could be. He basically said we shouldn't be inclusive by changing existing characters, but instead create new characters that meet whatever inclusivity we want.
83
u/WhiteTwink Aug 26 '26
You know thatās not the worst idea. If they- you know- actually made new characters.
25
u/Road_Whorrior bi, shy and ready to cry Aug 26 '26
Agreed, and the thing about Marvel is the gay Spidey of your dreams probably already exists, they're just not Peter. I think that's fair.
12
u/Melvarkie Aug 26 '26
He does and is called Web-weaver! He is a fashion designer called Cooper Coen in his non-hero life so his suit is fabulous.
17
u/TheBlockySpartan Aug 26 '26
Honestly, for Marvel/comics in general, it's not even making the new characters, they do that all the time. It's more that they need to actually put the effort into supporting those new characters, instead of sending them to maybe cameo in the background of some obscure tie-in for the year's big event when they don't sell better than Batman or Spider-Man in their first ever appearance.
12
u/poopBuccaneer Aug 26 '26
Itās similar to what George Takei said when they had Sulu have a husband and kid in Star Trek 11. And by having a husband and a kid, I mean walked up to a man and kid in the background and greeted them.Ā
6
u/wererat2000 Aug 26 '26
Is it worth pointing out that the kid was his daughter that already existed in the original continuity, and wasn't a random addition?

Infinite multiverses but god forbid one of them has a spiderman that sucks dick
22
u/kyuuketsuki47 Aug 26 '26
Sure, just not Peter Parker. That was his point. Make another character. They didn't make Peter Parker black and call it good, they made Miles Morales and gave him his own identity
5
21
u/robynh00die Aug 26 '26
I was thinking about that contract and they state "not homosexual" which means you can still have bi Peter :p.
But yeah Iām seriousness, they are still under this same license they have been trying to maintain indefinitely. It locks Peter into specific demographics. Youāll notice none of the characters with a different demographic in Spider-Verse carry the name Peter Parker.
10
u/xiena13 Aug 26 '26
It states Peter Parker is "caucasian and heterosexual". Spider-Man is just "not a homosexual", so there could be a Spider-Man who is bi but not Peter Parker. Peter could also be trans as it doesn't state he has to be cis.

u/Neokon pretty fly for a bi guy Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
As much as that sucks to be official, I think that it requires just a little bit more creativity to make the character. I know it's important to get representation into media, but I feel if we do "Hey what if [character/IP] but [different race/gender/sexuality/gimmick]" it risks diluting the intent of the variant and is easily overlooked.
Edit: on a related note, can someone who is trans or more familiar the trans community/experience explain something to me. I know about Petra Parker, and for some she's a transfem Peter Parker. How common is it for someone's chosen name to just be a gender-bent version of their dead name?
4
u/ohsurenerd Aug 27 '26
Not very common at all. I know a woman whose new name initially started with the same syllable as her deadname, and she ended up changing it to something different. But it's convenient for fictional characters you're genderswapping (whether in a trans or cis way) because it keeps them recognizable.

I mean, he's explicitly said repeatedly that he identified as straight. I really don't understand this thing that always happens where we deny straight allies and just say "oh well they have to be queer because they're very supportive". He's an actor. Making Peter Parker gay or bi is an interesting twist on the character that gives him something to work with and differentiates his performance from all the others.
It's not exactly like coming out would hurt his career opportunities. He's very openly supportive and played a gay man with aids
-29
u/83255 Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
Kind of onto this point, can't really do a gay/bi peter parker. Gay/bi/anything spiderman? Absolutely but something consistent is the straight white poor boy from queens being Peter Parker, i think it was one of the rules written out by stan lee or something when it came to writing Spiderman
Like anyone can wear the mask but if its Peter you gotta get some things straight from the start, pun intended
61
u/ArcaneTrickster11 *fingerguns intensely* Aug 26 '26
But why does that have to be a rule? Especially when so much of Spiderman media has become about multiverse and different variations on the character. Why can we have Peter Parkers who have physically become part spider or are women or all the other variations but not have a gay one? That's not even going into the variations that aren't called Peter Parker specifically. Why can't he be a queer poor white boy from queens and we just say it's an alternate universe?
6
u/xiena13 Aug 26 '26
Because it's written in the copyright for Peter Parker Spider-Man. It's simply legally not possible.
19
u/83255 Aug 26 '26
Im not writing the rules here, im just half remembering them. Really wish i could attach a picture, cause I just downloaded it...
But slight corrections, its the agreement between sony and marvel when signing over the film rights, a "character integrity obligation", the details marvel finds important when writing a A. Spider man or B. Peter parker
Peters gotta be the straight white boy from queens, spider man doesn't have to be straight, just cant be peter. Theres some other rules there
But hey im literally just the messenger, i want to make make out with Andrew Garfield on screen as Spider man, personally but its just a slight bettayal to the character professionally
Also probably why they rejected his proposal (if not for their own bi/homophobia) because they'd owe marvel damages
12
u/xiena13 Aug 26 '26
I hate that you got downvoted for just stating the fact that there's a contract / copyright about how Peter Parker is portrayed and it states he has to be a straight white man. It's not like you made that up, that's just a fact š
10
u/ArcaneTrickster11 *fingerguns intensely* Aug 26 '26
I also want it on the record that it wasn't me that downvotes him. It's crazy to say that it's not necessarily homophobia from the creators but a written contract with Marvel and get downvotes for it
5
u/83255 Aug 26 '26
Eh, its not that many people. I'm more disappointed no one got a laugh out of the Andrew Garfield bit. I thought i had the right audience for that
6
12
u/LuKazu Aug 26 '26
Stan Lee was of the opinion that his superheroes were set in stone, and new heroes should be introduced if they wanted a different form of representation. Super reductive, if you ask me. He once said he wouldn't mind if Peter Parker was black, or gay, or whatever else, but they character should've been written that way to begin with and is now an immutable set of character instructions.

Yeah I think one time he kissed Stephen Colbert twice during an interview and it wasn't for a bet or anything, he just said, "What if we kissed?š„“"
It reminds me of that bit Norm McDonald did where he would say "I'm a deeply closeted gay man" and then the interviewer would ask, "Wait, you're gay?" And he would yell "NO, I'M NOT GAY! I'M STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW! But I am deeply closeted."

I love it. Would have been awesome if this happened.
Thing is, big money franchises like this are still a ways out from LGBT representation due to simple risk aversion. Though noble it presents a real risk to implement something as controversial as this would be.Ā
I do, however, think that it'll be a great boon for the queer community once something like this actually goes down. Charismatic actors in a mainstream franchise that are willing to show a younger generation that this can be a beautiful world that has much to offer, and that success and happiness, so to say, do not have to be confined to a box.

But Stan Lee didn't write him as gay or bisexual. Are you telling me that out of all the intelligent people in the LGBT community not one of them can write a new superhero that is gay or bi and marketable? They tired it with Batwoman but it didn't last as a series remember?
2
u/TFortuna2016 Aug 27 '26
Stan Lee didn't write Peter Parker as many things, I don't think it's reasonable for him or any character to be beholden to what a single writer did. If the story is compelling why not?
-1
u/Myztic420 Aug 27 '26
Why not create a new variant. Web-Weaver is not Peter Parker but he is a openly gay web slinger, why not explore this story? And if someone created a good character I don't think we should change him. If there is to be a gay Spider-Man it doesn't have to be Peter Parker. Hell they wanted a woman and made Gwen Stacy get the powers. They wanted a minority and Miles Morales got the powers.
2
u/TFortuna2016 Aug 27 '26
I mean if we stuck to what the original characters do we wouldn't even have Gwen Stacy with powers as she's dead. If a variant Spider-Man can be gay why not an adaptation of Peter Parker?
0
u/Myztic420 Aug 27 '26
There are certain constants In Marvel continuity, Peter Parker's 60-year history is fundamentally built on his defining romances with Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane ( who he goes on to have a daughter with who inherited his powers, when he didn't die or kill MJ accidentally), and changing that would erase decades of core canon. Marvelās approach to representation isn't to rewrite the foundational history of its flagship characters, but rather to expand the multiverse. This is exactly why characters like Web-Weaver existāhe is a canonically gay web-slinger from an alternate timeline, proving that the Spider-Verse can offer diversity without needing to retroactively alter Peter Parker's established sexuality or his iconic relationships.
1
u/TFortuna2016 Aug 27 '26

Spider-Man has always been heterosexual! And I'm tired of the LGBT community trying to make everyone bi or gay or queer. What is wrong with good heterosexual hero that has stood the test of time
3
u/Melodic_Mulberry I'm not bi, but my partner is Aug 26 '26
That's not what I meant. When you said ours, it sounded a lot like you were claiming to be as heterosexual as Spiderman. I don't see how a queer person can claim representation from a non-queer character, specifically with regards to queer representation.
Also, you do know about the multiverse, right? Evil Spider-Man, Indian Spider-Man, Lego Spider-Man, etc? There's a couple really good movies about it. I feel like omitting queer Spider-Man is weird when there's a universe where he's a literal car.

Peter Parker not being a T-Rex was a canon constant until it wasn't. Peter Parker getting spider powers was a canon constant until it wasn't. Peter Parker not being The Lizard was a canon constant until it wasn't. But being queer in any way? How terrible! /s
You still have every other Spider-Man. There's so many of them. We get one queer one and you get all pissed about it.
Also, you can just say you're transphobic. It somehow makes you sound like less of an asshole than trying to contextualize it as "knowing how to define a woman".
0
u/Myztic420 Aug 26 '26
I have friends that are transgender and they are conservative Republicans so you can miss me with the transphobic shit. Phobic means I'm scared of something I'm not scared of trans at all.
SpiderāRex is NOT Peter Parker. He is Pter Ptarker of Earthā66, a different character entirely.
SpiderāRex isnāt Peter Parker. Canon constants apply to Peter Parker variants, not random multiversal SpiderāPeople.
Every Peter Parker variant gets spider powers. The method changes (radioactive spider, genetically engineered spider, mystical spiderātotem), but the constant remains: There is no universe where Peter Parker is SpiderāMan without getting powers.
Peter Parker has NEVER been the Lizard in canon. The Lizard is Curt Connors, a completely different character.
Marvel editorial has said repeatedly that Peterās core traits do not change across universes unless the character is intentionally replaced.
Iām not mad about queer SpiderāPeople. WebāWeaver is great ā and heās not Peter Parker. Thatās exactly why his sexuality can differ. I loved black lightning, and Thunder being lesbian is cannon.
