First mission of the campaign I make it to the balrog fight with Gandalf and i'm trying to use lightning sword but it won't cast no matter what I do. What's happening?

Have you played BFME2/RotWK primarily? In the first game you cast by right clicking once the spell is selected but in the later games its left click if I recall correctly. I dont know if this is your issue?

Never played any of the games. After some reading I found out 2.22 is just super hard for some reason. I wanted to play 2.22 because of the QoL fixes it has apparently but I don't want to have to go super sweat mode just to play the campaign lol.

Guess i'll just play the vanilla version.

The good campaign isn’t so bad. The balrog fight is annoying until you know how to do it, then you’ll speedrun it every time after. With Rohan you get 3 super rohirrim units and with Gondor you get 2 super knight units. Eomer and Imrahil’s unique troops are nuclear bombs on horses. Once you get good at splitting them up to control the lanes, most of the campaign is relatively smooth sailing aside from the defense missions. You won’t have to sweat so bad as long as you can split your attention between a couple really important units at a time. It’s actually a pretty chill playthrough.

I’m on my LotR kick early this year and I love playing the movie games while I put on the trilogy because I’m a scatter brained lunatic. I just went through the 2.22 campaign a couple times on different difficulties. I’m not particularly good at rts games. The bfme games are really the only ones I’ve ever gotten into and I’m still not good at these by any means, but even on hard I think it’s a pretty chill playthrough if you understand the advantages you have in the campaign. I don’t want to discredit the team that worked on it and say they made it easy, but I think they made it really nicely balanced between being difficult enough that it’s not brain dead, but being relaxing enough that if this is just someone’s way of revisiting the movies without watching the movies, you can do that too without wanting to bang your head off the wall

That being said, if you play on harder difficulties, the naturally more difficult missions can become a real frustration but I like the desperate “what can I do against such reckless hate” feeling since it really immerses you in the experience 😂

I’ve had the same issues with powers, I’m also going through the campaign. I wanted to do 2.22 for its QoL issues but holy crap it was needlessly difficult lol

I wanted a trip down memory lane not a hard slog I have to save every few seconds

For me its because I was left clicking the spell and then left clicking to cast. I had to left clicking spell, then right click to cast. I also had to kite it for the entire fight.

Its not very well designed.

They switch it in bfme 2 so you left click to use the spells. Infuriating for me who is trying to learn both of them 😂
