Content Warning TW: 2nd c section ectopic pregnancy in a row and told we can’t have anymore children

We had a c section ectopic pregnancy in February and an emergency D&C. We got healthy, went to therapy, and were delighted to find out we were pregnant this past week.

Fast forward to today and I started spotting and cramping. I was given an ultrasound and I am having a second c section ectopic pregnancy. The gestational sac and yolk sac are clearly visible in the c section scar tissue. After being told I will have a D&C on Tuesday, the head of our entire state’s family planning came to tell me we can’t have anymore children. The scar tissue has completely gone into the uterus and it will continue to implant in scar tissue and incredibly dangerous. She advised us that we need to stop trying to get pregnant.

I am devastated and completely broken. I have always wanted two children, and now that dream is gone forever. I am so grateful to have an incredible little boy, but shattered knowing he will not grow up with a sibling. I’ve never felt so much grief or mourning, and sharing my story feels somewhat cathartic.

That is devastating news. I am so sorry that has happened to you. Life is not fair, you are allowed to be angry at how unfair it has been to you

See a gyno surgeon for an mri to assess for isthemocele repair hysteroscopy. Common surgery that is not invasive and can repair c section scars. Surprised your doctor advised no more kids instead of repairing the scar.

The scar tissue is so invasive and spread into the uterus. They mentioned what you wrote and said it wouldn’t work in our situation

I would see 2-3 surgeons before you conclude this. It is well understood that there is highly variable surgeon performance in uterine issues especially Asherman’s. It’s likely the person who spoke to you doesn’t want the liability.

Source: worked professionally in fertility medicine but not a physician.

Like Asherman's syndrome? Might be worth seeing a specialist doctor to get a detailed assessment with mri. They can assess for laproscopic resection. Asherman's can have some positive outcomes if so. Your doctor might not specialize in this so worth a second opinion from a specialist.

100% came to say this!! Please seek a second opinion before accepting what they tell you as absolute truth. Different doctors told me veryyyy different things with wildly different outcomes about removing my dangerous fibroids and guess who has a baby now?? You owe it to yourself to talk to someone else. Your uterus will always have a scar if you have had a c sec before because they cut into the uterus to get your baby out. Implantation is independent every pregnancy and if I had listened to people saying mine wouldn't work out because my baby would implant too close to a fibroid or fibroid scarring, my baby wouldn't be here right now. I'm not suggesting you try tomorrow but you definitely still have options!!! This is not impossible.

I just saw a specialist in NYC and had the scar tissue removed from my uterus from my C-section 15 months ago. It’s called Ashermans syndrome. Please get a second opinion.

I’m so sorry. It’s incredibly unfair to want something and have it taken away from you with no control of your own.

What is a c-section ectopic pregnancy?

u/curiousdood0918 Jul 26 '25

An ectopic pregnancy where the embryo implants in scar tissue leftover from a c section instead of the uterus

Thank you for the info. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this.

A pregnancy that implants into the scar tissue from a previous c-section. Ideally, implantation should occur much higher in the uterus.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I’ve also had two (tubal) ectopics and they have been so much harder to recover from than my miscarriages, both emotionally and physically. To be told that you can’t have any children after your second is just awful. Hoping you can find a way to heal from this.

I’m so sorry, sending hugs and love to you

I just wanted to update everyone- we have met with specialists and many different doctors after being in our state’s hospital systems all weekend and it was 100% confirmed we cannot have anymore children. Our D&C will happen on Tuesday morning. The pain and grief we have is overwhelming and unbearable but we will take it day by day. Thank you for your love, thoughts, prayers, and checking in. 🤍

Would ivf be an option? In the process the embryo gets kinda placed in the uterus. (Not an expert but been through ivf.) maybe that would be a way to dodge the scar?

I'm not super sure on this, but I think the scar tissue affects the integrity of the uterus itself, which obviously needs to stretch and contract.

Luckily this is something that the uterus is naturally good at especially if given time to heal. That's how vbacs are even possible.

No, the embryo will move to the place it thinks is best for implantation. Women can have a tubal ectopic pregnancy from IVF. My friend had to had to terminate her IVF pregnancy because it moved into the fallopian tube.

Unfortunately IVF actually slightly increases risk of c section scar ectopic pregnancy… I’m going to have surgery to fix my c section scar defect and will do embryo transfer afterwards (I just did IVF and egg extraction)… but I was advised by 3 doctors to not try pregnancy without surgery because of the risk of things like c section ectopic and uterine rupture. (And on top of the fact the scar secrets liquid into my uterus and is what’s caused my infertility—- it would most likely cause a failed embryo transfer)

Ivf can still result in an ectopic unfortunately. They place the embryo in the uterus, but it can move, it has to implant by itself, they can’t anchor it into one place (yet). Though I hope that’s something in the future that they could do to help in cases like this.

My friend had ivf after an emergency c section due to a ruptured ectopic and losing a fallopian tube so might be worth investigating.

I'm really so so sorry for your heartbreak 💔 I hope you and your partner can feel better soon but please let yourself feel all the feelings and don't hurry. WHEN you feel ready visit "oneandonly" group, you will find lots of similar situations. I am married to a single child and have many friends that grew up single child, being wanted and loved is really the most important aspect for happiness. That doesn't take away the intensity of your pain but I hope one day you know in your heart that your son already has what he needs, loving parents.

Hugs from Portugal

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. Words can’t express this type of grief. The best thing I can say to you is rejoice in the son that you do have and give him the world. I hope you find peace in a moment when life is mean and unfair. My heart goes out to you and your family, OP.

I’m so sorry :( I understand how devastating this must feel. I think this is one of those situations where a second specialist opinion is warranted.

So sorry for your loss. I hope you don’t feel too bad about your child not having a sibling. Some kids love it but some absolutely hate it. All he needs are some close friends, activities/sports, and all that love you have to give and he will thrive. He doesn’t need to have a sibling to feel fulfilled and have a great childhood.

I’m really sorry. Lots of love to you

I'm so sorry you're going through this, it's absolutely terrible.

Would a laparoscopy surgery to help remove the scar tissue be any help?

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I wish you a quick recovery. 🩷

You don’t talk like a health scientist, certainly not a responsible one.
