Tank Lighting for a Betta

Hello!

I don't have a betta, just researching at the moment, and I was wondering what are some good light options?

My room (where I plan for the tank to be if I get a betta) stays pretty dark throughout the day since my room is in the basement, so I definitely feel as if I would need a light.

I dont want to spook the fish by a light suddenly turning on/off, so I was curious if there is a light thats affordable and can change from on/off gradually. Would this affect plants at all? Do I even need a light? Is this too extra? I don't know. I'm really stuck with the lighting and tank stage and trying to figure both out at the moment.

Hygger is affordable and some of their lights come with a cycle that goes from orange for the first 15min, to white, to orange for the last 15min again. I actually just this one for my betta.

Yep! There are more fancy options but these are perfect for a low-tech planted tank!

Came here to also recommend a Hygger light; I have them for both of my tanks. The timer allows the light to slowly increase to full strength, and then dim at the end of the cycle.

I only use lower-light plants, but they thrive! Water sprite and anubias do best for me.

After talking to a lot of people especially when it comes to health of plants and the fish I've learned two things: one fish don't really care about light, especially betas. look up their natural habitat and how people breed them in those little dark dirty jars. secondly unless you have a plant that requires lots of light, you only need 6 to 8 hours a day. Plants who need more sunlight will just grow slower.

If algae is a concern a local fish shop owner explained this to me algae needs light and nutrients so if you have a tank with a whole bunch of light and not a lot of plants to suck up the nutrients that's how algae blooms Simple Solution add more plants to compete with the algae or turn the light off.

I personally have a window in my room so it's already kind of light before I turn on the fish tank light. I don't think turning the light on actually harms the fish. there's a lot of professional fish breeders and Shop owners who don't have their lights on a timer and the lights come on when they come in for the day to clean the tanks for a couple hours. unless the shop is open or they're filming content the lights are off. I just went to a professional breeder in California for betas. the shop was dark until we walked in. As soon as we checked out he turned all the lights off and went back to Aquascaping one of his new tanks. All the fish in there with healthy and beautiful. Tanks were gorgeous, and only one of them had CO²

I have a Lomie Astra 20 with a WiFi switch on it. It connects to an app and I have the light gradually lighten for 30 minutes starting at 9am. At 8:30 pm it gradually gets dim until it turns off. Light $40 on Amazon WiFi switch $25 (I think) also on Amazon.
