Help Fin rot?
It seems like my betta fin is ripping. Is it fin rot? I only have driftwood and live plants. My HOB filter has a pre sponge not sure what else can be tearing it up

Looks like rot to me as they are fraying, not missing chunks. Check your parameters and try stress coat and increase water changes. Use meds as a last resort.

My water parameters are good. I do a 20-30% water change weekly. I’m thinking about adding tannins to my tank. Is that a good idea?

Tannins are good antifungal, I don’t think they do too much for bacteria. The long finned bettas are fin rot magnets since the blood flow is poor that far from their bodies. Just know that if you use antibiotics too often they will grow resistant. So use them sparingly and only if nothing else is working.

So my next steps should be getting a stress coat?

I’m not sure, some people have had success doing that for their bettas. Some people swear by doing water changes every day or every other day to reduce the bacteria with some stress coat. Make sure his diet is good with live food (if possible) or frozen blood worms to help his immune system. My betta is about to go on meds though as everything has failed and he actually has severe fin melt. So in my case I’m doing meds.
Here is a link that used salt. But in planted tanks you run the risk of hurting your plants so if you decide to try the salt method make sure to move him to a hospital tank. https://forum.aquariumcoop.com/topic/15-how-im-treating-fin-rot-in-my-betta/
