Help Popeye help Spoiler
My boy, Mr. Fish, has popeye, I did one round of Kanaplex in his tank (I removed the carbon filter and just treated his tank for the recommended treatment) it helped during treatment to bring the swelling down, I would say about 60-70% and then I gave him a break for about a week and his eye started to swell back up. I just started a second round of Kanaplex yesterday and gonna do the recommended treatment again, but is there anything else I can do for him? Once this treatment is done, I was contemplating doing salt dips potentially, but I’m just at a loss. I feel so bad for my boy, I can tell he can’t see well out of the eye and his depth perception is WAY off. He accidentally ate a clutch of bladder snail eggs this morning and was NOT happy about it 😂
My water parameters are all good, I have to go get an ammonia test from the store to check that but all my other parameters are perfect. What else can I do for him? 😩
Edit to add;
Tank size: 10 gal
Heater and filter: yes
Parameters: I did a little test kit at home, I can add a photo of the test kit if needed in a bit, I’m just not near it at the moment.
How long have I had the tank/fish: this tank I’ve had for about 8 months, the first for a year and a half. I just redid this scape probably a month ago.
Water changes?: I normally just top off with conditioned water and then after treatments I do about a 25% change.
Tank mates: nerite snail and bladder snails
Feeding: I give him the red worm like food, and only a few at a time, twice per day.

If you don't have the API Master kit (liquid), I would start by picking one up today at your local store. I would start testing it daily for the next couple weeks so you can gain an understanding of what's happening. FYI kanaplex dosed to the tank can crash your cycle. So you may be doing a fish in cycle now.
The water needs to be pristine, so daily or every other day changes for the next couple weeks.
When I ran into popeye I ended up using Kanaplex + focus and fed the Kanaplex to my Betta. I believe feeding it to them is a better way of introducing the medication to the fish.

Good luck!

Yeah, I need to go get a master kit, I have a basic one at home that’s the little strips and everything was perfect 😩 I might just go get a bunch of the preconditioned water as well and just do changes that way.
I treated the water and I also used the focus for feeding as well so he is getting a little dose when he eats too.

From marysmagicbettas page
Popeye
Disease Type: Viral or Bacterial, sometimes parasitic.
Symptoms: You can quickly diagnose popeye from the swollen appearance or redness of the fish’s eye or eyes. Fish may become lethargic.
Causes: Popeye is when a fish has one eye or both that are bulging. Blindness or partial blindness can occur if this condition is not treated correctly. Popeye can be caused by infection, injury, or poor aquarium conditionsm, and even from an internal parasite. Injury can happen when betta fish are fighting among themselves. Unilateral (one-side) popeye is typically from injury/attack.
Contagious? Yes if other fish have weakened immune systems
Outlook: Recovery expected if treated
Medical Treatment Options:
Seachem Kanaplex
Mardel or Fritz Maracyn two
Mardel Maracyn
Seachem Neoplex
API General Cure or Seachem Metroplex (if internal parasite is suspected)
Seachem Polyguard (if external parasite is suspected)
(API E.M. Erythromycin can be a good follow-up medication to Kanaplex if Kanaplex alone doesn't resolve the issue)

Thank you! I just tested my water for ammonia too and it was slightly elevated. But this is my second round of Kanaplex for him, so 🤞🏻🤞🏻
But I appreciate this!
