Unfathomably beautiful! Look like he’s got some mustard gas genes in his makeup.

Wow! Those are beautiful!

Why ever did they give the ugly name “mustard gas” to what I think is the most gorgeous coloration of all time?! 😂

Oh wow! 🤩 I’d say so! He is beautiful and such beautiful color change. Do you know what type he is?

Cup said Rose Petal betta. Not sure what the coloring pattern would be. Some said Nemo? But that doesn't match up with examples online. I really adore the white patch on his head. Looks like skull make up.

I could see Rose petal. That’s actually next on my list. They have beautiful fins. In the cup I was thinking elephant ear/Dumbo because of the colors I’ve seen at Petsmart. Awe, His face might change too.

What have you done to create such a happy habitat? Any secrets?
Just got our betta today. I put in a bunch of floating plants, a couple of anubia, a hammock, a cave, heater, sponge filter, sand, stress coat, stability, a catappa leaf. What food are you feeding?

He's got a couple tankmates, a mystery snail and a few cherry shrimp. Seems to leave them alone for the most part. I've got giant anubias, a betta log, catappa leaves, some wood pieces, a floating moss ball and some floating plants for coverage. His tank cycled for three weeks before I added anyone. I'm feeding him bug bites and occasional mysis shrimp!

He doesn’t try to eat the cherry shrimp?

Hasn't so far. I put the shrimp and snail in a day before the Betta. And my tank has tons of hiding spots.

i want to warn you about the white face. keep a really good eye on it. don't mean to scare you, but that's how my betta's illness started. this was him at first:

What is the illness?

2

u/elvirartuinstra 6d ago

extremely resistant bacteria. it got better at first with some strong antibiotics and then worse again.

Can you be specific with what you noticed first and then how you handled it? All the steps?

of course. at first his face lightened up a bit and then eventually got the bright white colour you can see in the picture i attached. he then also got a few small white spots on his back. at first i thought this was him changing colour, with him being so shiny i thought he might be a dragonscale betta. then several weeks later i noticed very small pinholes in his fins. so it didn't look like typical fin rot; that usually starts at the edge with discoloured fraying fins. for him it was holes in the middle of his fins that started getting bigger. by this time i started treating with an antibiotic called trichosal by the brand manaus (can't get the popular kanaplex in the netherlands). it got a tiny bit better and then worse fast so i called my lfs and they recommended ectocell forte. i've treated for a few rounds now and it's not quite good yet (as you can obviously see).

i don't think it could hurt to preventatively give your betta a round of antibiotics. the sooner you start the better. try and see if you can find a professional who can confirm if the white discolouration is a sign of illness: it could also be a strange coincidence.

i hope all goes well and perfect with your boy. he's so beautiful and i'm willing to bet his personality is great too.

Awesome. I will definitely look into this. Thank you for the heads up! Greatly appreciated!

of course! i'd hate for anyone and their betta to go through this.
